    3. Dear Listers , I am looking for help in following on from RGG’s early life in the penal settlements of Western Australia. All I have to date is :- Richard George GOLDSMITH, son of Edward GOLDSMITH (1784-1848) and Mary JARMAN (1796-1886), was born in 1832 in Ramsgate, Kent, England. He was christened on 1 April 1832 in the Church of St George the Martyr, Church Hill, Ramsgate, Kent, England. In the 1841 census Richard lives with his parents, Edward and Mary together with six of his siblings at Little Addington, in Ramsgate On the 24th Dec 1844 Richard is noted before the Sandwich Borough Assize Court in Kent, UK charged with larceny and is sentenced to 3 months imprisonment with a whipping before he is released. He had in fact stolen a candlestick value then at 2shillings. On 30th March 1848 Richard was convicted again at the Sandwich Borough Assize Court to 7 years transportation for felony, having been tried originally for larceny. In the Australian Criminal records Richard is noted as being transported from Parkhurst Prison, Isle of Wight to Western Australia on the "Minden" arriving in 1848. On the voyage his conduct is described as "indifferent at first then good". He is described as being 5ft 4½", with light brown hair, blue eyes, oval face shape, fair complexion, of slender build, in good health with no distinguishing marks. On the20th January 1854 Richard was released from "penal servitude" having completed his sentence. I am hoping that someone can help further my research or at least point me in the right direction Many thanks Roger M EVANS Bridgnorth UK

    3. Hi Roger I only thing that I found for Richard that is different to what you have is he arrived 1851 not 1848 he was tried in 1848. I cannot find a death or marriage here in Australia. On one site it said that he is AKA Golddsmith , and he was a Shoemaker. It might be worthwhile sending a email to the State Records Office of Western Australia for information. State Records Office Alexander Library Building James Street West Entrance Perth Cultural Centre Perth WA 6000 Email: <mailto:sro@sro.wa.gov.au> sro@sro.wa.gov.au There are 3 family on Ancestry researching Richard but they only have his birth date they do have his Parents and brothers and sisters Richard Goldsmith in the Web: Australia, Convict Records Index, 1787-1867 Name: Richard Goldsmith Conviction Place: Kent. Town Port and Boro of Sandwich Quarter Sessions Departure Date: 16 Jul 1851 Arrival date: 14 Oct 1851 Arrival Place: Western Australia Arrival Ship: Minden Hope this helps Josephine Qld Aust. https://convictrecords.com.au/... --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus

    3. Hi Roger, Is it possible that he may have returned to England after he was released from prison? Or perhaps gone to another country? You could try the Western Australian Genealogical Society (WAGS). If he stayed in WA, they'll be able to help. The Western Australian Genealogical Society Inc. (WAGS) 6/48 May Street, Bayswater, Western Australia 6053 (Postal address as above) Phone: (08) 9271 4311 - International + 618 9271 4311 Website: wags.org.au Good luck! 3. Dear Marita, Thank you for the reply, we did think that might be a possibility but having trawled through all the immigration/emigration/shipping records and census returns with no success came to the conclusion that he must have remained in Australia. I will try the "wags" site as you suggest Regards Roger
