    3. Yes Richard They were our neighbours and among my Mum and Dad's best friends. Norma and Neville, the 2 youngest, were our age and we played together all the time. I often wonder what became of them. I could show you the exact spot where Rup was killed. It was a notorious corner at Noorat, just out of Terang. That was an absolute tragedy. Could also show you the house in Mortlake where they lived. And I noticed last time I put flowers on Mum and Dad's grave that someone has been back and put a headstone on the grave after all these years. One of the daughters, Thelma (?) lived in the house in the Tower Hill Cemetery for some years. But they left the town when we were still young and we never heard any more. There was a big family. You know, this is really weird, because I was only thinking about Norma and Neville in the last few days. They had an aunt in Melbourne who used to send them things, and often Mum would give Mrs Hutchings money and ask if the aunt could get one for us too. The memory that stands out was the first edition of "Snugglepot and Cuddlepie" by Mae Gibbs, which she sent us, and which I still have. And lots of other mischief stuff like stealing Dad's cigarette papers and smoking the horsehair from the old sofa that someone had dumped in the paddock. It's a wonder that didn't kill us isn't it? I didn't know the mother's name, as our mothers always called each other 'Mrs' in those days, but she was one of those lovely soft, cuddly mothers. Now what is your connection with the family? 3. Many many thanks to all who replied. Most of the replies mentioned the epidemic of flu brought back to Australia by returning troops from WW1. A number of suggestions were made to check the local newspapers of the time for illness outbreaks. So it looks like I will be making another trip into the SLV for continuing research. Once again many thanks to Tom, Beryl, Kerrie, Daryl and Robyn. Regards Tricia

    3. Hi Tricia, There was a huge worldwide pandemic of influenza in 1918-19 which killed millions of people, immediately on top of WW1. Measles would also have been very common in those days, given that there was no vaccination available. Meningitis can occur after both. My son had meningitis (inflamation of the meninges sp?)as an after effect of influenza two years running - a very sick little boy, although it's no where near as critical a condition as bacterial meningitis. 3. G'day Tricia and All, It would be very likely that an epidemic did occur as the returning troops from WW1 brought many such diseases back with them. One such nasty one was a severe flu epidemic which took the lives of many. The newspapers of the day sometimes reported on such things, this is where I would start to look for any clues. Around 1918 something happened to her, one story handed down, was that she caught measles, which developed into meningitis, leaving her mentally handicapped. There were other stories describing how she became handicapped. Would anyone know whether there was an epidemic of measles around the 1917, 1918, 1919 period, in the Camperdown district? 3. Hi Peter, "Watch Hill" still exists! Altho, my husband says he would call it more Cundare than Irrewarra. Bluestone home at the end of a very long drive. Property runs sheep. No idea who the present owners are. I'm not 100% sure, but I think that the Long or Gibson family had an association with this property, perhaps around 1900? Cheers, Andrea. 3. Hi Peter, The original pastoral run was Irrewarra (aka Korangamite). It was 68,280 acres. In November 1850 Irrewarra was subdivided into 3 pastoral runs - Irrewarra, Corangamite, and Watch Hill. Maps of Pastoral Runs are available in lots of places - Billis & Kenyons "Pastoral Pioneers of Port Phillip" and Spreadborough & Anderson's "Victoria Squatters" are just two books that include all these details and maps. 3. September 5, 1919 PEACE LOAN Aeroplane Tour (No 2) The Aeroplane used in connection with the Peace Loan will leave Horsham at 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 6th. Arriving at Natimuk at 4.15. Where it will Loop the Loop over the Post Office, perform other spectacular turns and drop Loan Leaflets. Captn. A.T. COLE M.C. D.F.C., will pilot the aeroplane. Everybody should be present. At Tuesdays meeting of the Arapiles Shire Council Cr SCOTT said they should endeavour to arrange for the aeroplane to land at Natimuk. Cr GRANT said they would not get the benefit from the visit unless the aeroplane landed for half an hour. He moved that the secretary endeavour to secure a landing in or near Natimuk. Seconded by Cr SUDHOLZ and carried. Mr W. SINCLAIR, in accordance with the councils resolution, wired the Central Peace Loan Committee, asking that the landing of the aeroplane be arranged for at Natimuk. Yesterday he received the following reply. "Aeroplane will give a flying exhibition at Natimuk on Saturday at 4 p.m., and ex-Senator St. LEDGER will give a public address and sell bonds." The reply appears to us evasive. Mr SINCLAIR also communicated with Mr Arthur RODGERS, asking him to arrange a landing. Yesterday afternoon Mr SINCLAIR received the following wire from Mr RODGERS:-- "Have seen authorities and urged Natimuk's claims. Possible plane will land, depends nature of country," It now rests with Natimuk's people to pick out a suitable site. Daryl Crabtree Gladstone Qld www.ballaratgenealogy.org.au/goroke/ Note! Did it land? Are there any photos out there of this event in Natimuk's past? Cheers, Daryl
