    3. Hi All Just reading Vicki's message I wonder, when we ask for help finding people, if we could indicate the info we already have from Victorian records? What do you think? I'm happy to follow up names from the records I have for people who may not have access to records because of distance, etc, but don't want to waste time if it's info that people already have. Vicki, is this all the info you have on your DARTs? Let us know. PS Please don't think I'm singling you out, it's something that I often wonder when people put up surnames. 3. Hello list, I thought this poem appropriate to send. It was on the Order of Service for the Ecumenical Service at the Back to Rupanyup celebrations in October 2000. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do. Regards, Ruth Mingins. Dearest Ancestor Your tombstone stands among the rest Neglected and alone. The name and date are chiselled out On polished marble stone. It reaches out to all who care It is too late to mourn. You did not know that I exist You died when I was born. Yet each of us are cells of you In flesh, in blood, in bone. Our blood contracts and beats a pulse Entirely not our own. Dear Ancestor, the place you filled So many years ago Spreads out among the ones you left Who would have loved you so. I wonder if you lived a life of love, I wonder if you knew That someday I would find this spot, And come and visit you.

    3. Hello Barry, Thank you for your email. I will try and see if I can get hold of those books you suggested - perhaps the local library may be able to get them in on loan. If not I'll try the Mitchell Library in Sydney. They may also have copies of the local church/schools histories. Anyhow I'll give them a try. Thanks again for your help. Regards, Des Evans. 2. Des Evans
    3. Hello again, and thank you, Beryl, for your quick response. I live at Kenthurst, on the outskirts of Sydney, and I am afraid I do not know of 'History House'. Is it a local Portland place? Can I get access to its resources from where I live? Also, where is Mortlake Cemetery? I have emailed the Portland Family History Group at portlandfamhist@yahoo.com for any info' they might have on Richard and Jane Dowley. My descendant tree from Richard and Jane, as it stands at the moment, is available to anyone who might want a copy. I have it on a gedcom based program called Brother's Keeper for Windows Version 5.2g and would be quite happy to email it to anyone interested (errors and omissions excepted, as they say!) Again thanks for your response, and if you do find anything in your filing on Fr Thomas Slattery in relation to Portland it would be great to find out. Kind regards, Des Evans. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. 1. Dowley's of Portland
    2. Des Evans
    3. Hello, My g-grandmother was born in Portland in 1847. Her name was Sophia Agnes DOWLEY and sponsors at her christening were Thomas Delaney and Sophia Webb. Her parents were Richard DOWLEY and Jane RICHMOND (both born in Co. Tipperary, IRL), who arrived into Port Phillip VIC on the ‘Alexander’ in 1841. Apart from Sophia, Richard and Jane had 4 other children - Margaret (b. cf 1841), Mary (b. 1843; m. Thomas Whitecroft), Richard (b. 1846), and Alice (b. 1850). Sophia Agnes was married to my g-grandfather, Russell EVANS, in Warrnambool RC church in 1871. The ceremony was performed by the RC dean, Thomas Slattery. Russell was born in Carmarthen, Wales cf 1847 and, at the time of their marriage, was a clerk. I would be very interested to hear from anyone who may be descendants of this family, or know anything about them, as I am presently doing some family research on them. Also, are there any books available with details about the history of the Portland and/or Warrnambool areas, settlers and migrants in the area, school and church histories, shipping info’, etc? I really would love to hear back from any distant relatives, interested residents or local history societies. Kind regards, Des Evans. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
