Herewith, another month from Diary of Augustus Bostock born in Cleveland, V.D.L. in 1833. His mother was Rachael Rafferty born 1800 in Sydney to Elizabeth Rafferty, shopkeeper and Capt.Robert Rhodes RN, Master of the Whaling Ship "Alexander". Robert travelled between V.D.L., Norfolk Island & Old Sydney Town 1799-1806. Rachael m.1816 Robert Bostock RN, Merchant, of Old Sydney Town. Sadly Rachael d.1837 shortly after the birth of JAMES Bostock. This shows that AUGUSTUS was without his mother at age 4 ...like so many others in that time of history... More next time.. Thelma in Queensland. MARCH 1862 Sat 1 - Working at Verandah. Put wire in fence running from small garden. Brought rails for fence in front of house. MARGETTS (Edward) called down. DOY (Mr.) burning stubble. HILL (Mr.) quarrying stone. Weather very warm. Sun 2 - Stayed at home all day. MARGETTS (Edw.) came down in the evening. W. very warm with hot winds. Mon 3 - Cart stone for foundation of verandah. Also cart rails for fence in front to keep sheep. MANIFOLD (Thos) works at verandah. ( Thos was owner - Gussy leased. HILL (Mr.) commenced laying foundation. W. hot/sultry. Tue 4 - JIMMY (Bostock) came from town. GREEN (Mr.) came for fruit for diggings. Went to ROSEHILL with man from diggings about fruit. Went round cattle at GRASMERE and PURNIM. Went to MATHERSONS (George) about bull. GREEN(Mr.) got APPLES & PEARS for diggings. HILL (Mr.) not at work and obliged to go to W'bool. Finish laying new pieces of joists in front verandah. MARGETTS (Edw.) called with dray on his way from ? and brought floorboards for verandah. W. hot/sultry. Wed 5 - Putting rails in fence at front to keep the sheep. Working at verandah. TOM (Bostock) & MR.PETER MANIFOLD (of PURRUMBETE) came out and stayed all night. HILL (Mr.) working at the greenhouse. W.fine. Thu 6 - TOM (Bostock) drove two MR.MANIFOLD'S into town. Finished fitting the boards into verandah. The men with fruit left for the diggings. Clearing away rubbish in front. Weather warm. Fri 7 - MR.MANIFOLD (Thos) remained in town to LAND SALE. Working at fence in front to keep sheep. The two MR.WARE'S (George & Mr.) and MR.HOOD (Robert of "Merrang") called. JIMMY (Bostock), MR.MANIFOLD (Thomas) and TRIPP (W. - Clerk of Parliament in debating club.) came. Weather very close. Sat 8 - Went into W'bool to play a match at CRICKET. Stayed in town all night. Weather very close. Sun 9 - Remained in town. Dined with PATERSON (Robert Brand) W. very close & warm. Rain at night. Mon 10 - Return home before breakfast. MR.PARKER (Samuel) called about road to IDEN'S BRIDGE. JOHN MACKERSEY & his father (JAMES MACKERSEY) called on their way to BOORTKOI. (John's sister Catherine 'Jane' Mackersey was wifeof Thomas Bostock, managing Boortkoi for Manifolds). MR.MANIFOLD came out in the evening (Peter/Thomas?). Put slate under greenhouse. Repair small fence in front. Clearing rubbish. W.changeable. Tue 11 - WILLIAM KEILLAR commenced work. MANIFOLD (Thomas) and myself commenced shingling main portion of house. MARGETTS (Edw.) called. WILLIAM COOPER called from ROSEHILL about POTATOES. Weather - windy from south west showers Wed 12 - Shingling roof of house(Grasmere). Wm.KEILLAR putting rail to verandah. MACKAY(Mr.) came with JIMMY (Bostock) Weather showery. Thu 13 - Put last of palings we had on verandah roof. KEILLAR (Wm.) finished rails and put first coat of paint. MANIFOLD (Thomas) put weatherboards on house. Went round cattle. MARGETTS (Edw.)brought spotted bullock home from TOZERS (Francis). Went about clearing off road. To DOYS (Mr.) & JENKINS (Allan) about getting more palings. Weather showery. Fri 14 - Went to DELANEYS (Mr.) about getting palings. Wm.KEILLAR painting. Shot cow for HILL (stonemason). Sent to