Beryl, Whilst on the McLEAN subject, I was researching one of my family ancestors. Her name was Maria KILLEEN. When Maria arrived, c. 1855, she was illiterate. When she married at Williamstown, presumably the Priest at her wedding wrote her name as she pronounced it, hence her name appeared on her Wedding Certificate as Maria CLAYNE to Samuel SMITH. When her first 2 children were born, her Maiden Name was recorded as McLEAN. On the baptism of her 3rd child, her Maiden Name was given as KILLEEN, which occurred after her younger sister arrived.
