The government-backed scheme saw them sent all over the State often working under severe conditions. At the end of their "apprenticeship" they were scattered far and wide. An annual get-together of these boys and families has been held in Adelaide for many years and a 30-year celebration will be held there in March 2006. COBBALANA RIVER : Can anyone clarify the location in the Pilbara of the Cobbalana River? It was referred to in Jennie HARDIE's book, NOR'WESTERS OF THE PILBARA BREED, as being "south of Boodarie". Robert and Lilliot had 11 children, 10 of whom survived Robert, Dorothy "May" (m.TRENHAM), Clarence, Clematis (CARPENTER), William, Frank, Arthur, Thelma (ROBERTS), Morris and Helen "Nellie" (TONKIN). Lilliot died in 1929 leaving behind her husband to care for a large and young family. Many of them later lived in the Katanning/Gnowangerup area for most of their lives. They performed in Johannesburg at the old His Majesty's, the most prestigious theatre at the time. They are vividly remembered by three octogenarians - Louis HURWITZ and Bertha KRONENBERG now living in Canada and Michael KOTZEN in Sydney. Louis writes of the opening scene, "the backdrop was a liner and down the gangway came the 40 boys and 'girls'," (about a third of the troupe played the part of girls throughout the tour). The three friends would love to hear from any of these "Forty Young Australians" who brought such joy to them as youngsters from Arcadia orphanage in Johannesburg on the day they were treated to a special performance. Edward married Emily HOLMES in Adelaide in 1884. From 1912 to 1915 his postal address was White Horse Hotel, Cossack in WA where he was involved in the pearling industry.
