Hi Lex I'm coming to Canberra for a meeting on Friday week - 7th - (meeting is on Saturday) and wondered, if I made the effort to get there a bit earlier, if we could possibly meet up and see if we can help each other in any way with our family history puzzles. Would you have any time free on that afternoon? cheers cynth Cynthia Kuiper Ph 9449 6855 Mob: 041 449 6855 ----- Original Message ---- From: Lex Foley <lexf@webone.com.au> To: aus-vic-western-district@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, June 11, 2007 11:04:46 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] David Power m Anne Pile Hello Cynthia, I am hoping that this is the David Power that also had the station "Cashmere" that was also part of that area. Sorry about this but I am doing this of the top of my head at the moment, I thought that they were brothers and that the Dr. ran a hospital out of a hut there. I had been chasing details a few years back of them and the one that I was looking for was married in South Australia and also had all or most of their children were born there. My gg-grndmother was Bridget Power who was married to a John Power and they had one son and several daughters. I dont know what happened to John or the son who was also called John, but the rest of the family came out to Australia, but not all at once. My g-grandmother Eliza and her sister Mary came out in 185? and from what I could find out it was stated that they were going to relations. Mary was married at Cashmere Station in 1853 and Eliza in 1854. Going on records David Power had sold Cashmere Station just prior to Mary and Eliza arriving and I have not found anything tying David in with the two girls but also haven't found anyone else that was related. The other thing is that they all converged and lived in the Coleraine area. My Powers came from Shanagovern, Limerick and I was in touch years ago with Kate Press who said that they may have worked for her grandfather in Ireland, but lost contact and didn't follow it up. I live in Canberra and from your phone number I take it that you are in Sydney, I am just hoping that we have a match as I would love to be able to tie them all together. Hoping to hear from you soon. I am researching my ggg grandfather Thomas GRAY who married Jessie Lamont in Wannon in 1856, and lived mainly in the Naracoorte SA to Apsley Vic area. I am trying to find exactly when he came to Australia, and have narrowed the period down to between March 1851 and May 1856. Although Thomas was born in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland in 1834, he was living in Edinburgh at the time of the 1851 census, where his occupation was listed as a gardener. At this stage the evidence leads me to believe that Thomas came out to Aus on his own, and that he immigrated into Victoria. Through searching the PROV Unassisted Immigration to Victoria index, I found 4 possibilities for my Thomas: Family Name First Name Age Month Year Ship Port Fiche Page GRAY THOMAS 21 JAN 1854 SOUTH CAROLINA B 059 001 GRAY THOS 21 OCT 1855 JAMES BAINES B 100 006 GRAY ---- MR 20 DEC 1853 JESSICA B 058 001 GRAY ---- MR 21 NOV 1852 AUSTRALIAN B 015 001 I am wondering if anyone could look up the actual passenger list entries for me to see if any is a match. The James Baines ship seems the most likely because of the accurate age given. Thomas's age has been consistently accurate throughout all his records, which I find most unusual! Hi Trish I was interested to see that your Mary Blewett arrived on the Clara in 1854. My Richard and Priscilla Harvey disembarked at Belfast (Port Fairy) from the Clara in 1854 and stayed there for the rest of their lives. They had 10 children but not all survived childhood. My grandmother Priscilla Harvey was born in Port Fairy in 1870 and was their youngest daughter. Also on board the Clara were Richard's cousin John and his wife Mary Semmens. It seems that they left Port Fairy. I wonder if there are others on the list who have descendants from the Clara 1854? Beth Codling bcodling2@bigpond.com
Hi Trish, Thanks very much for this information. It is good to catch up again! Yes we did go to Henty, it was great. More about that in another message - just wanted to send a quick response as I'm on my way to TAFE to meet up with the student I'm tutoring this afternoon. Interesting that you should have a connection to the Pagan family - don't know if you have a copy of the shipping list, but if you do you will see that your Pagans and my James and Bridget Rapkins are on the same page! If you haven't got a copy of the list I'll make one for you if you'd like it. Must go, thanks again, Julie H. -----Original Message----- From: aus-vic-western-district-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-vic-western-district-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of tsymonds