GEORGE WALTER BARBER CB CMG DSO VD CROIX DE GUERRE AVEC ETOILE AND DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF MEDICAL SERVICES FOR THE AUSTRALIAN ARMY, AIRFORCE AND CIVIL AVIATION (1925-34) : The decorated World War I medical officer used to lead the RSL parade in Kalamunda every Anzac Day almost until his death in 1951, aged 83. His work as a pioneer doctor on the Goldfields (1895-1911) helped him become one of the Australian Army Medical Corp's most important officers in World War I. His biography is being written and the author would like to hear from anyone who knew Dr Barber either in the early Kalgoorlie days, during World War I or in his days at Kalamunda when he did his rounds in an ancient car wearing a dust coat, driving gloves and in summer, a topee hat. ANZAC DAY 2006 PRE- ANZAC DAY APPLECROSS SERVICE : The Applecross RSL sub-branch will be conducting an Anzac commemoration service at the City Memorial, Melville Civic Centre (adjacent to the library) on Sunday, April 23 at 11am. The year 2006 will acknowledge the 40th anniversary of Australian involvement in the Vietnam War and in particular the Battle of Long Tan. SHENTON PARK : The Shenton Park RSL sub-branch will hold its annual Anzac Day service and wreath-laying ceremony at the Shenton Park Community Centre, 240 Onslow Road, Shenton Park at 7am. The service will be preceded by a short parade. Marchers to fall-in by 6.50am at the corner of Onslow Road and King Street. The parade will be led by a mounted trooper in full dress from the 10th Light Horse Regiment which will also post a catafalque party. Members of the public are especially welcome to attend the service and to place a floral tribute if they wish. All are invited to morning tea in the main hall of the centre following the service. VICTORIA PARK : The Town of Victoria Park will commemorate Anzac Day with a Dawn Service at Memorial Gardens, Victoria Park at 6.30am. An invitation is extended to the community to attend the service, which is presented in conjunction with the East Victoria Park and Vietnam Veterans sub-branch. The service will include bagpipes, a bugler and a wreath-laying ceremony. The 4th Victoria Park Scout Group will form a guard of honour and the Victoria Park Galaxy Guides will assist. Their position in the RAAFA contingent order of the parade is similar to last year. They are the sixth association from the corner of Barrack Street on the south side of St Georges Terrace. RAEME : The year 2006 is the 40th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. Because of the significance of this event, the R&SL has changed the order of march. This year the Vietnam veteran organisations will lead the parade. RAEME veterans must be in position and ready for the 0940 hours step-off. All Vietnam veteran units/associations will form up in Barrack Street south. The After March Reunion will once again be held at the Ibis Hotel, Murray Street, Perth from 1130 hours until 1530.
