Yesterday I posted an email about my Bray connections in St Arnaud. I have had some delightful replies and offers of help both off and on list. This made me remember a book I have titled "Eucalyptus, Essence of Australia" a limited edition of 350 books by Des Shiel published in 1985. I once mentioned this book on I think the Victorian list many years ago and offered to look up names from the extensive index. I had a long correspondence with a family in the USA as a result. The book is "The story of the Eucalyptus oil industry - and of the "eucy" men, and their contribution to the Australian bush tradition." If you had family involved in the "Eucy" industry and there is a chance that might rate a mention in the book feel free to email me and I don't mind looking up the index and passing on any relevant information. I do remember that many of the people who asked before had no success but there is no harm in trying. Lionel Bray of St Arnaud rates several mentions as do his father and grandfather ie William Bray, father of the 20 children. Now I had better answer those replies I have to my Bray posting. My wife celebrated her 21st birthday again today so I haven't been able to spend as many hours playing with the computer and answering emails as I usually would. David Central Coast NSW
Hi Folks Anne and Iain Grant have asked me to pass on the information below. Contacts are at the end of the Press Release. Feel free to pass this information on to anyone who may be able to assist. Or post it on other lists with the Admin's permission. Cheers Beryl O'Gorman Greensborough Victoria Australia List Admin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Iain Grant [mailto:iagrant@datafast.net.au] Sent: Thursday, 3 January 2008 12:47 AM Subject: Great Ocean Road PRESS RELEASE THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD: WHO BUILT IT? The year 2007 saw the 75th Anniversary of the opening of the Great Ocean Road, and marked with many celebrations as befitted this iconic road. Many speeches were given, as were thanks to the ex-servicemen and others whose toil, sweat, blisters, hardships, heat, cold and adversity resulted in such an astonishing memorial to those who fought for Australia during World War One.. Commenced in August 1919, the 400 kilometre stretch of road from Lorne in the east of Victoria, to Allansford in the west, it was not until 29th November 1932 that the road was officially opened by Victoria's Lieutenant Governor, Sir William Irvine. During the intervening years some 2400 ex-servicemen and 600 civilians laboured on this massive project, initially earning 10 shillings and sixpence a day in sustenance payments. This was shortened to "susso" and was the forerunner of the "Dole" as we know it today. The men lived a life of hardship in tent cities situated along the length of the road. Most records of the Great Ocean Road Trust were destroyed deliberately during World War Two leaving historians with absolutely no idea who formed to workforce that built the road. Who bent their backs to earn their "susso?" Who built the bridges? Who engineered the roads that hug the hills? Who surveyed the trackless wastes to forge ahead and open up the land to farmers and graziers? Who supplied this army of men with their daily provisions? The Salvation Army was of course there to support the men as they had in wartime, but who else supplied pastoral and other care? Who supplied the nursing that injured men might need? Who provided the entertainment in the camps at night, as men parted from their loved ones yet again, sought relaxation and succour? Was your grand-dad, father, uncle, or brother, a worker on the road? Did an aunt, great grandma, mother, or sister assist with the feeding, cooking and other care for these men? Portland Family History Group is currently attempting to compile as complete a list as is humanly possible of those who had a connection with the road. We would appreciate any and all information about your relatives or friends that you may be able to supply, like names, age, where from, service in the armed forces, how long employed on the road, which camp they were allocated to, copies of photos, in fact even the smallest piece of information would be of assistance in collating a list before this important knowledge is lost to all of us forever. Portland Family History Group can be contacted on 03-55222266, or historyhouse@glenelg.vic.gov.au, or PO Box 409, Portland. Or I can be contacted directly at iagrant@datafast.net.au Please be assured that every care will be taken to ensure the list as complete as possible. Please pass this on to any others persons or organisations who may be able to assist. Iain J. Grant For Portland Family History Group Iain J. Grant, 31 Browning St, Portland 3305. Hello David and Sandra Do you have a copy of "Track of the Years" as the Brays get a mention in the index and I could forward you any info from this book. I see you have some missing death dates - do you have access to the Death Index 1921-1985 - if not I could look at this for you too. We lived in St Arnaud 1960 to 1971 and remember the Bray twins who I think had a draper's shop Sincerely Marcia Penny Canberra David & Sandra Bales wrote: > William BRAY born St Austell Cornwall in 1839, settled in St Arnaud in > about1874 with his 1st wife Sarah Shueard and their 7 children. Hi all Richard RATCLIFFE of Lancashire, England d. May 1898 in the Boort area and is buried in the Boort cemetery, grave 122. Also buried in the grave are three members of a BUTTERWORTH family: John, Elizabeth and Ewan. I've been trying to connect Richard somehow to the BUTTERWORTHs. It's possible, of course, that the grave was simply reused and there is no real connection. Info I would love to have: 1. Date and place of birth for Elizabeth BUTTERWORTH who died in 1949. 2. A photo of grave 122 -- even if it's just a patch of grass with no headstone. Richard's daughter and son-in-law Frederick and Alice Ratcliffe BECK also lived in the Boort area with Richard. After Harriet's death, Frederick moved his family to New Zealand. I have information on the BECKs that I would be willing to share. Thanks!! Margaret Seattle, Washington State USA
