Well, it was mentioned at the Pioneer Women Seminar recently that many of the baby farmers here in Melbourne were minding children whose parents/grandparents were in New Zealand, Queensland, etc, from where the young girl had been sent to have her baby, then returned home from a 'holiday' and parents sent money to the baby farmers to mind the child. (Helen Harris's talk) So it's well within the realm of possibility. And I have 2 illegits in my tree who consistently give their grandparents as their parents, so either they never knew the truth or they were adopted by the grandparents, though that would have been informally back then.