DELANEY'S (Mr.) and brought home palings. JENKINS (Alan) called with palings. Finish shingling end of verandah. Two men called about APPLES. W.showery. Sat 15 - Went into W'bool to get some nails and to TENDER for GRUBBING & CLEARING. Finished the roof of front verandah. MR.BARKER arrived from PURRUMBETE (at CAMPERDOWN.) W. fine/cool. Sun 16 - JIMMY (Bostock) and JOHN MATSON of PURRUMBETE came out from town. (John is s/o HENRY MATSON & ALICE MANIFOLD.) MARGETTS (Edw.) called. Walk to PURNIM in afternoon. Weather - showery. Mon 17 - Put up spouting in front. Commenced repairing kitchen roof. WILLIAM (Keillar) didn't come till midday. DREW (Mr.) put garden about front in order. W.fine, sharp frost at night. Tue 18 - Shingling kitchen roof. Finish verandah. DREW (Mr.) working in garden. Put front parlour. W.fine/sunny. Wed 19 - Finished shingling roof of kitchen. To W'bool with MANIFOLD(Thomas) & BARKER (Mr.) to attend AITKINS wedding. Weather fine. (James William Manifold AITKIN was brother of Lucy Hannah, Margaret, Mary Jane & Alice AITKIN, all issue of James Aitkin & Mary Meacock 'nee Manifold' of Glen Esk, Tas.) James m.1862 widow of Jeremiah G.Ware who d.1859. James' bride was ANNIE YOUNG 'nee McRobie' WARE, who died sadly in 1867. J.W.M.Aitkin served on W'bool City Council & was first Mayor of the Municipal Council). Thu 20 - JAMES AITKIN was married and they drove out to GRASMERE. Went to a party at MRS AITKINS (Mary.Meacock nee Manifold.) in evening. W. v.warm. (Seems Gussy gave up his Grasmere for the couple) Fri 21 - Remained in W'bool all day. Spent the evening with MRS.AITKIN (Mary Meacock) Weather warm. (This was the home of Gussy's future bride Margaret Aitkin, so I guess he did not mind.) Sat 22 - Remain in W'bool. Drove out with ERNEST(Bostock) & Tom (Bostock) to see Ernest's new house (LIPOOK). Went on board Steamer "QUEEN"-saw MR.& MRS MACKERSEY off to MELBOURNE. (James Mackersey & Eliza nee Letham) on their way to England by "DOVER CASTLE". W.warm. Sun 23 -Drove Mr.MANIFOLD(Peter or Thomas) up to PURRUMBETE (Camperdown.). BARKER (Mr.) rode up with us. Weather dull but rather warm. Mon 24 - Remained at PURRUMBETE all day. MATSON (John ?) went out and shot me a couple of TURKEYS. Drove ladies down the road for a drive. W.rather warm. Tue 25 - Drove down to Warrnambool by myself. Bought some DUCKS at TERANG. Weather. very warm. Wed 26 - Returned home before breakfast. Agreed with two men to GRUBB and cut up ...? on the road according to my contract. MR.McROBIE (William) and GEORGE WARE came. Weather fine. Thu 27 - Call to STUBBS about surveying HOY'S FARM. Agreed to give DOY (Mr.) £3 per week for drawing off timber on road. Agreed with JOHN KEILLAR to ? roots and fill holes at 30/- per week. AITKIN (Jas.Wm.M.) & MRS.AITKIN (? Mary or Annie) went to W'bool. I rode with them and stayed in town all night. Went to Hall (?) in the evening. Men commenced GRUBBING. W. fine. Fri 28 - Instructed BUSH (? Robert BUSHE) to sue SNOW (Henry - Butcher) for his accounts. Dined with PATERSON (Robert Brand Paterson) (who was married to Mary Jane Aitkin - sister of other girls and James ) Returned home in afternoon. MR.McKIERNIN(W.H.) came and we went to see roadwork. Wm.KEILLAR commenced putting glass in greenhouse 'right'. W.fine. Sat 29 - At road all day. KEILLAR (Wm.) working at greenhouse. Drove to W'bool in evening. JIMMY (Bostock) and TRIPP (W.) rode out. W. fine. Sun 30 - Stayed at W'bool. Called at BATEMANS (James or Wm.) and walked out as far as ERNEST'S (Bostock) new house. Weather stormy. Mon 31 - Returned home. DREW (Mr.) went to ROSEHILL to bring Leicesters. Man from diggings got PEARS from Rosehill and came for APPLES. Went to see how men were getting on with grubbing road.
