    1. [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] Kelly's 10 Favourite Genealogy Things
    2. Deb Guildner
    3. Hi My 10 favourite genealogy things: 1. A software package to record all the bits and pieces (I have piles of paper in my living room from when I started and I just can't seem to keep it neat.) It will also help me publish a small book of my findings for our family Christmas get together, in seconds. 2. Those websites that help me to find lost cousins I didn't know I had! 3. My free genealogy website to upload my GEDCOM to - and share my latest findings with those lost cousins that I have met! 4. Being a member of the free LinX Family History Society - Martin has been very helpful in expanding my tree! 5. My PDA/PPC and free family tree software - so I can take my tree with me everywhere and it fits in the palm of my hand. 6. My digital camera - so I can share good quality photos of family with others! 7. My scanner - so I can scan my certificates from the GRO - and store them on my family tree software package. 8. Those free sites - FreeBMD, FreeReg, FreeCen, OPC's, Parish the thought, a wealth of information for nought! 9. Bad weather - makes a good excuse for sitting at the computer all day. 10. Acid free archival stationary - for storing all the stuff that only comes in paper (mainly GRO certificates and photos). Cheers, Kelly ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ENG-LINCSGEN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Another piece of advice is talk to your parents about their family photos. Dont put it off. lve just asked mum if we could go through all the ones l knew she had stored in a box, only to be told she had thown them all out, well most of them any way. She didnt think any one would want them, they are only old photos to her, but to me a part they were part of the past and a lot more. But hey, what could l say shes my mum. >From: "Deb Guildner" <bocor@bigbutton.com.au> >Reply-To: aus-vic-western-district@rootsweb.com >To: <aus-vic-western-district@rootsweb.com>, <aus-sag@rootsweb.com> >Subject: [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] Good advice for family historians >Date: Sat, 2 Dec 2006 08:13:59 +1030 > >If I had to give one piece of advice to people starting out in their family >tree, it would be to be organised from the beginning! 1. Re: [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] Good advice for family historians
    2. Julie M Hopper
    3. Vicki, I could not agree more with your advice re keeping records. When I first started family history research about nine years ago, I didn't have any computer programmes to use, so I started by setting up a 'steam' filing system. I just had to, as the notes and other papers that my mother left when she died were in a state of total chaos. I had to sort things out so that I had some idea of what was actually there! My mother's idea of filing was to put things into old handbags and shoeboxes and shove them away in the back of the wardrobe. I guess I should count myself lucky that she even did that much... The whole process of filing and sorting is tedious, I grant you, but making the effort does pay off in the long run. Your precious items are stored safely, and a workable filing system means you save time when you want to look up some information. Two things I have learned: 1. No matter how much information you have now, you will accumulate more - never underestimate how much more. 2. If you find out something about an ancestor, write it down, make a note of where you found it, and when - never overestimate your memory. Good luck with the organising, but fear not, it does get easier as you plug away at it - one thing you can do is start by organising everything broadly according to surnames, starting with the earliest names you have, and listing marriages under your family surname. Then you can refine the list according to generations, and go from there. Some people say you should start with yourself and work backwards, but I have found that the reverse order worked best for me. My suggestion would be to sort out as much of this stuff as you can before you attempt to put it into your software. Cheers Julie.

    3. If I had to give one piece of advice to people starting out in their family tree, it would be to be organised from the beginning! I have just spent the entire evening beginning to put nearly 20 years of research into my new software, which I think will take months to do. Keep a good record of where each source comes from, a record of those searches that didn't yield a result (to save you doing it again) and set up a filing system from the outset, both for research notes and sources, and also a summary of information for each person, either on software or on paper. I really wish that someone had given me this advice! Vicki

    3. Thanks everyone for your input. Not being familiar with Western Victoria I didn't know if I was looking at hours or days using a horse and cart. Still none the wiser why they decided to elope - he was 47 and she was 33. Baby number 1 didn't arrive for another ten months (aren't we awful?). The Rev Beamish married Mary's sister two months previously in Mortlake, so you would think they would have a double-wedding or at least book him in for his next visit. Hmm, if I could have just five minutes with the ancestors, the things I would like to ask . . . Thanks again, Trish

    3. Hi Trish Well it took a full hour at 40-50 mph back in the late forties, early fifties, so I guess you'd be looking at at least 3 given the roads of the time. The distance was 30 miles (whatever that is now in kms). The ministers at that time administered HUGE areas, so perhaps there was some haste required? Could have been a dozen reasons - religion, family disapproval, etc. Cheers Beryl Beryl O'Gorman Greensborough Victoria Australia ----- Original Message ----- From: "tsymonds" <psym8950@bigpond.net.au> To: <aus-vic-western-district@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 30, 2006 2:12 PM Subject: [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] Mortlake to Warrnambool by horse and cart > Can anyone give me an idea of how long it would take to journey from Mortlake to Warrnambool > by horse and cart in 1858 and why would someone choose to elope at that time? It took me 3 years of lobbying to get Deakin to put the site back on again, at least these problems can be worked around. I think it is worth getting the various historical societies who are interested to have a chat with Arts at Deakin to see if the project can be revived with corrections and additions from other Honour Rolls & Memorials in the area. Perhaps there are many of you who could raise this as a discussion issue with your local group? Casterton & Hamilton Societies are already talking! Responses ?
