Forwarded for your information. Beryl O'Gorman Greensborough Victoria Australia List Admin ----- Original Message ----- From: "GSV" <gsv@gsv.org.au> Sent: Wednesday, June 13, 2001 8:22 AM Subject: [VICGENGP] SS Great Britain Hello everyone, I am forwarding this letter for those interested in the SS Great Britain. Dear Sir/Madam My name is Baz Kershaw, and I am the Professor of Drama at the University of Bristol, England. During the past 18 months I have been involved with the SS Great Britain project. In May, 2000 I produced The Iron Ship, a large-scale show around and on the ship with over 80 performers. The production used a mixture of documentary history and fantasy to present ideas and questions about the ship past and present. The show was very successful in raising public interest in the ship and exploring imaginative ways to interpret it. Now I am planning another, smaller-scale production on the SS Great Britain for September of this year. This will involve just one female performer and will run for five days non-stop during the ship's opening hours. The theme of this show will be the different ways through which we remember the past. To research for the show I have been invited to Australia by the University of Newcastle, NSW between July 8 and August 26. I will be spending some of this time in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane with the aim of meeting descendants of passengers of the ship's voyages from 1852-1876. I am interested in collecting any stories that have been passed down through the generations, especially about the experiences of passengers after they arrived in Australia. The purpose of my project is to contribute to the SS Great Britain's work in designing a new museum exhibition and new ways for visitors to experience the ship. The ship has been successful in its bid for a large Lottery grant (though £3million still needs to be raised in matching funds) which will enable great improvements in the way it is presented to the public. We would dearly love to trace living families descended from the nineteenth century passengers, and to record stories for possible inclusion in the planned new museum. I would really appreciate your help in finding names, addresses, telephone numbers, etc. of relevant families so that I can contact them and seek contributions of stories. I will personally not be able to travel far from the cities, but I will be equipped to record stories from anyone I cannot meet by telephone. I am afraid I am not able offer any financial incentive. Any responses before July 5 should be direct to me via e-mail: baz.kershaw@bristol.ac.uk or fax: 0044 117 928 7832 or post: 71 Cotham Brow, Bristol BS6 6AW, UK. After that I can be contacted in Australia at: e-mail: as above phone 1: 02 4951 5001 (message) phone 2: 02 4921 5006 (direct) post: Department of Drama, The University of Newcastle, Callaghan NSW 2308 I do hope that you are able to assist, and thank you in advance for your efforts. Firstly, an apology for cross-posting - I need to get as wide a coverage as possible. <g> For the purposes of a proposed family reunion at Easter next year, I am trying to trace the descendants of Thomas Joseph CLUES and Maria Ann SMITH - a virtually 'lost' branch of my wife's family. Known events for the family include 3 marriages - Margaret Elsie CLUES married Charles BLYTH in 1903, probably at Sale. She died at Fitzroy in 1949 but have yet to positively identify his death. Two known children of this family are Charles Albert John, b. Sale 1903 and Keith Ernest, also b. Sale, 1905; Keith died at Collingwood in 1958. Myrtle Ida CLUES married William Claud(e) ATKIN in 1911, also probably at Sale. She died in 1974, according to the indexes, at 'Macl' - which could probably be Macleod, I guess. I have yet to locate his death record. Two known children of this marriage were William Harold, b. Castlemaine 1912 and Leslie Lydia, also b. Castlemaine, 1913. Oliver Duncan CLUES married Elsie May MEWS in 1918, location unknown at this stage. Oliver died at Lilydale in 1949. Elsie died at Collingwood in 1959. Nothing known about children of this marriage. Thomas Joseph and Maria had 3 other children, Charles Edward, b. 1882 at Sale, Walter Claud(e), b. Sale 1884, and Jack, b. 1888 at Rosedale. So far have been unable to find any trace of these three other than their birth records. Any help that can be offered would be appreciated - and acknowledged. Hi there fellow lsiters, Sorry for the cross listing of this message to those on the other lists. I am trying to find out what it means when at the end of the entry in the Inquest index on cd it says Crown Law and has a number after it.. The entry I refer to is as follows: Ackland, Sarah, 1924, 2383, Senile decay, 1924-12-26, Crown law 25825. None of the other entries I was looking at had anything like that in the listing. This is my great great grandmothers inquest details and I wonder if that means there is some sort of paperwork other than the general inquest papers. I only saw this yesterday and don't know where to go from here to find out what it means. Thanks in advance from Diana in Perth WA

I am hoping someone can help me find my great great grandfather. His name is George Cook (or sometimes spelt Cooke). He was born in 1837 (place unknown). He arrived in Nelson, New Zealand in 1864 and married a local woman, Susan Eliza Matthews in July 1866. By trade he is a Butcher and appears to open a shop, produce several children, and then disappear by the late 1880's. His wife dies in 1920 and is described as a widow. I cannot find George's death on the New Zealand Death indexs and wondered if perhaps he had died in Australia. Is there some kind person who could check their Australian Birth indexs for a George Cook/Cooke born in 1837, and the same dying between 1885 and 1920. Many thanks - I appreciate this may not be strictly "Goldfields" related but did not want to join another mailing list for one simple question! Beth New Zealand
