Regards Andrew
Hi Trish! Thanks for telling us about this montage. I am interested in CLARK/E and TAYLOR. I realise these are common names, but hopefully there wouldn't bee too many on just one article ??? I think Edmund or Edward was the CLARK/E, but don't have the details with me at present. The TAYLOR is likely to have DRAYTON as a middle name, and one was William, and I can't remember the other one's first name. I was hoping my elusive James BAILEY (or BRENTNALL) may have been mentioned, but not one of either name. ;-( If you would be kind enough to look, thank you very much, for offering. Cheers, Debbie. -----Original Message----- From: aus-vic-western-district-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-vic-western-district-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of tsymonds Sent: Friday, 26 January 2007 7:08 AM To: aus-vic-western-district@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] PHOTOGRAPHS OF PIONEERS Hi all, This was unknown by me until a few weeks ago, so I thought I would post the information here in case anyone else is unaware of this wonderful piece of Victorian history that may help their research; this may be the only photograph of an ancestor of yours that exists -

Hi all, This was unknown by me until a few weeks ago, so I thought I would post the information here in case anyone else is unaware of this wonderful piece of Victorian history that may help their research; this may be the only photograph of an ancestor of yours that exists - THOMAS FOSTER CHUCK, photographer, (born England) arrived in Melbourne in 1863. He opened photographic studies in Melbourne, Daylesford, St Kilda and Ballarat. Chuck set about photographing the first explorers, pioneers and settlers who were still alive around 1864. When he completed his task of photographing as many of the pioneers as he could find, the result became a huge mosaic standing nearly two metres tall and containing over 1,000 portraits. It is stored in the basement of the State Library of Victoria and there is a quarter-size copy in the National Library in Canberra. No women are acknowledged as pioneers. The National Library only sells photographs of the whole montage; SLV used to sell individuals if you provided the relevant number, but I haven't received confirmation from them that they still do so or if they are now only selling the complete montage. If you would like to see his finished montage click on the link:- http://nla.gov.au/nla.pic-an5770709 All the portraits he used in the montage were numbered and identified. I have a copy of the Key identifying all the photographs. If anyone would like me to look up a name for them I am happy to do so. The list of surnames