Continuing with the diary of Augustus Bostock of 'Grasmere' in the Western District of Victoria. He is preparing, at the moment, for the stocking and building up of the property "Coomete" at Hexham. NOVEMBER 1861 Sun 1 - Stayed in town all day. Went out to ERNEST (Bostock) in the evening and left my horses there and walked in again. Weather very wet and stormy. Mon 2 - STEPHENS (Mr.) and myself started out and turned back again, as we heard the river was too high to cross. Went to ERNEST (B) in the evening and stayed all night. Weather stormy. Cleared up a little at night. Tue 3 - STEPHENS (Mr.) and myself came out and had to come by Woodford. STEPHENS (Mr.) went to BOORTKOI in the afternoon. DOY (Mr.) called about account. Water still over the flats. Took TWO SWARMS OF BEES. Weather fine. Wed 4 - DREW (T) went to WELCH'S (Mr.) for some potatoes. Carted in some wood and went round the cattle at Purnim. Skinned a bullock that died. River falling fast. Weather fine but cloudy. Thu 5 - Went to Warrnambool to attend COUNTY COURT. Stayed in town all night. STEPHENS (Mr.) came down from HEXHAM to tell me some of the shearers were coming down to shear some of the sheep and he went out to get things ready. Weather changeable. Fri 6 - Returned home before brreakfast. Sheep were too wet to commence shearing before 11 o'clock. Weather light showers. Sat 7 - Finished shearing wethers. DOY (Mr.) came and I settled with him for potatoes and oats. STEPHENS (Mr.) and myself went into Warrnambool intending to go to the concert, but heard it was not worth going to, so did not go. Weather light showers. Sun 8 - Stayed in town. Went out to ERNEST'S (Bostock) in the afternoon. Weather fine all day but cloudy at night. Mon 9 - Stayed in town all day. Agreed with AITKIN & BOSTOCK (James Wm.Manifold AITKIN - brother in law ERNEST BOSTOCK) about bill for sheep. Wrote to SANDERSON (Mr.) about my land. Stayed at ERNEST'S (B) all night. Weather dull. Tue 10 - Returned home and found that two beasts had died. MRS. SNOW went into Warrnambool. Went to PALMERS (Octavius Frederick William) DREW (T) went round the cattle and carted some wood. weather cloudy...no rain. Wed 11 - Took SWARM OF BEES. Harrowed TOBACCO ground. Sowed seed. PALMER (O.F.W.) came and stayed all night. Weather rather warm. Thu 12 - PALMER (Octavius F.Wm.) left for home. Went round cattle at Purnim and went into Warrnambool. MACKENZIE (Anthony) and PHIL HELPMAN came out with me and stayed all night. Weather fine. Fri 13 - Went as far as Warrnambool lookign for the parcel PHIL HELPMAN had lost. CONWAY (Mr.) came with me to look for it on the way home. Branded all the sheep shorn. MacKENZIE left for home (Anthony). Weather very warm. Sat 14 - DREW (T) finished sowing the rest of the tobacco. Went up to BOORTKOI on my way to MILLIARS (Mr.) to take delivery of the ewes. stayed there all night. Weather fine. Sun 15 - Stayed at BOORTKOI. Went to church at HEXHAM. Weather rather warm. Mon 16 - Went to MILLIARS (Mr.) calling at ....askie's to give notice of sheep going through. GILCHRIST (Mr.) went up to bring down sheep.W.warm. Tue 17 - Commenced drawing the ewes and branded a part of them. Weather very stormy. Wed 18 - Finished branding the ewes and started them on the way down. Returned to Boortkoi, calling at .....CLASKIE'S about the sheep he has for sale. Called at MR.WILLIS'S to see if we could get BRUSH YARD FOR THE SHEEP. Weather fine and cool. Thu 19 - JIMMY (Bostock) went to see GILCHRIST(Mr.) across Hopkins's River. Drew rams we are to get from TOM (Bostock). Stayed all night. Fri 20 - Returned home before breakfast. Brought down TOM'S (Bostock) chesnut horse. Went round the cattle at Purnim. Went down to Warrnambool in the evening. Weather fine. Sat 21 - Stayed in Warrnambool. Saw SNOW (Henry) about the balance he owes us. Weathere fine...hot wind. Sun 22 - Dined at JAMES AITKIN'S