May 17, 1918 Writing to Mr E.W. HEARD under date March 17, Private HEARD said he received some parcels, which were very acceptable, He intended visiting Billy BROWN, of the 57th, and heard that Hughie McCALLUM had been recommended for the M.M in a raiding party with Jack ANDERSON. Private HEARD had observed a German observation plane tackled by our planes and saw it burst into flames and fall. Through field glasses he watched our planes circling round it until it reached the ground. He had received a batch of papers including the " West Wimmera Mail" which he said was the only one of special interest to him. Bob McCLURE had written to him to say that he was still in England. While he was reading letters Fritz put over some big H. E's, so he promptly got behind a pill box. Daryl Crabtree Gladstone Qld www.ballaratgenealogy.org.au/goroke/
