Dear Listers I am continuing to search for famiily connections to the families below. At the present time, I am working in Samoa and have no access to broadband for searching, but am continuing to do some via a slow dial up connection. It is a while since I put this family on the list and so thought that I would do so again, in case there are any new members who might have some information or benefit from what I have provided. Archibald MACMILLAN and Flora McINTYRE (from Oskamull, Mull, Scotland) came with their children to Portland Victoria Australia on the New Zealander in 1853. From that time and in some records in Scotland, the family is referred to as McMILLAN. Their son John (23) who is my great grandfather married Margaret McDONALD in Digby, Vic in 1864 (she also came on the New Zealander with her parents, but they came from Skye). Some records have John McMILLAN born in Ulva, but the Parish of Ulva does in fact take in Oskamull which was a village in Mull. The other children who came with Archibald and Flora MACMILLAN on the New Zealander were: Anne, Christy and Alexander. I have not been able to trace what happened to Alexander. It seems that there was another son Angus who came to Australia, but did not travel with them at that time. I have not located the ship on which he came, or his records in Australia. There were two other daughters who remained in Mull – Mary and Sarah (Marion) who married Neil MacLean and lived in Ballygown in Mull. I have not yet traced Mary. I have searched for a McINTYRE family connection in Australia, and have found Dugald and Duncan McIntyre attending a burial of the son of John and Margaret McMillan (nee McDonald), but have no other information on Flora McIntyre's family in Mull (or perhaps from somewhere else in Argyll or perhaps even further away eg Inverness), or whether they came to Australia or not. Margaret McDONALD's parents were John McDONALD (brother of Hector McDONALD – Mac’s Hotel, Portland) and Flora LAMONT from Calnacnoc, Skye. They were married in Snizort, Inverness, Scotland in 1838. I have no other information on Flora LAMONT (1818 – 1878). Sometimes her name is LAMOND and sometimes LAMONT. My great grandparents – John McMILLAN and Margaret McDONALD (married in CofE, Digby in 1864) had a number of children. Their children were John Angus, Hector; Charles Alexander; Murdoch Alexander; David; Archibald John; Angus John; Margaret Ann; Flora Ann. I have not researched the McDONALD family as yet and am not sure if there were any other family members from the LAMONT family who came to Victoria other than Flora.. My grandfather John Angus McMILLAN (married Florence McGUINESS at Hotspur in 1909). The marriage record states that Florence was adopted by Elizabeth McGUINESS. Her birth certificate says that she was born in Bridport Street, South Melbourne in 1883. At the time of her marriage she was living in Hotspur, Victoria. I have not been able to trace Elizabeth McGuiness. Any information on Elizabeth McGUINESS who adopted my grandmother Florence McGUINESS (born - 1883; married 1909; died 1971) and the circumstances of that adoption would be appreciated. Florence’s birth certificate states that she was the child of Annie Jane McEACHERN who subsequently moved from Branxholme, Victoria Australia to NZ with her widowed mother, and other siblings when her father Angus McEACHERN passed away. I have one report that says that, before they left for NZ, they moved to Geelong for a short period of time. Annie had a second child before the family moved to NZ named Elsie Dolores (1890-92) who died in the Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. The McEACHERN family in NZ remained in contact with Florence and her husband John McMILLAN visited them. I have traced the McEACHERN family to Gore in Soutlhland New Zealand. Annie married Michael REGAN there (1894) and had three children. Sadly only one of these children lived to adulthood – Angus George REGAN who married Mary Jane MILLER in NZ in 1932. Angus McEACHERN (Annie's father) sailed with his father (Hugh), wife Ann (nee McDONALD) and their family from Tobermory on 28th October 1838 on board the vessel ‘British King’ bound for Australia arriving at Sydney on 1st March 1839. They were from Movern. On arrival some members of the family (Angus included ?) were engaged to work on Macarthur’s Station at Yass. The family remained there until 1846 when they overlanded to Victoria settling in the Casterton district. Hugh married twice – Mary Margaret STEWART (Children – Angus, William, Duncan, John ‘Long John;, Margaret, Johanna, Malcolm Stewart, Archibald, Catherine Livingstone and Sarah) and then Mary Ann CAMPBELL (Children - Jane and John). I have a reasonable amount of information about the later generations, and would willingly share records with others. I am interested in tracing the history of the streams of this family in Scotland, and widening my coverage of those in Australia and elsewhere. Thank you for any assistance that you can give me. Regards Libby (libbymcm@tpg.com.au)
Hello Peter The Ballarat Genealogical Society houses its collection including "fiche" and readers in the "Australiana Room" at the main Ballarat Library which means our resources are available to the general public during library hours, with a facility to accept donations to the Society for use of these resources. Members regularly donate their time to act as research assistants for visitors to the collection in the Australiana room. This relationship works very well indeed as it provides much more access for the general public and advertises the existence of our Society to a wider audience. Thanks Beryl, You certainly have all the detail. Thanks for writing it all up for the listers. They were all prominent families during those early days. I remember going to "Jellalabad" many years ago, when it was rundown and unoccupied. We chatted with a Roger Cummings, relative of Dowlings, who lived opposite at that time. We all must appreciate those who wrote this history down, many years ago, for the benefit of future generations. Sincerely in Searching.. Thelma (Bostock) Birrell.
