    1. [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] CLAPP family interest
    2. Lynne Price
    3. Hello Listers I am at present researching our CLAPP family who came from around the Ballarat area. My main family of interest is the family of Robert and Julia Clapp (nee Brown) who married in Victoria in 1897. Their eldest son Robert Ivor CLAPP was born at Steiglitz, Vic. 21 April 1898. The family then moved to Illabarook and later Berringa. Two other children died in infancy and surviving children were Annie Allison CLAPP b. 1901 and Ernest Roy CLAPP b. 1907. I found other CLAPP families on the Digger BDM Indexes living in the Ballarat area and believe they may be connected to ours. If anyone has a connection to any of these CLAPP families I would love to hear from you. Regards Lynne Price - Victoria

    1. Re: [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] Grassdale
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Thank you everyone for your interest - I have received the information I needed offlist. The pre-emptive right was taken out fairly and squarely on the run. Which means Heritage Victoria and The Register of the National Estate have completely mixed up two Grassdales - one near Merino and one at Sale in Gippsland. For RNE, the URLs are too long to paste, go to http://www.environment.gov.au/cgi-bin/ahdb/search.pl and just type Grassdale into the place name. There are two, with very similar details. Ditto for the Victorian Heritage Register http://www.heritage.vic.gov.au/page.asp?ID=8 There is only one there, and it places the Western District details on the Sale one. The National Trust has got it right - but probably only because it has almost nothing on there about Grassdale at Sale. http://www.nattrust.com.au/trust_register/search_the_register/grassdale_estate for the Western District http://www.nattrust.com.au/trust_register/search_the_register/grassdale_homestead for the Gippsland one. But at least you get a picture. In passing, you can have a lot of fun with the registers. And, for the record: Grassdale at Sale was built by the King family of Rosedale for Dr Ffloyd Minter Peck (no connection to Coldhams), and since 1862-1864 has been owned by the Maclachlan family. It does not, and never has run sheep. Cheers Linda

    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi Everyone, I wonder if there is anyone out there who would have access to the Parish Map that covers the area around Grassdale, or any other similar map, that would show if there is a pre-emptive right around Grassdale, from the Grassdale Run. Grassdale is south-east of Merino. These usually show up as a large area of land (a square mile), with the name of the pastoral run (in this case Grassdale), that it refers to. There is also a small date shown under the name, on which it was granted. If anyone can locate those details, it would be appreciated. Cheers Linda kapana@netspace.net.au

    1. [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] Dawn Service at Kranji War Memorial
    2. Leone Fabre
    3. (apologies for X posting, am posting on the lists in case others are interested) Well have arrived back home after attending the Dawn Service here at Kranji War Memorial in Singapore...... It was a very moving experience from the Maori culteral group display, to the service, the lone piper, the laying of the wreaths by the various High Commissioners, Heads of Defence Forces from everywhere, High School Captains of the International school and even the Australian and NZ Football Club of Singapore thru to the usual Gunfire Breakfast! Kranji War Memorial honours the men from Britain, Australia, Canada, Sri Lanka, India, Malaya, the Netherlands and New Zealand who gave their lives for freedom in World War II. We were all seated behind the marked graves of 4,000 servicemen who died during the Japanese Occupation that stand in neat rows on manicured lawns. Another 24,000 names of soldiers and airforce men who died but whose bodies were never recovered are inscribed on 12 columns. There is usually around 7000 people that attend the Dawn Service In Singapore a bit different to other Dawn Services we have experienced at Maree where there were just FIVE of us or the ones at Melbourne of around 30,000.....but each and everyone of them are just as special to help us all remember the courage, endurance and mateship that are still relevant today that was established on 25 April 1915 when the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula. I have posted a couple of photos taken this morning on my blog.
