Dear Friends, I was going through some papers today and came across letters which were sent to my grandfather from the 3 Italian POWs he had working on his farm at Pomborneit, Victoria from 1943 - 1945. These letters were written in 1946 from the POW camp at Murchison, Vic., and I was wondering whether anyone knew if there are records in existence which would tell, whether these prisoners eventually went back to Italy or stayed on here in Victoria. I would love to contact their descendants as I have some artifacts they made, and their names have been remembered with great fondness within the McGARVIE family ever since WW2. Thanks David in Ballarat
Hello Jan, Thank you for your kind offer to look up names. Would there be any PICKETTS ? Pam
Hi Joy Found 3 entries for TIPPETTS, the last one being an obituary bought a smile to my face with the wording. Kind regards Jan Marriage TIPPETT-CAMERON On the 21st June 1916 at St.Andrews Church Hamilton, Stephen TIPPETT of Coleraine, to J Margaret CAMERON of Hamilton OBITUARY Anne TIPPETT 19th September 1907 At Clear Lake, Anne, relict of the late Stephen TIPPETT, native of Truro CORNWALL: aged 79 years. A colonist for 53 years. James TIPPETT 23rd December 1920 The household of Mr James TIPPETT of McConachie Street, Coleraine, received a shock this morning when it was learned that the husband and father in the family was lying dead in bed. Mr TIPPETT was working in Silvester Oval, the weather being extremely hot, but he subsequently had his evening meal and he enjoyed the quite rest of the evening. About half past ten last night he retired to rest and eveidently passed from tempory sleep to the permanent sleep, for on being called this morning there was no response, life being extinct. Mr TIPPETT was 63 years of age and leaves a widow and grown up family. His demise is attributed to heart failure. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joy Quinn" <[email protected]> To: "janette" <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, February 20, 2004 2:08 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-VIC-West] Look ups from Coleraine Albion Newspaper > Thanks for your kind offer Jan. > > Are there any TIPPETTs mentioned? > Joy > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "janette" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Friday, February 20, 2004 10:22 AM > Subject: [AUS-VIC-West] Look ups from Coleraine Albion Newspaper > > > > I have recently acquired a copy of > > "Marriage and Obituary Extracts from the Coleraine Albion 1901-1902" > > compiled by Ken Fitzgerald and would be happy to do look ups. > > Kind Regards > > Jan Lier > > > > > > > > ==== AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT Mailing List ==== > > Port Fairy Historical Society > > http://home.vicnet.net.au/~pfhs > > > > ============================== > > Gain access to over two billion names including the new Immigration > > Collection with an Ancestry.com free trial. Hi Listers Anyone know the origin of the name "PIERACLE", the name of a station, homestead south of Casterton in the direction of Dartmoor? Regards Daryl Povey
I mistakenly said Agnes Welch's maiden name was Taylor whereas it was McLaren. I am wondering if anyone is particularly researching EMMA ASHTON who married George Welch at Portland in 1849 ? or George Welch (widower) of Coleraine who married Agnes McLaren in 1862. best wishes Jenny Fawcett

Dear Friends on Western District List, I am seeking links to a William BRIDGEMAN born in Liverpool England and migrated to Australia in early 1900's. Any assistance with links to this name would be appreciated. I am sorry about 'going slow' on diaries. It has been so hot which makes computing a little more difficult. Be back soon... Hi everyone, Land Titles Office has also moved. They are at Marland House, 570 Bourke St, Melbourne. A short walk up from Spencer Street Station. Suggest you phone before going, I was told on a recent visit that the old titles (was not given a date) are now held at PROV in North Melbourne. Cheers Tricia

Hello Helen No suggestions re your photographer but an interest in Camperdown at that time as my great-grandparents John and Hannah O'Neill and grandfather Robert O'Neill were in Camperdown then. In fact John O'Neill was the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages and so his signature is on many certificates for that time. Are any of the photos of sports teams and the like or all individual of your family? Number 99 is at the end closest to Haines Street. Actually I went and had a look on my way home tonight...........number 99 is not at the Haines St end, it is closer to Canning Street, though barely another minutes walk. Shiel Street is a lovely quiet, tree lined street with some two storey Victorian Terrace houses. Has 2 hour parking, if you intend to park near the entrance on Shiel Street. There is also a disabled bay right out front. Otherwise all day car park entrance at 112 Macauley Road. There are basic shops within 2 minutes walk, just over Canning Street on Melrose Street..... Post Office / groceries / fruit / newsagency / chemist. Other shops are at the corner of Abbotsford and Haines. From what I could see, it looks as though the PRO "may" have a sort of cafe arrangement. They certainly had tables and umbrellas at the front. Maybe give them a call before your visit 03/ 9348 5600 If you intend to use public transport, going by train to North Melbourne Station, you would have a 15 minute walk at least. I would think that tram or bus would be easier and closer. Hope the above may help some that are planning a trip to (North) Melbourne after April!! cheers, Leone

And it has just been pointed out to me that the website I gave you has not been updated since 2001, so beware. I'm guilty of not reading it thoroughly. Here's the latest on the PROV. (Hope I've got it right this time.) The National Gallery of Victoria has now relocated its staff back to the newly refurbished National Gallery on St Kilda Road. Over the next few months, Public Record Office Victoria will undertake a fit-out of the vacated floor space in the Victorian Archives building. Of most significance to researchers, the fit-out includes the new reading room. On present indications it will open in April 2004, at which time the Melbourne Archives Centre Reading Room at Casselden Place will close. For the first time since PROV was established in 1973, all of its Melbourne operations will be based in one location. The close working relationship between Public Record Office Victoria and the National Archives of Australia will continue in the new reading room. The joint PROV/NAA operation which has worked so well at the Melbourne Archives Centre will continue in the new Harry Nunn Reading Room at the Victorian Archives. The relocation of the reading room to North Melbourne will again allow on-site access to PROV record holdings. On-site access to public records will give PROV the opportunity to offer enhanced services to researchers. (Summarised from PROV Newsletter) Nowhere on the website can I find the actual North Melbourne street address but all other contacts are below.