Sent: Monday, 13 August 2007 12:28 PM To: aus-vic-western-district@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] Tuckett Hi again Julie, Long time no speak. Greetings listers, Does anyone know anything of a person named Tuckett (sorry first name not known) who came to Australia as third mate on ‘Ward Chipman’ in 1841? He worked for some years as a merchant in Melbourne. Later, in the 1860’s I think, he took up a run called Springbank near Casterton. I am not connected to the Tuckett family; my interest is in the ship ‘Ward Chipman’ as my great great grandparents James and Bridget Rapkins were passengers. Hello Kathy Thank you for your reply to my query. It would be wonderful if your husband's family had any connections to or knows of any of my families in these areas. I am at present researching my Mother's side of the family. The families I am interested in are Joseph & Amelia Bennett who moved to Apsley sometime in the late 1800's and who are both buried in the Apsley Cemetery. They were my mother's maternal Great Grandparents. Their daughter Ada Amelia Bennett was my mother's grandmother. Also another family by the name of PITMAN who were friends of the Bennett family and who lived at Apsley from 1884 to 1889 and then at Edenhope until about 1892. My mother's aunt Louisa CAMPBELL married Ben SHERRIFF. My mother remembers that the Sherriff family may have owned a garage at Apsley. We would love to make contact with any descendants of the these families still living in the Apsley district. cheers Lynne ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kathy Creer" <kcreer@aapt.net.au> To: <aus-vic-western-district@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 11, 2007 6:08 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] Apsley/Edenhope history group > Hi Lynne > > Don't know about a group but my husband's family appears to cover a good > deal of the population of these two towns. > What names are you interested in? > Cheers, > Kathy Creer > Adelaide, South Australia > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Lynne Price" <lynkev21@datafast.net.au> > To: <aus-vic-western-district@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Saturday, August 11, 2007 10:40 AM > Subject: [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] Apsley/Edenhope history group > > > > Hello Listers > > Would anyone on the LIST be able to tell me if there is a family history > > group at either Apsley or Edenhope. > > If not, what other towns nearby might have a history group. > > > > Regards > > > > Lynne Price > > > > ------------------------------- > > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > > AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' > > without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > > > > > -- > > No virus found in this incoming message. > > Checked by AVG Free Edition. > > Version: 7.5.476 / Virus Database: 269.11.13/946 - Release Date: 8/10/2007 > > 3:50 PM > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

Hello Listers I am researching my Great Great Grandparents, Joseph BENNETT and wife Amelia (nee BRICE) who lived at Apsley, Vict. Amelia died in 1895 & Joseph in 1907, both are buried in the Apsley cemetery. Joseph & Amelia were from Somerset, England and arrived in Australia in 1858. I would love to know more about Joseph & Amelia and their life in Apsley. I anyone has connections to this family or could point me in the direction of other researchers who may be able to help, I would be very grateful. kind regards Lynne Price
Hello Listers Would anyone on the LIST be able to tell me if there is a family history group at either Apsley or Edenhope. If not, what other towns nearby might have a history group. Regards Lynne Price

Hello Westerners, In my indexing of the "non-issued Probates", I have come across a file on: John TWOMEY a partner with his brothers in the Mount Rouse station who was lost overboard between Cape Otway and Warrnambool whilst travelling with his wife ond one of his three (?) children on board "WESTERN". As there was no body found, so no inquest, and I don't know if, at the date of his death, 5 April 1865, it was reported in a local newspaper? Regardless, there is a report from his brother on the search, affidavits from the Captain and first mate of the vessel, and of his wife. This may interest Western history / family history bods. Found in VPRS 7933/P1, "Non-Issued Probates" Unit 24, item 1287. A big file, because, apart from the evidence on his death, there is much discussion on his estate. There is also a very big file in VPRS 259/P1, unit 86, case 938 in "Supreme Court Equity Case Files" : Mary Twomey and infants proceeded against Daniel Twomey and infant. re "Kolor" station Mount Rouse. Hope that's of interest. Regards Ada Ada Ackerly. Melbourne Formerly Ackerly Docusearch
