CALDWELL : Information and photographs are sought about William CALDWELL, who came from Louisa Street South Fremantle. CALDWELL, a schoolteacher, served in the 48th Battalion AIF during WWI, reaching the rank of captain by the end of the war. He then went to Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship before returning to WA. Tel: 9432 9583. mailto:andrewp@fremantle.wa.gov.au CLONTARF TRAGEDY : A memorial will be unveiled at the Serpentine Bridge on Saturday, October 14, at 10:30am to commemorate the memory of Michael BOWMAN, who lost his life in a horrific accident on December 15,1955, and to remember the other boys who suffered shock and serious injuries. The accident occurred when the CLONTARF BOYS TOWN bus and a truck collided on a narrow bridge near Serpentine. All those interested in attending are welcome. BYO barbecue (tea/coffee supplied). FAMILY REUNIONS HERBERT : A family reunion for descendants of Albert ("Snowy") Wilfred HERBERT and Elvie REID will be held at Whiteman Park (D-Area) on Saturday, September 23, from 10.30am to 4pm. BYO picnic basket, chairs, drinks, and bathers for kids to swim. "Snowy" met widow Elvie FLETCHER while working as a tree feller for a timber mill at Holyoake. They courted and married about 1936. The family moved around a bit over the years — to Narembeen, Karlgarin, Mt Barker, Northam and Carnarvon — when Snowy was an overseer for Bill Young's shearing teams and Elvie later was the team's cook on the stations and farms. An anniversary courtyard is being constructed using brick pavers to immortalise names of the school community. If you would like to have your family recorded please reply for an application form. GROUP SETTLERS : American writer is seeking a little information about the group settlement scheme in WA, particularly that relevant to her parents' foray into the scheme in 1926-27. Their names were Edward and Alice DOWDELL (nee HEBBLE). They were given a grant of land and a cow etc. to settle in an area that mother Alice always referred to as "the groups" but the family did not stay long (father having no farming experience). The location is unknown although there is a vague memory of the property perhaps being near "Serpentine Falls". Would like to hear from someone who has had a similar experience to help fill in some blanks about those early days. Also hoping to pinpoint the location of the DOWDELL grant. HICKS/MARTIN : Seeking descendants and relatives of Edna Dorothy HICKS (maiden name), daughter of William John and Nora Hicks (formerly LOCKWOOD nee HISLOP) who were married in Perth in 1904. But Nora died in Boulder/Kalgoorlie just two years later leaving baby Edna and a son, George Hislop LOCKWOOD, from her first marriage. George Hislop died in France in 1917 while serving in World War I. He was 23. At the time of his death his half-sister, Edna Dorothy HICKS was aged 13 and living in Kalgoorlie. Her aunt, Mrs Victoria Adelaide MARTIN (nee HISLOP) had written to the war department giving details about her niece. Hoping to also hear from descendants of her aunt's family.
