Later in July 1942, the same sad event was repeated to the 2/28th Infantry Battalion at El Alamein. While the resultant status of the POW of the 2/28th, handed over to Italian captivity is clear, that of the men of the 2/llth is "murky". Many of their members, later evacuated from Crete by Allied Intelligence operations, were never classified as POW, being simply re-classified by CARO as "Returned to Unit" from "Missing believed POW", although many had actually escaped from German captivity to reach evacuation parties. The writer is investigating these inconsistencies. Can anybody help? Contact: Bill Rudd, Post Office Box 17, South Yarra, Vic 3141.
