    1. [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] Lawrence LAMBERT & Mary BISHOP - Nurrabeil
    2. Hi Folks, Does anyone own Lawrence Lambert (cir 1832-1897) son of Robert LAMBERT & Amelia OAKUM. Lawrence is buried with his wife Mary (nee Bishop) at Nurrabeil. If anyone is researching this family I'd really like to know more details about the father Robert LAMBERT and what children are stated on his death cert. I'm also interested in the states Robert lived in. Jenny ________________________________________________________________________ Check out the new AOL. 3. Hello again Ron, Yes it is a bit grisly, isn't it? I'm thinking seriously of sending for the certificate in question just to satisfy my (perhaps morbid) curiosity as to what the actual wording is. I don't know with this relative what the circumstances were, so I guess that this would be the only way to find out. Needless to say, the person was never discussed in the family, and I found him purely by chance when looking through Digger for something else altogether. Of course in 1900 hanging offences were quite numerous, but even so his death may have been from natural causes. I take your point that strictly speaking one doesn't actually die by hanging, but since it is the hanging which causes the broken spinal cord, asphyxiation, etc. then shouldn't it say so on the certificate? I don't know - perhaps there are privacy issues or something of the sort here for the immediate family, so maybe that's why the actual event, the 'real' cause of the person's death, is likely to be noted only in the Court or Prison records. Presumably these records would have restricted access, if any at all. On a more cheerful note, may I wish you a happy New Year and lots of good breakthroughs in your research in 2007. Regards and all the best for now, Julie. -----Original Message----- From: aus-vic-western-district-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-vic-western-district-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Ron Philllips Sent: Tuesday, 2 January 2007 8:43 PM To: aus-vic-western-district@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] Fw: Gaol SNIP

    3. Hi Julie I doubt it would have been actually stated as "Death by hanging" on the death certificate. I would imagine the cause of death would show as perhaps "death by asphyxiation" or death by the medical equivalent for a broken neck or some such medical description of the injury sustained from the actual hanging. Funny enough you don't actually die by hanging. Death comes as a consequence of the injuries caused by the way in which the hanging affects the human body - primarily a broken neck and severed spinal cord - well hopefully that is. If the rope is not properly positioned the neck doesn't break and then death is by asphyxiation and that is not a nice way to go! Only the Court and Prison Records would record the event itself ie the actual hanging. Lovely subjects we Genies get involved in! 3. Thanks Ron, I just wondered if a prisoner who had been sentenced to death by hanging would have had that fact only recorded somewhere other than in the BDM register - perhaps in a separate police file. If not, as you suggest, then (in the case I was interested in) a recording of 'East Melbourne Gaol' as the place of the person's death could have meant death by hanging, or death by natural causes. 3. Greetings listers, I have found an entry on Digger for a family member, giving "Melb E Gaol" as the place for a death which occurred in 1904. I was curious about this, and when I looked further, I found that this same place was given as the place of death for about 16 other people between about 1902 and 1904. Where was this gaol, and what is known about it? I assume it wasn't Pentridge. Cheers Julie H.

I am currently researching two of our ex boys who migrated to Australia in the late 1800s early 1900s. Both served with The Australian army in WW1 and both were killed in action. It was the other one, James Toohey, that joined in 1916. He was killed in Flanders in 1917. 1. [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] Footy grounds with memorials to soldiers
    2. Hi Listers, I'm assisting on a project that intends to write about communities and the ways they supported their football clubs. One interesting thing we are chasing is that some communities built grandstands (or pavilions) in honour of their war volunteers (any war will do but particularly World War One). We have found the Soldiers & Sailors pavilion at Port Fairy, the soldiers reserve & pavilion in Warracknabeal & a memorial grandstand at Port Pirie. Do listers know of any other such memorials? We are not interested in your typical granite memorial with names even if it is within a football ground or showground. We're really looking for a way that comunity facilities were enhanced with the use of money raised in honour of war volunteers. Of course there are also bandstands dedicated to band members who enlisted but the focus is the development of country football. Any help greatly appreciated. best wishes, Jenny Coates Melbourne's Unemployed in the 1890s http://home.primusonline.com.au/jennyc/Melbourne/ ________________________________________________________________________ Check out the new AOL. 3. Thanks Daryl. It's great to see that Vern is getting into exhibiton mode with a vengeance next year. Has he finally retired? Speaking of which, I think I'll have to retire to Casterton so I can get in on the school site tours and check out the resources. 3. Re travel to W'bool by horse and cart. I would just like to say that a decent pony and trap may have done the journey, on a good road, in 3 hours, but a horse and cart was terribly slow and the roads may have been just goat tracks in 1858 - especially if it was a wet season! Cheers Philippa
