Hi to my fellow Sandgropers, I believe my Grt Grt Grandmother died onboard the ship Palestine which left Plymouth, England in November 1852 and arrived in WA Apr 1853. Could someone tell me where her death would have been recorded and would a death certificate have been issued? Her name was Jane BEECROFT. Regards Sue.
Dear Marilyn and Dave, No worries, i just hope it helps you, But if you think he might have been a convict, you could be in luck, our Convict records are very well documented, if you do a Google search with something like Australian convicts records/ arrivals etc. you will get heaps of sites. These are 2 very good ones for what you are looking for, www.rootsweb.com/`austashs/convicts/tas_con. htm that has the ship you mentioned on it. this one is our Capital City Canberra, also very good, www.n/a.gov.au/collect/genealogy/mfmopen/genealtas.htm Best of Luck. Hi Marilyn, I have 2 John Cash in SA, neither of them are the right ages for your man, both died in early 1900 one aged 27 one aged in 40's. sorry not much help. Chees Rhonda
Dear Marilyn and Dave, I live in Australia, and can tell you, you will not find any census records from here they are always destroyed by law, your idea of a will is most likely your best bet, and you can search Victoria on www.prov.vic.gov.au/archivesvictoria or Email them at archivesvictoria@dvc.vic.gov.au and for New South Wales you can search on http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyhistory/searchhistoricalrecords.htm I had a look at my CDs and found John CASH age 36, married Elizabeth Dunks age 28, in Tasmania on the 28 Oct 1844, reg. no. 1453. this will be the one you refer to, unfortunately the indexes do not give any further information. And a John CASh died, 27 Dec 1876, age 75, Tasmania, reg. no. 175. again no further information. There is one death in Geelong Victoria, John Cash, in 1888, age 55, but would be a bit young for yours. I have only got Tas. N.S.W. Vic. WA so could be he was in South Australia, or Queensland. Sorry I can not be of more help, best of luck in your research, Cheers, Linda. Dear Linda Thank you so very much for taking the time and trouble to help us with our enquiry. You are wonderful. The John Cash who married Elizabeth Dunks we think could be ours, we will certainly follow up the sites that you have so kindly recommended. We really didn't know where to start, so your help has been invaluable. What a shame the records are destroyed, it must make family history research very difficult, as these records have certainly helped in our research in the UK. At least you have ruled out the areas where John can't be found, which is a big help. Thank you once again, we really do appreciate your efforts on our behalf, you are marvellous. Hello Listers We are newcomers to the list and hope that someone may be able to advise on researching in Australia. We are trying to find JOHN CASH. He was probably born in Cheshire, England around 1800- 1810. He married MARTHA HAYES in Cheshire in 1830. The family story goes that he left Martha to go to Australia where he is said to have prospered. The date ranges are between 1830 - 1845. He was never heard of for many years but later returned to visit Martha who promptly showed him the door. Martha had remarried in 1845 assuming John had died. When John died he is said to have left Martha his estate which Martha refused to accept because he had remarried (we assume) saying that his property should be left to John's wife and children in Australia. Another family story says that Martha did look into receiving the estate. We did receive some information that there was a John Cash born in Stafford who was transported to Tasmania on the Lord Goderich. He later married an ELIZABETH DUNKS. He died a pauper in 1876 and buried in Tasmania. Whilst the dates tie in, the area of birth is in question. We don't know of any connection between the CASH family and the Stafford area, but having said that we know nothing of his origins. We think that a Will may hold a key if it mentions MARTHA CASH and children ANN and PETER CASH as we don't know any other way to identify our John Cash. Has anyone any suggestions as to how we may proceed to locate Wills (with us living in the UK) and access census's on line? As we don't know which state John went to we apologise for any duplication of this request that you may see on other lists. We would really appreciate any help or advice. Kindest regards Marilyn and Dave

ONE O'CLOCK GUNS : One o'clock time gun cannons were introduced at both Perth and Fremantle in the early 1900s. They initially fired a charge of blasting powder to indicate the time. The Fremantle time "gun" was discontinued in 1937, similarly the Rottnest fog signal apparatus was taken out of service in 1949. The Perth one o'clock time signal had always been at the Observatory and was discontinued in 1955. Later in July 1942, the same sad event was repeated to the 2/28th Infantry Battalion at El Alamein. While the resultant status of the POW of the 2/28th, handed over to Italian captivity is clear, that of the men of the 2/llth is "murky". Many of their members, later evacuated from Crete by Allied Intelligence operations, were never classified as POW, being simply re-classified by CARO as "Returned to Unit" from "Missing believed POW", although many had actually escaped from German captivity to reach evacuation parties. I'm looking for any information about the life or the family of James Arthur MILES, born 10 Mar 1900 at Guildford WA, died 3 Jul 1976 at Claremont WA. His parents were James Albert MILES and Mabel Hannah PARSONS, both of whom also died at Claremont. James, more often known as Arthur, was a journalist in the 1930's and married Thea ROWE in 1929 at Claremont, however the marriage only lasted a few years before they divorced. Thea was a stage actress from Sydney. I'd presume that he married again, and possibly to "Mary Anne Elizabeth" who died in 1967 at Canning Bridge. Any information on this MILES family would be appreciated. Thanks, Phil Young Sydney NSW

I'll give the Police Historical Society a try, in that case. I think they will be very interesting indeed. I noted that Eynon was not listed in the Wise directories for the previous two years to his listing in Piccadilly as a constable, so perhaps he was in a police barracks in that period. It will be interesting to find out a bit about him. I hadn't previously known anything between the time he left his wife and seven children in Melbourne in the 1890s and his death in 1934, so I've got quite a big gap to fill. I couldn't find anything for him, so I guess I must conclude that the Mrs K Eynon in the directory in 1916 was a common law wife. (And rightly so, he had another one in Melbourne.) You no doubt have gone through the papers thoroughly >they are in the State Library in Melbourne I think >I notice he not buried at Karrakatta which was/is the main Perth Cemetery >Helen Hi Helen, Thank you so much for that description of the Aberdeen Street precinct - just what I wanted. Whether William had wafted off to visit someone I don't know - it was rather curious, because he'd been missing all night, but the policeman who recovered the body from the water the next morning said he'd been there only a short time. But then, I don't know what he meant by a short time, either. Yes, I've looked at the WA papers, and got what I could from there - the reports of the inquest. I had another look at the Karrakatta Cemetery today myself, and was suprised to not find him in the index, as he is buried there - but it turns out he was indexed as EYNOR. I've asked them to change it, but I don't know if they will. It is very kind of you to offer to look up the electoral roll, but I wouldn't want to put you to any trouble or restrict your own research time. Please only do it if it is a quick and simple operation. Best wishes, Lenore Frost Essendon, Vic Photo Rescue?
