    1. [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] Vern McCallum Historical Photo Exhibition - 25/26 August 2007
    2. Geoff Corner
    3. Hello all, A reminder that this year's Annual Exhibition of the Vern McCallum Collection of historical photographs of the Western District of Victoria will be held on 25 and 25 August in the Digby Memorial Hall (at the intersection of the Hamilton-Dartmoor and Portland-Casterton roads). This will be a whole-of-town weekend, with the thousand or more photographs, a McCallum Family Reunion, and extensive displays arranged by the Digby Hall Committee. The photographs document the social history of the district from the 1860s and show many local people at work and play. The displays include Vintage tractors and cars, stationary engines, wood turning, old tools, local family memorabilia, and a Cobb & Co coach (that will be providing rides). The guided Digby Historic Walk will reveal the surprising depth of history hidden behind Digby's small-town face. The Exhibition will run from 10.00 am to 5 pm on both days. Cost is $10 per adult, children under 16 free. The cost includes entry to the photographic and all other displays and activities, including the McCallum Family Reunion, but not rides on the Cobb & Co coach. The Digby Delights (aka the ladies of the Hall Committee and community) will again be serving light refreshments at a very reasonable price. Full details on http://www.mccallum-collection.org including a write-up of the 2006 Exhibition just to give you a taste of what's on offer. See you there - and remember to bring along your own photographs, albums and memories! Geoff Corner

    1. [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] McMillan/MacMillan family from around Mt Gambier
    2. Elizabeth McMillan
    3. A few years ago when I was working in PNG, someone wrote to me asking me if I was related to the McMillan family that was from around Mt Gambier. I was only starting my family history research at that stage, and in ignorance, I said no - as I had not really considered how close Mt Gambier is to the places around Hamilton where my family settled. My McMillan family arrived in Portland from Mull on the New Zealander in 1853 (Archibald McMillan and his wife Flora (nee McIntyre) and their children - Ann, Alexander, John and Christy. I had the pleasure of going to a photographic exhibition in Digby Vic in about 2004 - Vern McCallum's photos and Daryl Povey was there providing people with lots of interesting advice and information. Daryl mentioned to me that there were a couple of women with McMillan/ MacMillan connections having afternoon tea. I went in and introduced myself. They had some photographic albums and we looked thorugh the photos together. It was amazing to me to see their relatives had such a strong physical resemblance to ours. We talked for a while and realised that I was the person that they had written to in PNG. So I took their names and contact details with the view to being in touch. I have unfortunately mislaid their names and contact details and I am wondering if anyone might know these two women and could pass my message on to them or provide me with their contact details. Although I am now working in Samoa, my ongoing email address is libbymcm@tpg.com.au I have contacted the Mt Gambier Historical Group (http:// www.seol.net.au/sefhg/) and have also considered placing an advert in the Mt Gambier local paper. Any ideas or assistance would be much appreciated.