is:- A'BECKETT, ADDISON, AITCHESON, AIKEN, AITKEN, ALEXANDER, ALLAN, ALLEE, ALSTON, AMBROSE, ANDERSON, ANKETELL, ARCHER, AMSTRONG, ASHLEY, ASHTON, AZZOPARDI, BAILLIE, BAIRD, BAKER, BALLINGALL, BARBER, BARKER, BARLING, BARR, BARRETT, BARRY, BARWICK, BATEY, BATHE, BATTRICK, BAYNE, BAYNTON, BAXTER, BEAR, BEILBY, BELCHER, BELL, BENJAMIN, BENNETT, BERSHAW, BEURLEWSE, BLACK, BLAND, BOOTH, BORN, BOYD, BRANDT, BROCK, BROUGHAM, BROWN, BRUCE, BUCKLAND, BUDDS, BUDGE, BURGESS, BURNS, BURRALL, BUTCHART, CAMPBELL, CAPPER, CARMICHAEL, CARNE, CARSON, CASHMORE, CASSELL, CAULFIELD, CHAINNEY, CHISHOLM, CHRISTIE, CLARK, CLARKE, CLAY, CLINTON, CLOW, CLUTTERBUCK, COBHAM, COCHRAN, COCHRANE, COLE, COLEMAN, COLGIN, COLT, COOKE, COOPER, COPPIN, CORNEY, COTTRELL, COSGRAVE, COWIE, CRAVEN, CRESWICK, CROOK, CROPPER, CROWLEY, CUNNINGHAM, CURDIE, CURR, CURRIE, CURTAIN, DALL, DALLIMORE, DALY, DAMYOU, DAVIDSON, DAVIS, DAWSON, DEGRAVES, DENBY, DENNYS, DICKSON, DINWOODIE, DISHER, DOBSON, DODS, DONALD, DOOLY, DOUGHARTY, DOUGLASS, DOWLING, DREDGE, DUNCAN, DUNLOP, DUNN, EASY, EBDEN, EDDY, EDGAR, EGAN, ELLERMAN, ELLERY, ELLIOT, EMERSON, EMPSON, EVANS, FAIRBAIRN, FAIRCHILD, FARIE, FAWKNER, FFLEAN, FINLAYSON, FITZGERALD, FORMAN, FOSTER, FOWLER, FOXTON, FRASER, FRAZELLE, FRENCHMAN, FROST, FULTON, FURGUSON, FURLONG, FYANS, GATEHOUSE, GEMMELL, GERAGHTY, GERRAND, GILL, GILLETT, GLASS, GODBER, GODFREY, GOLDSBROUGH, GOODMAN, GORDON, GOVETT, GRAHAM, GRANT, GRAY, GREEN, GREENE, GREEVES, GREY, GRICE, GROVE, GURNER, GUTHBRIDGE, GWAITHIN, GWYNNE, HAILES, HAINES, HALFPENNY, HALL, HAM, HAMILTON, HAMMOND, HARRIS, HARRISON, HART, HASKELL, HASLAM, HATCH, HAWTHORNE, HAYBALL, HAYES, HEALES, HENTY, HERVEY, HETHERINGTON, HIGGINS, HIGHETT, HILL, HINDS, HINKINS, HOBSON, HODDLE, HODGKINSON, HODGSON, HOFFMAN, HOGG, HOLMES, HOLT, HOOD, HORN, HOVELL, HOWARD, HOWATT, HOWEY, HOWITT, HUDDART, HUGHES, HULL, HUME, HUNTER, HURLSTONE, HURST, HUTTON, INGLIS, JACKSON, JAGO, JAMES, JEFFRY, JENNINGS, JERROME, JOHNSON, JOHNSTON, JONAS, JUKES, KENNEDY, KENNON, KER, KERR, KESTERTON, KEYS, KIDD, KING, KIRK, KISSOCK, KNIGHT, KYTE, LAIDLAW, LANG, LANGDON, LANGHORN, LANGHORNE, LA TROBE, LAWFORD, LAWRENCE, LEIGH, LE SOEUF, LEVIEN, LEWIS, LINCOLNE, LLOYD, LOCK, LOCKE, LOCKLEY, LONSDALE, LOVE, LYNOTT, McARTHUR, McCALLUM, McCAW, McCLAUREN, McCLEAN, McCLEOD, McCOMBIE, McCRAE, McDONALD, McDONNELL, McEWAN, McFARLAND, McGILL, McGREGOR, McGUIRE, McKELLAR, McKENZIE, McKINNON, McLACHLAN, McLAUGHLIN, McLAURIN, McMILLAN, McMAIN, McMERTRIE, McNICHOL, McNAY, McPHERSON, MACARTHUR, MACARTNEY, MACDONALD, MACGREGOR, MACK, MACKENZIE, MACNIGHT, MACPHERSON, MACREDIE, MAIR, MALLON, MANTON, MANIFOLD, MARRIS, MARLOW, MARSDEN, MARTIN, MASON, MASSIE, MATHESON, MATHEWS, MATSON, MAWBEY, MENZIES, MERCUTT, MESSENGER, MICHAL, MICHEL, MILES, MILLER, MITCHELL, MOFFATT, MOLLISON, MONAHAN, MONGER, MONTGOMERIE, MOODY, MOONE, MOOR, MOORE, MORGAN, MORRELL, MORRISON, MORROW, MORRIS, MORTIMER, MORTON, MOSS, MOWATT, MULLAN, MURCHISON, MURISON, MURPHY, MURRAY, MUST, NAPIER, NELSON, NICHOLSON, NIMMO, NIXON, NOLAN, NORTHCOTE, NORTON, O'BRIAN, O'BRIEN, O'FARRELL, OGILVY, OLIVER, ORR, OSBOURN, O'SHANASSY, O'SHEA