Dear listers, This is a message to express my appreciation to all those who made the Stawell Family History Expo such a great success. I had a truly wonderful day on Sunday. I know that there were some stall holders there from groups other than those covered by the Goldfields and the Western District lists to which I am sending this message, so a big thank you to them as well. I was truly touched by the friendliness and the willingness to help that I experienced from everyone. I even managed to make contact with someone descended from one of the ‘mystery’ persons in my family, and solved a puzzle I’d been working on for ages. Thank you Janice from Rupanyup! Many thanks once again, and congratulations to all who were involved. Julie M. Hopper. No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Good afternoon everyone, Can someone tell me please if the Ballarat & District Genealogy Society is getting copies of "all" Victorian Newspapers on microfilm? Friends thought it was the Public Records Ballarat but I have emailed them and that is not the case. Regards Sally

Greetings listers, Apologies if this is a repetition. I am forwarding the following message to this list in the hope that someone may be familiar with these names – I have a Digger entry for the death of Alfred BUSH, son of Louisa RAMUS, date and place of death MINY 1971. I assume this is my Alf BUSH, and that the place is Minyip. I have had contact with other researchers, including RAMUS family researchers, who were very helpful, but they are as mystified by Alf as I am. Regards Julie M. Hopper. _____ From: Julie M Hopper [mailto:juliemhopper@hotkey.net.au] Sent: Sunday, 23 September 2007 5:39 PM To: 'AUS-VIC-GOLDFIELDS@rootsweb.com' Subject: Surnames Bush, Bushnie, Bushine, Ramus Greetings listers, Is anyone researching the names BUSH, BUSHNIE, BUSHINE, and RAMUS? I am trying to establish what links if any there are with these names and my START family of the Ararat area. I have Alfred Edward BUSH born (I think) Sebastopol about 1892, served in the AIF in WW1. His birth is listed in Digger as Alfred Edward BUSHINE with mother Amy Louisa nee RAMUS and father Frederick BUSHINE. I have his war service record for WW1 which lists three next of kin for him. One is ‘Louie Bush’ which I think refers to the Amy Louisa BUSHINE/BUSHNIE nee RAMUS mentioned above. This name is then crossed out. The second is ‘Mrs. A. Bush (of Maryborough)’ who I at first thought was his mother – it is likely to be Annie BUSH nee START wife of (another) Alfred BUSH. The third is ‘Bessie Start’ who is my grandmother. Alf BUSH was closely associated with my grandmother and grandfather, Bessie and Frank START, for many years after WW1. He appears in a family wedding photo taken in 1919. I am trying to establish what the links are with any or all of these families and so any help would be much appreciated. Any help or contact from anyone most gratefully received. Please contact me off list if preferred. Julie M. Hopper. No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Hello Robyn, Beth, Beryl and all, You might be interested to hear a little more on the lightstation. In the former school room there are copies of a letter to the Minister of Education, Melbourne which is as follows: "We the undersigned parents and residents at Cape Otway desire to bring to your notice the number of children at this place, and the disadvantage they labor under in the total absence of provision for their educational requirements. Ther are at Cape Otway at the present time sixteen children within school ages, besides others under four years of age, who will be fit for instruction in a short time. The distance to the nearest state school at Middleton (Apollo Bay) is sixteen miles. We humbly solicit your careful consideration of our isolated position and the wants of our children in the matter of education with earnest hope, that you may feel justified in granting us such assistance as will meet our care, and place us on an equal footing in this respect, with the rest of the community. The government steamer "Victoria" will make her usual half yearly visit to this station in January next. In the event of your taking a favourable view of the prayer of your petitioners, and according us the desired boon we respectrully suggest that steps might be taken in time to avail of the opportunities of sending teacher and school requisites per "Victoria". We have the honor to be Sir, Your most obedient servants, Cape Otway. 