    1. [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] Help please Atkins & Portland Shipping
    2. Pat Liebich
    3. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who may have any information on Benjamin & Bridget Atkins who lived in Portland in the 1840’s. The following is the only early history we have on Bridget - George Marshall of London organised a shipload of "bounty" immigrants to supplement the labour needs of the Port Phillip, Bridget Condrick/Conrick at 16 yrs of age arrived on the “William Metcalf” in Port Phillip on 15 November, 1839. She was assigned to a Captain Charles Scott of the Royal Marines as a Child's Maid for a yearly salary of 12 pounds. I Benjamin & Bridget’s daughter Caroline was b. 27.4.1844 & Chr. at St Stephans Church. Portland. Apparently Caroline received a Centenary Medal around 1938 in recognition as one of the early Portland Settlers. I was excited to find their names (see below) on Jenny Fawcetts site “Port Fairy & Portland Passengers 1844 Index 1” We do not know if the Benjamin Atkins listed under their names is a relative. Atkins Mr & Mrs B D Atkins Benjamin D Unfortunately Jenny’s wonderful site is up for sale. I tried to contact her to find out the name of the ship & date without success. I believe Jenny is taking time out to attend to family matters. Once again I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has the ship details. Regards Pat (W.A.) Internal Virus Database is out-of-date. 3. Hi Dale, Usually the Naringal Cudgee area. The Naringal School established in 1877 was originally called the Tallangatta State School but this was changed because of the confusion with the Tallangatta in NE Victoria. The parish of Tallangatta is bounded on the east by the Hopkins River, on the south by the Allansford-Cobden Road (Allansford township was split between Tallangatta and Mepunga parishes), on the east by Rollos Road and on the north by the Mount Emu Creek. What families are you looking at? Hope this is a help, Helen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dale Watts" <wattd@iinet.net.au> To: <AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2007 5:00 PM Subject: [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] Place Name >I am wondering if anyone can tell me what the Place Name Abbreviation TALL >stands for. 2. Dennis Fyfe
    3. Hi Beryl, Thanks for the information. I didn't know about the memorial stone. If I'm in the Portland area I'll have to look for it. Last December, my family put a plaque on the History Wall to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of Andrew William Fyfe arriving at Portland. However, we haven't found much information about his activities between working for the Hentys at Merino Downs in 1856-7 and his marriage to Eliza Egan at Sandford in 1866. If anyone has come across records relating to him, I would be very interested. Vanda Savill mentions him on p25 of "Dear Friends" as having an agreement with the Hentys in 1856 and 1857, but then there is a nine year gap in our information. There's a memorial stone at Portland for the landing of that particular ship, just near the new Maritime Centre. Anne Grant might be able to tell us the story behind it. I think it was put there by the descendants of one passenger/family. 3. Hi Beryl "Struan" Estate, later Paschendale was acquired by the Soldier Settlement Commission in March 1919, a clearing sale was held in July and then it was opened for inspection. Applicants were interviewed at the Casterton Courthouse in August 1919. Permits for occupation by successful applicants were issued in Oct 1919. Most applicants had taken up residence by the end of October 1919. Many thanks for your offer. Regards Daryl At 11:24 AM 25/06/2007, you wrote: >Daryl, do you have a date that the estate was set up? 3. Ada, Thanks for the explanation. By the way, I have a copy of two pages (the first and the fifth? containing Andrew Fyfe) of the December 1856 "Severn" passenger list. I'm happy to check these pages for other listers who believe their ancestors arrived on at Portland on the "Severn". Families on the two pages include Bartlett, Bennett, Boucher, Brownlee?, Campbell, Collett, Conway, Cordner?, Cornish, Cowland, Dato?, Knight and Nicholls. Singles include Adam, Avery, Barnes, Bastion?, Barnett?, Brown, Cameron, Campbell, Carnow?, Clarke, Clements, Cornish, Cowland, Down, Dozer?, Fyfe, Getty, Gordon, Hammond and Henderson. Some parts of he photocopy from the microfilm are difficult to read, so I may have misinterpreted some names.
