    3. Hi Dean The reason why you couldn't find Lucy Kent Smith was because she was Lucy Kent Sturtzel at the time of her death. Must have snuck a marriage in there somewhere that you didn't know about. Seems she had a driver who was swilling his beer as he drove and crashed into a tree causing her to be thrown from the car and land on her head. He went for manslaughter. They found the beer jar hidden in the thistles after investigation. I have quite a comprehensive write up from the Dimboola Chronicle of Jan 5th 1922. If you want to send your address to me at beryl@wordweavers.net I'll post it to you. 3. Greetings from the "Coral Sea Coast" (Lat 17.5s Long 146.4e) Hi to All, I seek information on the death of one Lucy Kent SMITH on 29 December 1921 at Dimboola. Lucy was a well-known Wimmera nurse and midwife and was the widow of my wife's paternal grand uncle, Duncan SMITH sometime of Jeparit. She died as a result of a fall from a car and it is said that a detective was brought from Melbourne to investigate and that an inquest was held on 30th and 31st December 1921. There is no record of the inquest on the Victorian Inquest CD. If SKS is close enough to have access to the archival records of the local Dimboola newspaper or to inquest records at the local courthouse I would appreciate any information that can be gleaned. And may that which you seek be found Dean Newman, North Queensland Australia. "As time goes by" kenyon@znet.net.au "Old Deans never die - they just lose their faculties"

    2. Dean Martin Rees NEWMAN
    3. Greetings from the "Coral Sea Coast" (Lat 17.5s Long 146.4e) Hi to all, I seek information on the endeavours leading to the establishment of the woollens mill in Castlemaine in 1875. My maternal grand uncle, Thomas MARTIN, is thought to have played some part, although he is not recorded as shareholder or listed in relevant Directories of the time. His son, James Mason Martin, who became a noted historian of Castlemaine's early days, wrote in 1947 in his book 'Major Mitchell and Castlemaine': "No other town of our size can boast such a financial backbone as is provided by our two principle industries - Thompson's Engineering Works and the Woollen Mill. These works provided employment for approximately 1200 citizens, and must be a tremendous help in the financial structure of the town. Production from both industries has gone practically all over the world, and to the Thompson brother, who founded the engineering works, and to my father and his colleagues, who founded the woollen mill almost 70 years ago (1875), we citizens owe an immense debt". Can any kind body shed any light on this issue, or on a boarding house named 'Granite Lodge' in Wimble Street in the 1890's or thereabouts. And may that which you seek be found Dean Newman, North Queensland Australia. "As time goes by" kenyon@znet.net.au "Old Deans never die - they just lose their faculties"

    1. [AUS-VIC-NorWest] Hotspur Avenue of Honour (WW1)
    2. Daryl Povey
    3. Reminder, Reminder, Reminder!!!! - Sat 23 June 2001 Hotspur's WW1 Avenue of Honour contains 40 trees dedicated to memory of local servicemen from WW1. The Avenue has been restored and there will be a plaque unveiling ceremony at: Hotspur, 2:00pm, Saturday 23rd June 2001. Hotspur is a small rural settlement in south-west Victoria between Heywood and Digby and located on the Crawford or Smoky River. The list of Soldiers along with family connections and the original planters of trees in 1918 can be found on the web at: http://www.ballaratgenealogy.org.au/hotspur/avenue.htm I would be keen to hear from anyone who may be connected with the families of these soldiers or who may have any information about them or their families. All visitors are most welcome to the plaque ceremony along with a gathering in the Hotspur Hall which will have historic photographs from the area by Vern McCallum and computerised family history from the Hotspur area by Daryl Povey. There will be representatives from the Hamilton History Centre and History House in Portland along with the RSL and many more .... There are visitors travelling from NSW with family connections to the early days at Hotspur. Some of the early Hotspur Pioneer families are listed on the www at: http://www.ballaratgenealogy.org.au/hotspur/ Are you connected ??? 3. Hi Michael, I have a Jane STANIFORD born about 1810 in West Molesey in Surrey, England to parents William and Sarah STANIFORD. I wonder if your Summerland STANIFORD could be some kind of relation. Jane STANIFORD married William GATFIELD anout 1830. Jane GATFIELD then had family - her husband died and she joined her son, William Staniford Gatfield in Brisbane, Qld, when she emigrated with other family members after 1857. Her son William Staniford GATFIELD arrived in Brisbane on "New Great Britain" on 6/01/1857. It would be interesting to find a connection. Regards Lyn Bateson Brisbane.