26th. November 1880. William Cordell, P.H.S. Fisher, James Anderson, J.E. Kelsall, William Stevens." The response was that Mary Dwyer did indeed commence in the light and airy front room of the telegraph station in 1881. It was school number 2352. The other information given in the display at the old telegraph station was that the school operated for over 50 years with numbers fluctuating according to the successes of the nearby settlers and light house staff changes. Some older shildren went away to school. Laura Skilton, the 14 year old daughter of an assistant lighthouse keeper travelled on the supply ship "Lady Loch", to her Melbourne school in 1896. In the 1960s the Cape Otway School re-opened for 3 years for Joan and Robert Brack's 10 chidlren. It sounds as if it wasn't as simple as the school remaining continuously open though. I didn't know whether I was going to be as fortunate as I was in bringing away photographed copies of the information to be found there. I should also have written down this information shouldn't I? Hello all Thanks for sharing your knowledge and news of the restoration Janet. Most of the lighthouses and remote family homes had a room or special area designated as the schoolroom. Usually the mothers had to supervise the children's lessons along with everything else (as they do when studying through the Distance Education Centre even today). More fortunate families had a paid or subsidised person to act as the children's supervisors. Hello Janet and others During the 1980s and I assume prior to then, the children of lighthouse keepers were taught by what were then the Victorian Primary and Secondary Correspondence Schools. These schools combined in 1995 to become the Distance Education Centre Victoria-a P-12 school. I was an Emergency Teacher at the Primary Correspondence School during the 1980s and there were several families enrolled. I can recall a couple of teachers flying in by helicopter to do a "home visit" to Wilson's Prom. Children living in lighthouses in Bass Strait were also students. The year 2009 will be the centenary year for the school. Initially in 1909 the correspondence lessons were for young people of secondary school age who wished to become teachers. The lessons enabled them to pass qualifying exams. The primary school began in 1914 after an appeal from a Mrs Mabel Prewett who lived near Beech Forest in the Otways and wanted help to teach her sons. They were 8 miles from the nearest school. Hello List, My interest in teachers who taught the children of the light keepers has been rekindled after a visit there during the week. Vida McDonald, a sister of my grandmother, taught the children of the light keepers' families in the early 1920s. I'd love to hear from anyone who can suggest where I could obtain further information, or anyone who knows something of the teachers at the lightstation. Regards, Janet. --------------------------------------------------- Letter content was scanned by WinAntiVirus 2005. No threat detected. Please visit www.winantivirus.com for more details.

If you forgot your card, you had to say either the "Court" (Victoria, Fine Arts, USA, Catering, etc) and an attendant at the turnstile got out the massive albums, checked you looked like the photo, then granted entry. Hi Cynthia, Do you have an idea as to what time you will be in Canberra? Regards Lex
Hi Lex, much depends on whether it is a hassle getting out of Sydney after I put the dog in storage (APEC conference road closures and mayhem everywhere) - so I'll be leaving Sydney about 10am and am anticipating it could take about an hour to get out of town. So think I will get there around 2ish but am happy to meet with you whenever as fully aware you will be at work so might not be available until late evening. If you can't get away I'll take myself off to the Natl Library till you are free so pls just work your time as suits you and I'll fit in cynth Cynthia Kuiper Ph 9449 6855 Mob: 041 449 6855 ----- Original Message ---- From: Lex Foley <lexf@webone.com.au> To: aus-vic-western-district@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, September 3, 2007 8:24:41 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] David Power m Anne Pile Hi Cynthia, Do you have an idea as to what time you will be in Canberra? Hello Cynthia, I will certainly make time and I welcome the chance to meet you. It will be good to discuss the "Powers" and hope that we will be able to find out more.. I will be at work tomorrow (Thursday) and will try and ring you sometime during the day. Regards Lex Cynthia Kuiper wrote: > Hi Lex > > I'm coming to Canberra for a meeting on Friday week - 7th - (meeting is on Saturday) and wondered, if I made the effort to get there a bit earlier, if we could possibly meet up and see if we can help each other in any way with our family history puzzles.
