    3. March 31, 1916 Minimay Notes Very high prices were obtained for stock, farming plant and sundries at Mr KRAHNERT's clearing sale conducted by Messrs HAGELTHORN and BOLTON on Thursday week. As Mr and Mrs KRAHNERT are leaving the district this week, a farewell social will be tendered to them in the Mechanics' Hall tonight (Monday). Mr and Mrs KRAHNERT have proved themselves estimable citizens and will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends, Mr KRAHNERT being at all times willing to lend valuable assistance in all public matters particularly in connection with the local picnic races and sports meeting, and an active member of the Mechanics' Institute committee. Private James NEILL arrived here Sunday last, having received final leave prior to leaving Bendigo with reinforcements, for Broadmeadows, from which camp he expects to sail within a few weeks. Before the end of next month quite a number of local men will have joined the colours, the latest enlistments being Percy WILLIS, (previously rejected) and George COLLINS (previously rejected in New Zealand),both of whom passed the final test in Horsham last week. Those who have gone into camp at Bendigo within the last few weeks are Basil LAVERY, Minimay ; Edward and Henry OLIVER, Neuarpurr ; and Chas. CRABTREE, Booroopki ; Patrick J. and John CARRACHER, Booroopki, have passed final examination and will go into camp in about three weeks time. John McCARTHY, Neuarpurr, recently signed on, but has not yet been finally examined ; and William McDONALD, Morea, has succeeded in passing the necessary test. The list of those who failed to pass the medical test includes, Florence LOONEY, Ed and Wm. QUINTRELL, Neuarpurr, Leo LAVERY, Minimay ; and A.F. CARRACHER, Booroopki. T. HORNE, Salt Lakes ; and Jack McDONALD, Penola who were recently residents of this district, have also enlisted, the former not yet been finally examined and the later being in camp in S.A. Mrs J.T. CARRACHER, who underwent an operation for appendicitis in the Nhill hospital about a fortnight ago is progressing favourably under the care of Dr. RYAN. Mr John MULRANEY jnr. who was recently taken suddenly ill, and has been confined to his bed, is now making rapid recovery under the care of Dr. BOURKE, Goroke. 3. March 31, 1916 Regret is expressed at Commonwealth Military Headquarters at news of the death of Captain A.R.S GARTRELL, who was drowned while bathing in the surf at Manly on Sunday. Captain GARTRELL was a popular officer, and had done excellent work in the A.I.F. He was captain commanding the 3rd Signalling Troop, and having returned from active service, was recently commissioned to organise a wireless squadron, which he was to command on service abroad. Captain GARTRELL, who was on a visit to Sydney from Adelaide when his death took place, was 36 years of age, and was a nephew of Mrs J. CROSS, of Natimuk. By profession he was a printer, and his 3-colour work had received commendation in London. Daryl Crabtree Gladstone Qld www.ballaratgenealogy.org.au/goroke/

    3. My shared thoughts for the 11th November, Remembrance Day, relate to the World War 1 Avenue of Honour in Digby, south west Victoria where there is an avenue of 97 trees dedicated to the lads from the district who served. 30 did not survive, that is a very high percentage even for WW1. 2. Bryan & Melissa Hallyburton
    3. Hello Listers, I have a question to ask if anyone might know of Cliff Young's line of family? I was told that he and I share an ancestor in common by the name of Robert Young. Robert Young was born in Ireland and emigrated to Australia. He married and had a family of which a son named William Robert Young is my great great grandfather and he stayed in Geelong to raise his family. There were a couple of sons who lived and raised families in the Colac area, this is the line where Cliff Young apparently comes from. Any help to link and fill in this part of the family would be gratefully appreciated, thanking you. Melissa Hallyburton.

