    1. [AUS-WA] Richard George Goldsmith 1848 onwards
    2. Roger Evans
    3. Dear Listers , I am looking for help in following on from RGG’s early life in the penal settlements of Western Australia. All I have to date is :- Richard George GOLDSMITH, son of Edward GOLDSMITH (1784-1848) and Mary JARMAN (1796-1886), was born in 1832 in Ramsgate, Kent, England. He was christened on 1 April 1832 in the Church of St George the Martyr, Church Hill, Ramsgate, Kent, England. In the 1841 census Richard lives with his parents, Edward and Mary together with six of his siblings at Little Addington, in Ramsgate On the 24th Dec 1844 Richard is noted before the Sandwich Borough Assize Court in Kent, UK charged with larceny and is sentenced to 3 months imprisonment with a whipping before he is released. He had in fact stolen a candlestick value then at 2shillings. On 30th March 1848 Richard was convicted again at the Sandwich Borough Assize Court to 7 years transportation for felony, having been tried originally for larceny. In the Australian Criminal records Richard is noted as being transported from Parkhurst Prison, Isle of Wight to Western Australia on the "Minden" arriving in 1848. On the voyage his conduct is described as "indifferent at first then good". He is described as being 5ft 4½", with light brown hair, blue eyes, oval face shape, fair complexion, of slender build, in good health with no distinguishing marks. On the20th January 1854 Richard was released from "penal servitude" having completed his sentence. I am hoping that someone can help further my research or at least point me in the right direction Many thanks Roger M EVANS Bridgnorth UK

He was born in Queensland in 1901 and married Lillian Florence Dewsbury in 1922 in Brisbane. They had one child, Daphne, and divorced in Brisbane in 1931 (Trove article). Then he went to Western Australia and married Ida May Yeatman in 1932 in Perth. Ida was involved in Roderick’s divorce in Brisbane. I have found on Trove that Roderick was the licensee of the Bencubbin Hotel, 275 km north-east of Perth from about 1933 to 1937. He enlisted in the army in WW 2 but his service record has not been released as yet so I don’t know if he went overseas. Then Roderick and Ida divorced in 1946 in Perth (Trove article) and he married Eileen Flora (Ronnie) Dullard in 1947 in Perth. Eileen was married to Cecil Isbister at the time of the divorce. Roderick died in 1971 in Perth (Fremantle?) and was cremated at Karrakatta Cemetery. His second wife, Ida died in 1997. I would like to know when and where Roderick’s third wife, Eileen, died. She was on the roll in 1977 in electorate of Canning but I cannot see her in 1980 (end of roll on Ancestry). Roderick is on the electoral roll in Qld in 1954 in the Kennedy electorate (and other places) and I would like to know his address at that time. Thank you. 2. Hi List, This is slightly off topic but wondered if there anyone who has a couple of spare minutes to index for the Ryerson Index. It is such a worthy free site for the genealogist looking for the deaths of relatives. I usually index the death and funeral notices in the Wed. edition of the West Australian but am looking for someone to do it for me. If there is anyone can you reply off list and I will give you the details how to contact the person in charge. Cheers Margaret Boots.

    3. Here's a little gem from TROVE - Struck by Rail Car Bunbury, June 6. Jack Stapleton, of Forrest avenue, Bunbury, had a remarkable escape about 2 p.m. on Saturday when a motor truck which he was driving was struck by a Bunbury-bound Diesel electric car at the King road level crossing, South Bunbury. It is said that Stapleton had fitted a new carburetter to the vehicle and was trying it out when the truck stalled on the railway line. Stapleton was accompanied by his eight-year-old son and both were thrown out, but escaped with minor cuts and abrasions. Kalgoolie Miner, Tuesday 7 June, 1938 And came across this via Google. STAPLETON (Leslie): 1928 - 2015 Dearly loved Husband of Laurie. Much loved Dad of Maxine and Barry, Robyn and Brian, David and Trina. Cherished Grandad of 8 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren. Just as you were you will always be, a beautiful part of our memory. Sincere thanks to Silver Chain for their care of Les. Published in The West Australian on Jan. 23, 2015 Recent enough to possibly locate some of Jack's family.
