    3. Have no knowledge of any ships to Warrnambool direct, but at least four went direct to Belfast/Port Fairy (including "Chance" in 1857). Many more went to Portland. Apart from Geelong and Melbourne, in my family two groups who ended up in Hamilton came via Adelaide. > >

    3. Hello Malcolm and others My Harvey family went from UK (Cornwall) on the Clara and disembarked at Belfast (Port Fairy) in Dec 1854. This seemed to be a regular place for disembarking along with Portland at that time. I was in Port Fairy at the weekend and would recommend the local Historical Society if you need to research early residents of the area. The fee is $25 and the researchers have the local knowledge, experience and original resources. The local cemetery is in good condition and I was able to easily get photographs of the gravestone for my great grandparents and great uncle. Apart from that there are still original buildings that give one a taste of earlier times and it is a great place to spend a few days delving in the past and walking the tracks and paths perhaps used by our ancestors. To top it off there is plenty of great accommodation and numerous upmarket eating places to make it a memorable time. Cheers Beth in Melbourne

Were there any ships carrying passengers from the UK that offloaded passengers directly at Warrnambool (or a port nearby) in either about 1853 or about 1870? I'm not after passenger lists or ship's names (but any would be welcome :-) ), just seeing if my theory about certain ancestors arriving directly in Warrnambool from England around those dates is plausible. If there weren't any "direct" routes, where would a settler (in one case of mine a young lady & her grandmother from Cornwall) most likely disembark to get to Warrnambool? Hello Helen & List I was on duty at Camperdown (Historical Society Inc) Museum yesterday (tuesday) & had a look through photographs & found a photo with 'Walter Sheridan Photographer' studio in the background. The time frame 1910-14 looks about right as the photograph is of a lady (Jemma Pratt) in a carriage in front of the studio. Miss Pratt operated a Private hospital in Camperdown. Walter Sheridan, studio was in Church St Camperdown and the building still stands (somewhat changed). Camperdown Museum holds a wonderfull collection of old photohraphs of the district & it's people. 3. Hello Listers, Well, that is the truth...The Jetty was on Lady Bay and I have a photo of the original STEAM PACKET HOTEL on my wall, above my computer. This building was the original and first bond store of Manifold & Bostock on Lady Bay, when Warrnambool was declared a port. The old bond store was extended to serve many purposes at a later time, one being the Steam Packet Hotel, which incorporated the old bond store, while another was the Lady Bay Hotel. While visiting a few years ago, we were shown some of the walls, that were from the original bond store. We believe the building is now demolished. After the bond store moved to cnr.Timor and Leibig Streets c.1857, many businesses worked in the old store which was incorporated in the new ventures. This shows that the marriage could have taken place in the Steam Packet Hotel...most probably...but I don't have dates to hand just now.. I have dates in file. We have just suffered some breakdown on XP tonight and I am working in Windows '98 for a change. What a pain.....Just as well Matthew can do this, as I would be lost... There is much more I can share with you regarding these early days on Lady Bay and bond stores. However, for now, I must try and get my files back.... Sincerely Thelma (Bostock) Birrell. > However I've just looked up the Warrnambool rate books for the 1870s and I > see that there was an area of town called "Jetty Allotments". 3. Hi all I have a marriage certificate of George SHAKESPEARE and Julia Belinda COOK from 1870 which gives the location of the marriage as "the residence of the groom, Jetty " and I've always assumed that "Jetty" was the name of a house. However I've just looked up the Warrnambool rate books for the 1870s and I see that there was an area of town called "Jetty Allotments". Can anyone confirm my current assumption that "Jetty" was (maybe is) a locality in Warrnambool? George Shakespeare ran the Steam Packet Hotel, which I'm told was on the site of the present Lady Bay Hotel. Would the LBH be at "Jetty" ? Regards Malcolm Ward [email protected] Sydney, Australia
