My great great grandparents Richard and Priscilla HARVEY, arrived at Belfast from Cornwall on the Clara in 1854 and stayed in the area for the rest of their lives. Richard was from Sancreed and Priscilla from Camborne. Shipping records indicate that Richard age 23 and wife Priscilla Harvey age 22 were assisted migrants. Church of England was stated as the religion for both. Richard's occupation was stated as agricultural labourer. There was a 21 year old John Harvey and wife on the Clara too however subsequent research indicates that John and Richard were not brothers. I would be interested to know if as an assisted migrant Richard would have had a job waiting. Richard's death certificate states occupation as Quarryman. The death certificate of his son William states that father was a stone mason. Birth certificates of daughters Mary Jane and Priscilla state father's occupation as labourer. Is there some way in which I can track his workplaces? Would there be Quarry records? Were there many stonemasons in Port Fairy who could have employed him? One of their children, Grace, was librarian at the Institute library in Port Fairy for many years at end of century and early twentieth century. I'd be interested to hear of anything.
