The Belmont Historical Society is seeking members to join the society. Meetings are held at the museum in Elizabeth Street, Cloverdale (adjacent to the Faulkner Park retirement village) on the first Tuesday of the month at 1.30pm. If you haven't visited the museum, go along on a Sunday afternoon between 2pm and 5pm to view the many exhibits and have a cup of tea. Young people will be most welcome. BROOME SAILMAKERS : The Sailmaker's Shed in Robinson Avenue, Broome, is to be restored and information is sought about the building and the men who worked there making sails for the pearling luggers and schooners from 1900 to 1940. It stood on the east side of HMAS Leeuwin, on the site of Wauhop Park, and was removed about 1960. Any information appreciated. Contact: Colin Nichol, 9494 1247. mailto:colinnichol@yahoo.com.au FAMILY REUNIONS MARSHALL/JONES : Descendants and connections of Robert and Lilliot MARSHALL (nee JONES) formerly of East Broomehill are invited to a reunion at Henry Sutton Grove, corner Leighton and Carter streets, Mandurah on Sunday, October 8, at 11am. BYO picnic lunch. Robert MARSHALL and his brother Norman came to WA from Tasmania in 1907 and took up land in East Broomehill. They later married two sisters, Lilliot and Coralla JONES, whose family farmed in the Gnowangerup area for many years. Robert and Lilliot raised 10 children whilst Norman and Coralla raised two. Descendants of the two brothers are now spread all over the State. Guest speaker Marjorie Charleston will speak on the subject, Horse Racing in WA — the Sport of Kings. PATRIOTIC GRAND PRIX : The Patriotic Grand Prix — the only motor race held on Perth roads — was held at Applecross on November 11,1940, to raise funds for charities during World War II. The Fremantle Motor Museum is compiling a history of the event and seeks photographs, news clippings and personal reminiscences about the event including the winner, H.G. Contact: Geoff Benson, 9279 9470. mailto:gbenson@iinet.net.au QUEENS PARK HISTORY : In 1907 the Canning Roads Board ceased and in place they formed the Queens Park Municipal Council (1907-1921). It was then changed to the Canning District Road Board. An exhibition is planned to mark the centenary of Queens Park and the writer is seeking photographs, letters, maps, documents and letters relating to the area (copies or loan). SCHILLER : Information is sought about great-grandmother Christina Ernestina Wilhelmina SCHILLER (nee LUBE) and her daughter Annie. Christina died about 1936-38 and Annie died sometime after 1940. SLIM'S JERRAMUNGUP VISIT : Does anyone remember the date when Slim Dusty played and sang in the Jerramungup Hall in the late 1950s or early 60s? Do you remember how the old power plant from Borden couldn't handle the extra power required by Slim's electrical instruments and apparatus? ST GEORGE'S/ROWAN : Seeking relatives of Flying Officer Perciyal John Hamilton ROWAN. He was killed in action in Holland on May 10, 1940. Before the war he attended UWA and boarded at St George's College. A memorial wing is to be built at St George's and will honour its members who died in World War II. TIP TOP MEATS : The writer is curious as to whether anyone has photographs or memorabilia about the TIP TOP MEATS in Oxford Street, Leederville when it opened in 1952-53, and the staff who worked there at that time. He was one of their original butchers and describes it as a "very happy workplace". Contact: William McCaw, 9439 3542. US SUBMARINES HQ : The book, SILENT VICTORY, by Clay BLAIR is a long and detailed account of US submarine operations during World War II. A considerable part of the fleet operated out of Fremantle. Their headquarters were in the CML building in Perth but Admiral WILKES, and subsequently CHRISTIE, set up personal quarters at a place referred to as the "Bend of the Road", a "beautiful estate bordering on a lake". Does anybody know the address or location of the site and does it still exist?
