Admission free, visitors or membership inquiries welcome. Contact: Roger Pipe, 9310 1651. ONE O'CLOCK GUNS : One o'clock time gun cannons were introduced at both Perth and Fremantle in the early 1900s. They initially fired a charge of blasting powder to indicate the time. In the 1910s the guns were superseded by a so-called Detonating Time Signal — an electrically detonated charge of gun-cotton, the use of which had been introduced to WA when a so-called fog signal was introduced on Rottnest by the then-Fremantle Harbour Trust in 1906. The Fremantle time "gun" was discontinued in 1937, similarly the Rottnest fog signal apparatus was taken out of service in 1949. The Perth one o'clock time signal had always been at the Observatory and was discontinued in 1955. Question: in its latter days was the charge fired at Perth at one o'clock still gun-cotton or had it been replaced by gelignite?
