Hi Yvonne, I have had a quick look at the Hill/ Hook(e) families of Casterton, and my thoughts would be that your James Joseph's Father was James and his Mother was Mary Ann. Mary died in 1869, (record attached), and James remarried Jane Hook (may have been related to Mary) in 1870 and had 8 more children. This would only be a guess!Digger - Pioneer Index. Victoria 1836-1888 Query ----- Surname : hill (4156 matches) Spouse Surname/Fathe : hoo* (688 matches) Total matching records: 2 -------------------- Surname: HILL Given Names: Mary Event: D Spouse Surname/Father: Hooke Joshua Spouse Gvn Names/Mother: Harriet UNKNOWN Age: 32 Sex: Birth Place: NORF Death Place: Year: 1869 Reg Number: 3609 Denomination: Parish: Fiche: As for the names, I would think that Mary was the first wife, even if she is referred to as Mary Jane this may have been confusion between the 2 wives, the death certificate information may have been given by someone who was not totally informed. I would say that Louisa Jane was probably known as Louisa or Jane as it was not uncommon for that era to go by the second name instead of the first. You could get Jame's (the father) death certificate and if I am correct it should list both wives and all the children. Again this is only assumtion, but that is what we do first in research. I hope you find them.
