Is there an email address for Warrnambool Hist. Society? Also does anyone live in Cobden that could do a lookup for me.? I am searching for a book called "Angel of the Bush". It was written by ...?Sargent. It is supposed to be about my g. grandmother Susannah Beames (Quinn) and her time as a mid wife in Timboon. She died 1925. Been searching everywhere (State Library etc.) no luck. Just thought these two places might have/know of it. Many thanks, Sally Flynn, Queensland

Seeking descendants of Ann Jane Membrey who died at Geelong on 4 September, 1969 @ 84 years of age. Born @ GARVOC, dau of William & Jane Lambert. At the time of her death she lived in Kilgour Street, Geelong. She had four daughters: Clytie, Lorna (Mrs Jones), Gladys and Ethel. Daughters were born circa 1917 to 1930. Any help to put me in touch with this branch of the family would be much appreciated
Hello all, I am one of the lurkers, brought out by the McSwain references. I am a descendant of Donald. My family interests (all from the Western District & Wimmera areas) are: David JOHNSTON / Janet REID (Paradise, St Arnaud, Stawell) William STEWART / Elizabeth FERGUSON (Barkly, St Arnaud, Moonambel) Frederick CORDES / Anna GNEIL (Murtoa) Thomas LOATS / Mary PRYOR (Hamilton, Rupanyup, Geelong) Charles ELLIS / Margaret STEEDMAN (Daylesford, Buninyong, Murtoa, Rupanyup) Henry PENNY / Elizabeth NICHOLLS (Boolite, Warracknabeal, Minyip) Donald McSWAIN / Flora McLEOD (Warrnambool, Framlingham, Berriwillock
Dear All, I joined this group quite early in its infancy and so I thought it is about time to re-submit my interests. I am interested in the QUINLIVAN and BEDDOE families together with their descendants. They were concentrated to a greater or lesser degree in a 'triangular' area defined roughly by Horsham-Ararat-Castlemaine. (This may, of course, be crossing boundaries of this region.) There were some 34 children in the original two families, several of whom, in their turn, had large families so there should be a few around the place still. Places like Newstead also figure in their saga. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Many thanks in anticipation, Michael.
The difficulty in determining boundaries for the western district is a very old dilemma.. in the 1820's..anything south of Sydney was known as southern New Holland, c1830,'s anything west of Cape Otway , to the border ,was known as Portland Bay.. in the 40's..anything west of the township of Geelong was the western district, as far as South Australia. clerical and government administration had a terrible headache with boundary lines and names, and south australia was included for some time in the the Portland region, then the Henty's decided that they would creat a colony of their own~! it was to include part of south australia, and they wanted to rope in Warrnambool and Belfast [Port Fairy]. the latter two towns were jealous sisters of Portland and wouldn;t be in it. the country was to be called Kings co or something simperingly similar. so Beryl, you have my sympathies, it is not an easy call <s> all the best Jenny Jenny Fawcett
Thanks Jenny That sums up the dilemma pretty well! Yes, Margaret, you're in the right area. We're still scratching our heads as to the boundaries of this List. Will make an announcement soon. Dear Research Friends, Lilian Grace (nee CROW) HILTON died 1975 at Ringwood Victoria. Her father was GEORGE CROW and mother EMMA CECELIA CATTACH. Lilian Grace (nee Crow) was 84 years making her birth c1891. If this is my friend's grandmother....then her family lived mostly in Queensland. I have no HILTON marriage at this time but checking. In 1920 a Lilian Grace CROWE(CROW) married William STEPHENS In 1955 in Melbourne I have a death of Gwenyth Grace BYRT who was daughter of William STEPHENS and Lilian Grace CROW. Gwenyth was 34 which made her birth c1921 which adds up perfectly. Thanks to Julie Jackson for this information. Does anyone out there have links to any of these names ? Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thelma for my friend in Queensland. Hi Mary Yes, you have the right list, especially as many of the MCSWAINs from the 'Edward Johnstone' settled in the Western District. The descendants of John, to whom I'm connected, settled around Sandford and Casterton, the children of Norman settled around the Purnim, Warrnambool area, Donald moved to Sealake, Christy died at Euroa, and Jessie, aged 34, at Purnim. Would love to know more about Ewen (Hughie). I didn't have any record of what happened to him. I still have McSwain cousins living in Casterton. Look forward to hearing from you. I've put this reply on the list in case there are other MCSWAIN descendants lurking. Hi Listers I am trying to find links to, or other decendants of, my Maternal 2 x GGrandparents, Joseph BENNETT chr. 21 Oct. 1832, South Petherton, Somerset. Joseph married Amelia BRICE on the 21 Sept. 1854, Kingstone, Somerset. Three of Joseph and Amelia's children, Harriett, Emily and William were born in Kingstone, and the family emmigrated to Australia soon after William was born. Several other children were born after their arrival in Australia. They settled in South Australia in the Mt Gambier area for some time and then to moved to Apsley in Victoria. Their Daughter Ada Amelia BENNETT, was my Great Grandmother. If you have connections to this family on your Family Tree, I would love to hear from you. Regards Lynne Price - Victoria lprice@datafast.net.au
When I joined this list I was not sure if it was the right one for the MCSWAIN families who arrived at Portland on the Edward Johnstone, 3 Sept 1854, so I was given confidence by Beryl's mention of Portland. Now, to get on to the families - do you know there is a web site at http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/bryanfkeddy/hies-edward.html which gives an annotated passenger list of the Edward Johnstone? I would be very keen to correspond with anyone who has connections with the McSWAINs. The line my husband belongs to comes from Ewen MCSWAIN, who changed his name to Hugh SWAN when he moved to New South Wales in the 1860s. In 1869 he married Elizabeth BARNES at Mulgutherie, on the Lachlan River between Forbes and Condobolin. Their descendents have lived in the same area ever since.
