    3. Dear Friends, Thanks for your patience. I am sorry to be so long getting back with the diary, but with the grandchildren home and back to school, I am keen to get more of the diary of Augustus Bostock posted to the list.... Augustus (1833-1920) was born at 'Vaucluse' Conara, Tasmania and died at his property 'Vaucluse' (formerly 'Gladiswood') Hopetoun Street, Warrnambool. The current years of the diary were written while he was on 'Grasmere' the property of Thomas Manifold, just north of Warrnambool. JUNE 1862. Sun 1 - Stayed home all day. MARGETTS (Edward) called. Went for a walk around paddock. W. fine except light showers. Mon 2 - Planted Willow cuttings brought down from PURRUMBETE. Put wire under two rail fence next to LATTAS (William) Went to ROSEHILL with TOM (Bostock). Bought sheep from him. FRED MARGETTS took a letter to Warrnambool for me. Saw MARGETTS (Edward) about sheep from Rosehill tomorrow. TOM (B) returned to Warrnambool. WILLIAM KEILAR repairing the old tilt cart for ERNEST (Bostock). ROSS called about renting the piece of grass next to school house. Weather fine with light showers. Tue 3 - Finish logging fences. Put logs in for a crossing in back paddock. James.McROBIE (s/o William - bro/of Annie Young McROBIE who married 1851 to J.G.WARE - secondly to J.W.M.Aitkin) came on way to LATTAS (William) for a horse.TOM (Bostock) drove out - went with him to BOORTKOI. MARGETTS (Edward) brought old sheep down from Rosehill. W. fine - light showers. Wed 4 - TOM (Bostock) and myself drove to MR.JAMIESONS (Robert) and took delivery of sheep I bought from him. Return to BOORTKOI (Hexham). W. fine. Thu 5 - Went for a ride around run. Went to Hexham in afternoon and met sheep from MR.JAMIESONS (Robert). Fri 6 - Started sheep for home. Saw them clear of MR.HOODS (Robert) and returned home. WILLIAM KEILAR mending cart for ERNEST (Bostock). DREW (Mr.) digging potatoes in small garden. McKIERNAN'S (W.H.) men carting stone out of back paddock. Weather fine. Sat 7 - Making sheep yard. KEILAR (Wm.) mending dray for ERNEST (Bostock of 'Lipook' Warrnambool). Went out to meet the sheep - Saw them as far as ARNEL'S (Frederick) paddock. MARGETTS (Edward) called. Weather fine. Sun 8 - The sheep from JAMIESON'S (Robert) got home. TRIPP (W.) came out. MARGETTS (Edward) called. W. fine. Mon 9 - Draw sheep to paddocks. MR.BATEMAN (Jas/Wm.?) called. Two HELPMANS ( ? Charles & Phillip ?) called. Topping middle deadwood fence. Ploughing out drain in back paddock. WILLIAM (Keilar) working at the cart. Cleared some logs out of the entrance road. Weather fine with a few light showers. The end of the first diary and start of the second diary (book.) Tue 10 - Put up side fence on old bridge. Quarry stone for road leading to the bridge. Put wire in fences next to LATTA'S (William). Went round cattle at PURNIM. MARGETTS (Edw) called. Settled account with him. Got two pigs down for bacon and salted them. Weather very wet. Wed 11 - Commenced putting stone on road leading to bridge. Went to W'bool - stay all night. Settled with WILSON (John) for pigs. (John had bacon factory) Saw butchers about fat stock, but could not sell any. Attended to OPENING of WILLIAM ADAMS WILL. Stayed in town all day. Went to ERNEST'S (Bostock - brother) in evening. Stayed there all night. Men carting stone on to the road. Weather - hot in the morning but fine throughout the day. Thu 12 - Stayed in town all day. Saw about ADAM'S (William) Will. Stayed all night at ERNEST'S (Bostock - 'Lipook'). W.fine. Fri 13 - Return home - saw NICOL (Gilbert) about settlement with TOM (Bostock) for ROSEHILL. LYALL (James) came to see fat wethers. WILSON (John) called