Some stayed at Fairbridge Farm in Pinjarra and others were accommodated in the Cloisters in Perth. Perhaps there were other places as well? A history of the Dutch in WA from 1616 to the present day is being written and the author looks forward to talking to you about your memories and/or viewing any memorabilia relating to these Dutch children. HISTORY IN THE CITY : "SAGE AND ONIONS — A REMINISCENCE OF PROFESSOR WALTER MURDOCH BY HIS GRANDDAUGHTER", will be presented by Elizabeth Millett, guest speaker at the next History in the City meeting on Wednesday at 2pm. Where? Cityplace conference room, Perth station concourse. The meetings are organised by the Women's Auxiliary of the Royal WA Historical Society. Cost: $5 a person includes afternoon tea. HEROISM AWARD : James SEXTON, aged 15, was presented with a heroism medal about 1905 for donating skin and flesh during several operations on his brother, who was badly burned in a train accident on the Kurrawang woodline. The decorative gold medal is 27mm x 35mm and features the initials J.S. in a shield on the front. It is inscribed, "Presented to J. SEXTON for Heroism by Mr FARQUE". The medal was not issued by the Royal Humane Society. Does anyone know who issued the medal, the date, and who Mr FARQUE was? Contact: Phil Bianchi, 9276 7861 (a/h). mailto:pebianchi@4u.com.au MARITIME PAINTING : Seeking the whereabouts of a painting of the ship ARABELLA reproduced in the book, TRINDER'S PIONEERS, BY MALCOLM UREN (November 1940). The caption read, "The Arabella under short sail and fully laden riding a stormy sea on her maiden voyage" (painted by X. TONSAL 1933). The Arabella played a major role in the development of WA in the 1890s. The original painting was in the possession of Mr G. F. PAYNE of Fremantle. McGLINN : The writer's great-grandfather, Thomas McGLINN arrived in WA in 1853. He married Catherine WALKER and settled in York. The family tree has been compiled with over 1600 names entered, but there are still gaps in some of the lines and family history yet to be filled in. Hoping to hear from a descendant or relative with an interest in family history who would be happy to share information. Anyone with the surname McGLINN in their family could be unaware they are possibly related and they too are asked to respond. The goal is to compile a manual suitable for use by health walkers (sic), history buffs and genealogists. Descendants of people who settled land stretching down into Orange Valley from Lesmurdie and Falls Roads (Lesmurdie) and Canning, Cotherstone, and Alpine Roads in Kalamunda are invited to contribute information (300 words maximum). Include full names of ancestors, dates, how they arrived in WA (ship, camel, bullock wagon, etc.), the reason they settled in Orange Valley and to what use they put the land. Descendants of these past residents are also sought: CHINESE WORKERS brought from Singapore to WA by the colonial government; Colonel Edward HAYNES (born Ireland); Alexander FORREST; Edward MOSS, 1920s (retired Moora grazier); Archibald Francis Gustagus BURT, and dairy farmer, MANNING of Manning (Lesmurdie) Falls (more names to come). It details the history of WA's first five-year government high school from its beginnings in 1904 to the present. "Prominent historians and other ex-students have combined to write this fascinating story to shed light on an era of education whose legacy continues through the people it nurtured and their contribution to the shaping of the nation." The author of a previous history of Waroona is seeking photographs and other documentation from past residents to add to what he has already written. In particular, looking for descendants of a Mr RIDLEY who had a photograph of the original team from 1906. Mr RIDLEY lived near North Dandalup in the 1950s when he was about 60. ARMED SERVICES CPL MORGAN BEST : Hoping to hear from any returned servicemen who served in the 2/28th Battalion between July 23,1940 and July 23, 1942 and who remember Cpl Morgan Ernest BEST, the writer's grandfather. DENMARK PROJECT / ANDREWS : Seeking descendants of Josiah James ANDREWS who died at Coogee in 1961, his brother Stephen Henry or sister Lily Mary. They are the children of Eliza ANDREWS who was living in Denmark at the end of World War 1. Eliza is buried in the Old Albany Cemetery. Josiah, Stephen and Lily had an uncle, William Herbert WISE, who was killed in France in World War I. Descendants may have his photo.