    3. March 21, 1919 Welcome Home To Corporal George McCLURE The Mitre Lake Hall was the scene of a large gathering of the district people on Tuesday evening last, the occasion being a welcome home to Corporal Geo. McCLURE, who has returned to Mitre Lake, after close on three years of service abroad. The hall had been nicely decorated for the occasion by Mrs R.G. McCLURE. The hall was draped with flags and bunting and the background was a large Australian flag, while spays of greenery were hung at intervals around the walls. Mr R.G. McCLURE occupied the chair. Proceedings opened with the singing of the National Anthem, during which the guest marched through the hall to the stage and took his seat, followed by three other local returned boys, Private Roy AITKEN, Chas. TAYLOR, and Harry CROSS. The Chairman said they were there that evening to welcome back to their midst Cpl. George McCLURE, after three years service abroad. He had seen and been through a lot in that time, but that he gave a good account of himself at all times, he (the speaker) felt confident. The good name the Australian soldiers had won would live for all time, they had with them on the platform three other returned boys all of whom had done their bit and he had not the slightest doubt that they would go again if necessary. He knew all present were with him in extending to Corporal McCLURE a hearty welcome back to Mitre Lake. Cr. GRANT said he was pleased to be there as a representative of the Arapiles Council. He had known the guest for a long time and had always found him a jolly good fellow. He was connected with the Lowan Football Club of which the guest was a playing member, and one who always played the straight game. When the call came to enlist George was not behind in offering his services. Nothing was too good for them to show their appreciation for what the soldiers had done for them. From their first day under fire on the 25th April, 1915, when they stormed with reckless fury those shell swept heights of Gallipoli and during the fighting in France, the Australian soldier had made a name for Australia that can never die. They were now placed in the position of being able to dictate terms to the enemy, although not very long ago some of them were beginning to think that they would have the terms dictated to them. They should not forget the men who had made it possible to attain this end. He was sure that when peace terms were fixed up it would prevent another war such as has been raging during the past four years. It was the duty of those left behind in Australia to see that the soldiers were properly cared for on their return. The Government had a big task before it in the matter of repatriation, and we should not criticise but assist. He was indeed pleased to welcome Corporal McCLURE home again and on behalf of the Councillors and rate payers of the Shire of Arapiles, he had much pleasure in presenting him with an illuminated certificate which he hoped in years to come would serve to remind their guests of the part he played in the greatest war in history. (applause) Mr H. W. WADE said he too was pleased to be there to welcome their guest as he regarded it his duty if he could be of any use. They had failed to do what they might have done at home. These lads had offered their lives for the Empire and that was the spirit they all admired. He felt that he would like that night to have had the experience of some of our returned men. Last week he attended a similar function to this one, and the guest, though three times wounded, had said that his wounds would not interfere with his ability, both morally and physically. The experience of these lads was one of the greatest any man could wish to have. Their deeds of courage and daring had staggered the world, yet these were the men who were told that they would run away when they heard a shot fired. Subsequent history had shown that the Australian soldier was equal to any emergency. They were a nation trained in the arts of peace, and not in those of warfare, and yet they rose to the occasion magnificently. He like everyone else present, was proud of what they had done, and they were glad to see Corporal McCLURE back to his native land once again. The chairman here presented Corporal McCLURE with a suitably inscribed gold medal on behalf of his many friends at Mitre Lake, and hoped that he would accept it, not for its value but as something to remind him of his friends. In response, Corporal McCLURE said that in a few short days time it would be three years since he was given a send off in the hall. He had been through a lot since then, but he would gladly go through it all again to receive another such welcome as this. He wished to thank them all sincerely for the present and also Cr. GRANT for the illuminated certificate. Three cheers were given for the guest and all present joined in singing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow." The following musical program was then gone through and was much appreciated by the audience:---. Song, Mary Ann, (encore) ; We All Go The Same Way Home, Mr Bert HAASE. Song, Home Again to Dear Old Aussy, Mr C. PUMPA. Song, Waiting, Miss A. BUNWORTH. Recitation, Mr R. WHITFIELD (encore). Song, Laddie in Khaki, Miss Ethel HATELEY. Song, God send You Back To Me, Mr A. MAYBERY. Song, Story of Two Chicks, (encore) ; Hang Out The Front Door Key, Mr John JONES. A sumptuous coffee supper was then banded round, after which the hall was cleared and dancing was indulged in by the young folk until the early hours of the morning. 1. [AUS-VIC-West] James Ford Strachan & stories.
    2. Thelma
    3. There is much I could share with you re James Ford Strachan, but there will be many others who would be more closely linked to the families. I will just make some notes to explain how there is such a twist in this long list of prominent families from the Western District. My ancestors George Bostock and Ann Cox had a daughter Mary Rachael Bostock who married 1874 in W'bool to William Anderson Adams. Mary Rachael Bostock was sister to my grandfather Robert Bostock 1850/1921. William and Mary Adams had daughter Annie Geraldine Adams who married Hugh R. McCrae, grandson of Georgiana McCrae. Hugh & Annie McCrae had a son Will Dalrymple ADAMS who married Eileen WILLAN. They then, had a daughter Noela McCrae who married Noel Strachan Shannon. He was son of EMILY RUTLEDGE and Ford Strachan Shannon. Emily from William Rutledge of course. The Strachan, Shannon etc names were all partners in the woolbroking business with Thomas Edward BOSTOCK ( 2 ) as Managing Director c.1880 in Geelong. They occupied the building now (?) Bay City Plaza (?) This Thomas Bostock (2) was a son of Thomas Bostock & Catherine Jane Mackersey who managed Boortkoi for Thomas Manifold in the Diary of Augustus Bostock. Both parents of Thomas had died while he and his siblings were still young. Thomas (2) was taken to London for his education by Edward Robe Bostock and his wife Mary Mackersey. Thomas (2) studied in Germany before returning to enter the woolbroking business in Geelong. Thomas was a Geelong Councillor 1894-1912, becoming Mayor of Geelong 1905-1908. Edward was first cousin to Augustus, George, James, Thomas, Ernest Bostock, Emily Connolly, Margaret Doveton and Eliza, wife of Alexander McLean Hunter. Mary Mackersey was sister of Catherine Jane Mackersey w/o Thomas (1) . Now back to James Ford Strachan. My interest in this name is through the purchase of the vessel Lillias by my great grandfather George Bostock. The Lillias was named after the wife of James Ford Strachan who sold it to George Bostock c.1850 (from memory). The 89 ton Schooner was launched in 1839 and was lost in a heavy gale at the mouth of the Hopkins River in 1852. If you put James Ford Strachan or any combination of names, into Google search engine, I am sure you will find much research help. For now Sincerely in Searching...
