    3. Hi Des. You wrote >Portland and/or Warrnambool areas, settlers and migrants in the area, >school and church histories, shipping info', etc? >I really would love to hear back from any distant relatives, interested >residents or local history societies. > I do have info somewhere on Father Slattery, whose area of responsibility was massive, a huge slab of Victoria. But it's one thing to have a filing system, and another to remember what you filed things under. Anyone else have that trouble? Where do you live? A visit to History House would give you an absolute pig-out on local Portland history. I do have some books which I'll list in a later message. Perhaps that's something we can do on this List - mention any books we own that may have info for other members. For starters, I have the records for MORTLAKE cemetery if anyone wants information. 3. Depends on what Browser you are using If Netscape 4.x go to "Edit" in the toolbar at the top of the screen and from the Drop Down List select "Preferences" from the Drop Down Box which will display when you click on "Preferences" select "Advanced" option right down at the bottom of the list. When you click on that another box opens and you will see a set of buttons against a number of options. Select the one which you prefer and highlight the button. Exit Out and there you are. Sorry but that's about the limit of my Knowledge I dislike MS Internet Explorer and have never bothered to master it. Hopefully some other lister might be able to help. 1. [AUS-VIC-West] Bates Family
    2. Bates
    3. Hello Listers, I am researching my late husbands family who were early settlers in the Geelong area and two sons explored the Western District. The family were THOMAS BATES & MIRA [ WHITESIDE ], who arrived in VDL in 1829 with 1 daughter and 3 sons, 2 more sons were born there. They farmed until the late 1830's, when they came to Victoria at the suggestion of " Mr Batman ", and settled in the Duck Ponds [ Geelong area ] Two sons, ALFRED HENRY & JOHN EDWARD, explored the Western District and I have an old map of Victoria with " OLD BATES HOMESTEAD ", in the KALADBRO area. Would it be too much to think that this house could possibly be still in existence ? A second map I have of Duck Ponds also shows a BATES HOMESTEAD on it, a family photo shows it is make of stone, a researcher has been unable too locate this home. I have done quite a deal of research on the Bates' family, [ and a lot has been written about them in books, alas, no photo's have been printed of any of them ] which I am willing to pass onto any one who is interested, but it is those houses which intrigue me, as well as what exploration the brothers were involved in. Another son THOMAS, was a founder of the the spring works at CLIFTON SPRINGS, . Is a Lister able to help me with any information about the Bates' or their homes, and if any photo's are still in existence, please, or tell me what avenues I can research myself. I will appreciate any help a Lister may be able to give, thanking you. Patricia Bates

    1. Re: [AUS-VIC-West] LASLETT
    2. Beryl O'Gorman
    3. Hi Aileen Most of the Landings along the Glenelg were called after the people who had weekend fishing camps or shacks there. People came from as far away as Camperdown, Terang, Warrnambool, Mortlake, Merino, Casterton, Portland, so it's quite on the cards that you're right. I think the only way to prove it would be to get on to the rangers at Nelson and get them to have a look at their records. The camps were on lease to different individuals before the government withdrew the leases and pulled down the shacks, and the rangers have a list of the lessees and their contact details. Wilson Hall is named after my mob. BTW - I'm not trying to hog this list, I'm just trying to get people talking!!! Cheers Beryl O'Gorman Greensborough Victoria Australia List Admin > Does Laslett's Landing on the Glenelg River have any connection to a trucking company of I don't know when , possibly based in Horsham? called Lasletts . The Lasletts went to West Australia early 20th century. > Sorry this is a little fragmented but I am remembering vague things told to me by my Grandmother when I was quite young ! > Her aunt Hannah M. KERR married a Herbert LASLETT in W.A but they were both born VIC. > Nothing of what I have found or been told makes any sense / connection. > Hopefully > Aileen Travis >