and went out to ERNEST'S (Bostock) in afternoon. Stayed all night. Weather wet. Mon 23 - KNIGHTS (Mr.) came and we pared the hoofs of some young horses. Went round the cattle at PURNIM with KNIGHTS (Mr.). Got ewes and lambs in ready to commence shearing tomorrow. ERNEST, LUCY(Bostock) and MARGARET AITKIN called on their way to BOORTKOI. W.Warm. Tue 24 - DREW (T) and myself shearing all day. MR.URQUHART (Roderick) and PATERSON (Robert Brand Paterson) came out and stayed all night. MARGETTS (Edward) called. Weather very warm. Wed 25 - Went to FOREST and got PETER HARRIS to shear sheep. MARGETTS (Edw.) drew lambs for TOM (Thomas Edward Bostock) and took lambs up to go by him. ERNEST (B) returned from BOORTKOI and stayed all night. Weather very hot. Thu 26 - Put wood that got wet ? after rain last night. Shore sheep that were in all night. ERNEST & PARTY (Lucy & Margaret) left for town and MR.BAKER left. MARGETTS (Edw.) called. Put two pigs in sty, to big paddock. WILLIAM KEILLAR working in the garden, hoeing weeds. Weather very wet in the morning but fine after. Fri 27 - PETER HARRIS and DREW (T) shearing ewes and lambs. Went into Warrnambool and stayed in town. Wen to Mr.BATEMAN'S (Wm./Jas.) Fine. Sat 28 - ERNEST (B) and myself start for HAMILTON to play CRICKET with HAMILTON CLUB. Got up late at night. Weather warm. Sun 29 - Went up to KENILWORTH (John MACKERSEY & wife Ann Harriet HEADLAM) in the afternoon and stayed all night. Weather warm. Mon 30 - Went to HAMILTON early in morning. Sun 10 - To Boortkoi (home of Thomas) from Melbourne. W. fine / cool. Mon 11 - Stayed at Boortkoi all day as JIMMY (Bostock) had taken the horses away. W. fine/cool. Tue 12 - ERNEST (Bostock) and party returned to Warrnambool, calling here on the way. Had down TOM'S (Bostock) horse and let old Peggy. Called at COOMETE to see JIMMY (Bostock). Weather fine...a cool wind. Wed 13 - STEVENS (Mr.) and DREW (T) finished putting grass together. Went to DOY'S (W) and CLANCY'S (John) about a machine to thrash grass. Went into Warrnambool and stayed all night. Weather fine but cloudy. Thu 14 - Went to KOROIT to attend the Court. Returned to Warrnambool and stayed all night. Weather very warm. Fri - 15 - Settled some money matters. Saw SHELDRICK (Walter) about cattle. Saw HARRIS (Peter) about thrashing machine. He agreed to thrash grass seed.MRS.PATERSON (Mary Jane Aitkin - wife of Robert Brand Paterson) has a daughter. Returned home after tea. STEVENS (Mr.) and DREW (T) cutting thistles. Weather stormy with some rain in forenoon - very windy in afternoon. Sat 16 - DREW (T) went round cattle and cut thistles on GRASMERE. STEVENS (Mr.) and myself went to MCWHIRTERS (Mr.& Mrs.) to see his weaners and bought them from him. Called at GOOD'S(John) to see some weaners he had for sale. Weather fine. Showers in morning - fine after. Sun 17 - Sayed at home all day. MR.MARGETTS (Edward) and MR.STUBBS (Mr.) called. Weather fine. Mon 18 - STEVENS (Mr.) and DREW (T) run sheep through ARSENIC. Went to McWHIRTERS (Mr.& Mrs.) and took delivery of weaners and started for Coomete. Called at GOOD'S (John) on the way back and bought a few weaners from him. Weather warm. Tue 19 - Went to Warrnambool to attend the Court, as it was my day. Stayed in town all day and attended the BENEVOLENT SOCIETY MEETING for election of officers. Went and had a game of CRICKET. Weather warm. Wed 20 - Returned home. Thrash RHYGRASS with STEAM MACHINE. Went to a party at MR.URQUHART'S (Roderick). W. fine all day, rain at night. Thu 21 - Punch got away. Went home - went to Warrnambool and home. EDDINGTON(Campbell ??) and MacKENZIE (Anthony) came with me to BALLANGEICH. Weather fine. Fri 22 - Went to CRAIG'S (John Hollins ?) to see sheep. Bought ewes. Returned to MR.BLACKS (Neil) and stayed all night. Weather fine. Sat 23 - Went home, calling at Ballangeich. Met TOM (Bostock) and DR.R.HARRINGTON at