    3. Hello Robbo, Have you tried the Australian Electoral Rolls which have recently become available on Ancestry? I haven't a subscription, so can't give you an address, but I looked up the index on www.ancestry.com.au and there are several entries for a Susanna Victoria McIntyre, listed under a couple of different electorates. 3. I have recently received information that a relative, Susannah McIntyre, ran the Sea Foam guest house at Port Campbell back around 1910. Does anyone have any idea how I can check this out and/or discover where she finished up. I have been unable to locate a death or marriage record for this lady and she does not appear in the Vic death indexes, either under her own name or as a child of her parents. the older of the tworobbos

I was quite surprised to find only 211, and many women who would have been active in WCTU and local churches, seemed not to be listed. I've found the answer: I don't know who supervised the gluing together of the sheets, but it now transpires that many women, in signing the Williamstown sheet, gave their street address, but left off "Williamstown" thinking, obviously, that Wtn sheets would stay together . The sheets were not glued following one another, but randomly, attached to totally unrelated country and city areas, so the designation "Williamstown " did not appear, so was not in the transcription, hence they do not show up when "Williamstown" is entered for the address. The same applies to Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, etc.etc. Great Ryrie st : locals know is Geelong, but a listing for Geelong leaves off such street only addresses, and they must be searched for. And that's as it should be... transcribers cannot enter what is not there!! But for local historians trying to get together a local listing, this creates heaps of missing persons. I have been systematically searching every page to see if a group of Williamstown residents are glued, for example, between "Yandoit" and "Cobden" (pages 15 and 16) where I found 19 with street addresses only, and only 3 who added "Williamstown" What began as an exercise to check the spelling and interpretation of surnames from a "Williamstown" search, has grown into a big job. Williamstown groups are spread out between (at least) pages 15 to 746... sometimes only 2 names on the pasted strip, sometimes 20 odd. Just thought I'd pass this on for people checking areas, as I was. Regards Ada Ackerly

    3. Thanks for this Ian, love your sight. Unfortunately not much luck with Mortlake cemetery. David Venson and Mary WEST are mine. George WEST and his wife (another Mary, unnamed) aren't mine (as far as I have found out anyway). I have an email (somewhere) from Craige Proctor at MDHS saying Amelia is George/Mary's daughter. So that leaves Elizabeth WEST. From memory, I think Craige said this is also George's daughter. Will try and find the email he sent to sort them out. I couldn't find the Thomas you mentioned - think you may have meant George? Thanks again for your help. 2. tsymonds
    3. Hi All, DAVID VENSON WEST of Mortlake-Vic For a number of years I've been searching out my WEST family in Australia, which began with the arrival of David Venson WEST in 1832 with the Henty family. He worked for them as a shepherd both in Tasmania and the Western District of Victoria before settling in Mortlake, where he married Mary BLEWETT, the town's first schoolteacher. According to family legend, David WEST arrived in Australia with a brother - but I've never been able to find any sign of him. Their parents were Stephen WEST and Ruth Venson WILLIAMS - no idea where they originated (I think Stephen was Northampton, and Ruth was from Tunbridge Wells, but not confirmed), but David says he was born in Sussex. Does anyone else have any WEST family with parents Stephen/Ruth? I found out about 12 months ago that David WEST had a cousin who was living in Mortlake at the same time - John WEST, son of Henry WEST of Northampton. When I traced John's family back to England I found that there were in fact five cousins of David WEST who moved to Victoria. Does anyone else have them, or know what became of them? I have traced them back in England, but nothing in Australia. I am particularly interested in the three younger siblings, as I haven't been able to find out anything about them other than their arrival in the Victorian Assisted Immigrants lists, any help with them would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Trish Nowra NSW Two cousins, JOHN WEST and his sister MELICENT WEST arrived 1855 - JOHN WEST Baptised: 15 November 1816, Collingtree-Northampton. Parents: Henry and Elizabeth West Died: 16 May 1900 (headstone); 1900, aged 84 years, Upper Maffra, Victoria (1900/7328). Children: Fanny WEST Emigration: Arrived in Australia November 1852 aboard "Chalmers" with his family and sister Melicent WEST. Mortlake: John moved to Mortlake and carried on dairying on the Webster Estate for 10 years, around the time David West and family were in Mortlake; John and David West also purchased a small farm each in the town. John left Mortlake in 1869, following the death of David Venson West (died 26 January 1867), so John moved on after he lost this family tie to Mortlake. MELICENT WEST Baptised: 18 June 1820, Collingtree-Northamptonshire. Parents: Henry and Elizabeth West (father: labourer) Arrived Australia aboard "Chalmers" in November 1852, aged 32 years, accompanied by brother John WEST, his wife Mary and their three children. Three more cousins arrived 1855; I have been unable to trace any of these three - ELIZABETH WEST Baptised: 22 March 1818, Collingtree, Northampton.. Parents: Henry and Elizabeth West Emigrated to Australia as an Assisted Passenger with sister Mary and brother Thomas aboard "Northumberland, 28 April 1855. 3. Dear Daryl, No there doesn't appear to be a link between the Brays but I won't say one won't be found some time in the future. William Bray did arrive in SA with his widowed mother and 4 sisters, one of whom was my gr gr grandmother. The sisters all remained in SA in the Adelaide Hills, Bordertown and Kapunda and William married in SA and the first of his 20 children were also born around Mt Lofty. William's father was also a William Bray b 1805 died St Austell 1844. William who died in Cornwall in 1844 where he was tin mining had a brother John Penhall BRAY b 1808 who also came to SA. I haven't found any Thomas Brays in these early generations. The first Thomas I can find is one born 1873 Lexton died 1955 St Arnaud. I can't find any PROUT or MAHON entries in my family tree either so don't have any known links so far.Perhaps one will turn up in the future. 3. Thanks for your kind offer David would you please see if there are any Egan names listed in the index. Regards Pat -----Original Message----- From: aus-vic-western-district-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-vic-western-district-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of David & Sandra Bales Sent: Thursday, 3 January 2008 7:18 PM To: aus-vic-western-district@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] Eucalyptus industry in western Victoria Yesterday I posted an email about my Bray connections in St Arnaud. I have had some delightful replies and offers of help both off and on list. This made me remember a book I have titled "Eucalyptus, Essence of Australia" a limited edition of 350 books by Des Shiel published in 1985. I once mentioned this book on I think the Victorian list many years ago and offered to look up names from the extensive index. I had a long correspondence with a family in the USA as a result. The book is "The story of the Eucalyptus oil industry - and of the "eucy" men, and their contribution to the Australian bush tradition." If you had family involved in the "Eucy" industry and there is a chance that might rate a mention in the book feel free to email me and I don't mind looking up the index and passing on any relevant information. I do remember that many of the people who asked before had no success but there is no harm in trying. Lionel Bray of St Arnaud rates several mentions as do his father and grandfather ie William Bray, father of the 20 children. Now I had better answer those replies I have to my Bray posting. My wife celebrated her 21st birthday again today so I haven't been able to spend as many hours playing with the computer and answering emails as I usually would.