, OVERTON, PALMER, PARK, PARKER, PASSMORE, PATERSON, PATTERSON, PEDDLE, PENDER, PERREGALLI, PERRY, PEERS, PHILLIPS, PINKERTON, PINNOCK, POHLMAN, POLLARD, POPE, PORTER, POWELL, POWLETT, PURBRICK, PURCELLE, QUARTERMAN, RAE, RANKIN, RAVEN, REEVES, REID, RICHARDSON, RICKETT, RICKETTS, ROBBINS, ROBERTS, ROBERTSON, ROBINSON, RONALD, RONEY, ROONEY, ROSS, ROSTRON, ROWE, ROWED, ROWLEY, RUCKER, RUFFEY, RUSDEN, RUSSELL, RUTHERFORD, RUTLEDGE, RYAN, SAVAGE, SCOTT, SELBY, SHADFORTH, SHARP, SHAW, SHEPPARD, SHERIDAN, SHREWBRIDGE, SIDEBOTTOM, SIEVEWRIGHT, SIMEON, SIMPSON, SINCLAIR, SKEENE, SKENE, SLADEN, SLEIGHT, SLOMAN, SMITH, SNODGRASS, SOUTH, SPARROW, STANBRIDGE, STANWAY, STAUGHTON, STAWELL, STEWART, STOKE, STONE, STEPHENSON, STREET, STRODE, STURT, SUGDEN, SUMNER, SUTCLIFFE, SUTHERLAND, SWANSON, SWORDS, SYNOT, TAYLOR, THOM, THOMAS, THOMPSON, THOMSON, THORNTON, THWAITES, TOBY, TOLMIE, TOLSON, TRACEY, TRANGMAR, TREACEY, TROTMAN, TUCKETT, TUCKFIELD, TURNBULL, TURNER, UMPHELBY, URQUART, URQUHART, VAUGHAN, VERNON, VINGE, WALKER, WALL, WALLACE, WALSH, WARMAN, WATT, WATTON, WEBB, WEDGE, WERE, WEST, WESTGARTH, WHARMBY, WHELAN, WHITBY, WHITE, WIGHT, WILMOT, WILKIE, WILKINSON, WILLIAMS, WILLIAMSON, WILLS, WILSON, WILTON, WINTER, WINTLE, WISE, WOOLLEY Cheers, Trish.

Learned of this online narrated history from the Limerick list, but considering the number of Irish who emigrated to the regions of other lists of which I'm a member, thought this information resource was worth sharing. If you go to URL _http://www.rte.ie/radio1/famineechoes/1115374.html_ (http://www.rte.ie/radio1/famineechoes/1115374.html) ( _http://www.rte.ie.radio1/famineechoes/1115374.html_ (http://www.rte.ie.radio1/famineechoes/1115374.html) ) you can listen to a series of broadcasts that were re-aired on Irish radio starting December 9, 2006. It is a poignant history composed of narratives provided by locals recounting what they heard from their relatives who lived through the famine period -- an incredibly detailed description of life in those times -- e.g. how they lived, what they ate, how they farmed, etc.. Am sending to Australia Victoria Goldfields and Western District lists, the Cook County and Irish in Chicago lists, the Albany, NY list and the Monaghan list, Please feel free to forward to other lists/contacts who might have interest. Thanks Daryl, I think on reflection it is logical in this case that the person was the owner and/or driver of a carriage or fleet of carriages - perhaps as a sort of forebear to a modern taxi service. Cheers, your input was appreciated. Greetings listers, Here is an odd one - I was looking at a listing from the 1901 UK census and I found for a person born in 1834 in the county of Berkshire, the occupation was given as 'Fly Proprietor.' Anyone with any idea as to what this could be? Could it be 'Fly' as in trout fishing perhaps, or 'Fly' as in a vehicle for conveying passengers, or...? Julie H.