about pigs. I sold him more. Got stone for the road. Repaired gates at the yards. Mustered pigs ready to send into W'bool. Weather fine. Sat 14 - Start pigs for WILSON (John). Sent dray into W'bool. Logging portion of side fence next to LATTA'S (William). Went into W'bool. Weather fine. Sun 15 - Returned home. JIMMY (Bostock) came with me. MARGETTS (Edward) called in afternoon. W. fine with sharp frost in morning. Mon 16 - JIMMY (Bostock) left for town. Got in and drafted the sheep which had joined from the back paddock. Counted the remainder. Making the road to the bridge. Went up to MARGETTS (Edward) to see about drawing ewes. Weather fine with sharp frost. Tue 17 - WILLIAM KEILAR finished cart for ERNEST (Bostock). Quarry stone for road. Went to ROSEHILL to meet KERR (Andrew) & SMITH (Mr.) to arbitrate between NICOL (Gilbert) and TOM (Bostock). Moved cattle in back paddock. Drew ewes from MARGETTS (Edw.) and got them home. Commenced putting lime on back of house. W. fine. Wed 18 - DREW (Mr.) footrotted ewes for MARGETTS (Edw.) (First time he used footrotted) and put them in middle paddock. Cart stone to road. WM.KEILAR away. W.fine. Thu 19 - Putting LIME on back of house. Quarrying stone for the road. Move cattle bought from MARGETTS (Edward) to grass paddock at PURNIM. Went round sheep and cattle on GRASMERE. W. fine morning - rain heavy - thunder a'noon. Fri 20 - Commenced drain in mash in back paddock. Put on lime. Put wetheres from far paddock to DOY'S paddock to feed of rubbish before ploughing. JAMES JELLIE called to see fat cattle. Got in pigs to send to WILSON (John). Carted stone on to road. Weather fine. Sat 21 - ARNEL (Frederick) and JOHN KEILAR work at drain in back paddock. WILLIAM (Keilar) putting on lime. Sent four pigs in dray to Warrnambool for WILSON (John). To W'bool. TOM (Bostock) came out with me in a'noon. Sun 22 - TOM (Bostock) started for home. Went with him as far as JENKINS (Allan) far paddock. Called to see ROSS (Mr.). Weather fine. Mon 23 - WILLIAM (Keilar) putting LIME. Sent JOHN (?Keilar) to Rosehill to put thrashing machine in order. ARNEL (Frederick) took up posts in back paddock and they commenced boring posts next to mash ready for wire. Went to Forest to see Peter about split stuff. ROSS and PETER call. Tried to get two pigs for WILSON (John), but could not succeed. Weather fine but sharp frost. Tue 24 - Went up to Rosehill to meet Mr.KERR (Andrew), but he did not come out. Commenced morticing posts for dividing the mash. Went into W'bool. Weather fine. Wed 25 - Stayed in W'bool. Sold SHELDRICK (Walter) 30 head of cattle - to take 40 if I have them at £5 per head - cow and bullocks. Weather - wet in afternoon. Thu 26 - Return home - put wire in fence next to flat. To Rosehill to meet MR. KERR (Andrew) & SMITH (Mr.) to value improvements. Finish putting LIME on main portion of house. Weather - light rain. Fri 27 - Put LIME on back room. Commence putting sheep fence to river. Finish putting on lime. W. mild/showery. Sat 28 - Put fence in mash. Kill white bullock for dogs. A man called about place as gardener. MARGETTS (Edw) called. Weather showery. Sun 29 - Went to ERNEST'S (Bostock). Walked into W'bool in the evening. Weather fine. Mon 30 - Stayed in W'bool. MR.MANIFOLD (Thomas) came out by "LADY BIRD" (Steamer). Walk to ERNEST'S (Bostock) in afternoon. Rode to see Mr.MUSGROVE (A.W. - Collector of Customs 1859-1877) Stayed at ERNEST'S (Bostock) all night. Weather fine.     3. Thanks Thelma Andrew KERR was an architect, responsible for several buildings around the Warrnambool area, including the Presbyterian Manse at Mortlake which was our family home for 40 years.