But wait - there's more. Dowling Street in Mortlake is named after him. And there's a map showing Jellalabad Station and others. I'll see if there are any more mentions later. Hi Susan Have just had a look through the 1939 Centenary "Mortlake Dispatch" and in 1962 Thomas Dowling was a member of the Mortlake Pastoral Society formed in 1961. No mention of Benjamin amongst the pioneers, if that's any help. And I just fished out "Pastures of Peace: A Tapestry of Mortlake Shire" which was compiled by the Mortlake Historical Society for the Shire as a Bi-centennial project lists Cr T Dowling as Shire President for the following terms: 1865-68; 1874-48; 1881-95. He was also a Member of the Legislative Council from1886 to 1892 and from 1892 to 1904. The note says: "DOWLING Thomas. Bought JELLALABAD 1853, Mortlake Shire President 1865 and twenty other years." And this gives his years of office in the LA as 1856-1872, which contradicts the list I just quoted. Re JELLALABAD Station it says; 17,548 acres, 8,000 sheep) 1839 Keith King and John Down 1849 Edward Robe Bostock (So you need to talk to Thelma Birrell) 1852 JG Ware 1853 Thomas Dowling 1909 Subdivided A note with this says: "These dates from Pastoral Pioneers of AUstralia and may not be accurate; first day is shown as 1837 which is not correct." After the subdivision: I JELLALABAD 1909 Thomas Dowling 1915 GW Dowling and Gerald Cumming 1961 Dowling family sold its interest Part still owned by Hector Cumming, whose grandmother was a daughter of Thomas Dowling and who married TF Cumming of Stony Point. Part sold for Soldier Settlement after WWII. II ROCKGROVE G Murch 1939 Mrs Elizabeth G Murch 1944 Peter Cotter 1977 Peter Cotter died 1979 Bought by Gilberstons from Cotter's trustees. So that should clear it up for you. The MHS would have had access to the Shire records for their research. If you want a copy let me know. I remember Hector Cumming when I was a child. I knew we'd end up with a connection somewhere Susan! Hi Susan, I never thought to check "Pastures of Peace" from Mortlake. There is a mention on page 47 of Thomas Dowling - "In 1888, an Ararat to Warrnambool Railway League was formed to urge the contruction of a line through Mortlake linking those two towns. A branch of this league in Mortlake included the following people, J.A. Webster, Wells Brumley, Rev. Alexander, Thomas Montgomery, Thomas Dowling and Messrs. Small, Jackson, Whitson, Manson, McInnes and Dr. Sweetnam. The League brought to bear all the pressure it could exert and in 1890 a branch line from Terang to Mortlake was opened. In 1888, it took two hours to travel by coach to Terang; two years later, it took half an hour to travel that distance by train. The contractors for the line were Bloomfield Brothers. As an aid to construction, they built a tramway along Webster Street to Mill Street, along Mill Street to the Ararat Road and thence to the scoria pit. Some ratepayers wrote to the Council expressing their concern that the tramway engine could cause an accident in places where it was difficult to see it coming. When the Railway was completed this tramway was removed." On page 191 - JELLALABAD (17,438 acres, 8,000 sheep) 1839 Keth King and John Down 1849 Edward Robe Bostock 1852 J.G. Hi Susan, Hard copy of Minute Books commencing 1866 of former Shire of Mortlake are at Public Records Office PRO-14402/P1. Mortlake Historical Society probably have a copy of the microfilm too as Trish suggested. It was the Mortlake Road District from 1860-1864 and before that, part of a much larger area of Warrnambool Roads Board which included the old Shire of Hampden.Cr. T. Dowling is listed as President of Shire of Mortlake 1865-68, and 1874-1878 in "Pastures of Peace - A Tapestry of Mortlake Shire" and Thomas Dowling also mentioned on p208. Cheers, Kathy
I wonder if anyone would know where the minute books of the Hampden and Mortlake shires are kept? I have a discrepancy regarding Thomas Dowling and Benjamin Dowling as members of the boards. Aust Dictionary of Biog says Thomas was active for many years but McAlpine in "The Shire of Hampden" has Benjamin as the first Hon Sec (.p6) I really need to find which is accurate. Is it possible to check the records? Thank you very much, Susan Patterson

Good Morning Michelle, What a great time you must have had collecting all these photographs. I was interested in reading the names of Memorial Headstones at Apsley - the McKellar group. Robert McBeath McKellar is my cousin : Barbara Neale McKellar his Aunty : Elizabeth & Oliphant McKellar his Grandparents. Also at Apsley Cemetery there is a large Memorial Headstone for Peter McKellar + Barbara McBeath Meiklejohn [wife of Peter] + their son William who died Fovant England : Peter and Barbara are the Great Grandparents of Robert McBeath McKellar and parents of Oliphant McKellar. Have you a connection with the McKellar Family ? I have been trying to get my Cousins to pick up the Gauntlet and seek out their McKellar Ancestors, but to date I have not had a lot of success - but I am collecting as I come across any data along the way so would be very interested in receiving a copy of your McKellar photographs [ or anything else that you think may be of interest ]. Look forward to hearing from you. Cheers for now ...............