Grasmere on way to Boortkoi. Mon 25 - Went round cattle and sheep on Grasmere. JIMMY (Bostock) and myself went to FOSTER'S FLAT to see how tenants were getting on. Called at Purnim and went through our cattle and MARGETTS (Edward). Stayed at MARGETTS to tea. All hands cutting thistles on Purnim. ARNEL (Frederick) came about getting his accounts settled. Weather fine morning, rain in evening. Tue 26 - JIMMY (Bostock) and myself went to Coomete and stayed there all night. STEVENS (Mr) DREW (T) and KEILLAR (William) cutting thistles. Wed 27 - Went out to try ans shoot some SNIPE and QUAIL. Went up to Boortkoi. Weather cool. Thu 28 - TOM (Bostock) drove us down to Warrnambool, calling at Coomete to see the weaners. Weathere warm. Fri 29 - Played CRICKET MATCH Warrnambool against Portland. Warrnambool won with runs to spare. Attended dinner in the evening. Finished cutting thistles. Weather fine and cool. Sat 30 - Shot at PIGEON MATCH at PENFOLDS. Returned to town and went to a party at JAMES BATEMAN'S. Weather warm. Sun 31 - TOM (Bostock) drove me home on the way to Boortkoi. STEVENS (Mr.) came out. Sincerely Thelma (Bostock) Birrell DECEMBER 1863 Tue 1 - Went to BOORTKOI. All the Warrnambool cricketers started for home. Weather fine. Wed 2 - Return home. MARGETTS (Edward) called. Put in lambs to shear tomorrow. LUCY & MARGARET AITKIN made jam. WM.KEILLAR was working in the garden. Weaned the oldest lambs from their mothers. DREW (T) went to see cattle that were inoculated yesterday. GILCHRIST (Mr.) took down to Coomete the ewes we bought from TOM (T.E.Bostock). Called at ARMSTRONGS (Mr.) to see his wool. Weather fine except - light showers. Thu 3 - DREW (T) finished shearing lambs. WM.KEILLAR working in the garden. Went to Warrnambool to see about bank account. Rode out in the evening. Went into Warrnambool with them. Marked all the wool bales that went in. Stayed all night at ERNESTS. Sun 6 - Went up to Purrumbete to bring down MISS WHITING(Sarah). Stayed there all night. Weather fine. Mon 7 - Went down to BOORTKOI ,calling at MR.McARTHUR'S and Mr.CRAIGS (Mr. ?J.H.). Weather rather warm. Tue 8 - Returned home. ERNEST (Bostock) and Miss WHITING (Sarah) went on into Warrnambool. Weather very warm. Wed 9 - DREW (T) cutting thistles. Had in small lot of cull wethers from Coomete to see if they were alright. WM.KEILLAR working in the garden. Move ewes into the pig paddock, as I want to put the wethers that are coming down into their paddock. Weather fine. Thu 10 - Went into Warrnambool to the Amateur races. TOM (Bostock) and JIMMY (Bostock) came down. Weather fine. Fri 11 - Stayed in town to the BALL. DREW (T) cutting thistles. STEPHENS (Mr.) went over to see cattle and salted two hides. Went down to WOODFORD to see and get some TOBACCO SEEDS. Called at DOY'S (William) about ploughing the ground. PALMER (Octavius Fred.Wm.) and TRIPP (W.) came out. W.rather warm. Sun 20 - Stayed at home all day. STEPHENS (Mr.) went into Warrnambool. Weather very warm. Mon 21 - Went to COOMETE and JIMMY (Bostock) and myself went up to BOORTKOI to see TOM(Bostock) but he was away at HAMILTON. Tue 22 - Stayed at BOORTKOI all day. TOM (B) and John MACKERSEY came down from Hamilton. Weather rather warm. Wed 23 - MACKERSEY (John) came down with me and we went into Warrnambool. Weather fine. Thu 24 - Returned home. MACKERSEY (John) and M.AITKIN (Margaret Aitkin - his bride to be), Miss WHITING (Sarah), TRIPP (W) MacKay, and Miss MacDOWAL (?) came with us on the way to BOORTKOI. Stayed here all night. Weather very fine. CHRISTMAS EVE !!!!!! Fri 25 - (CHRISTMAS DAY) We all went on to BOORTKOI to spend CHRISTMAS. STEPHENS (Mr.) went into town. Weather very warm. The diary for this year finished here in 1863, when three brothers and John Mackersey, their brother in law, went to MELBOURNE. Augustus takes up writing the diary again on Sunday 10th January 1864.
