Just came across this >one while searching for something else: >Genealogical and History Societies in Northern and Western Victoria: >http://www.ballaratgenealogy.org.au/society.htm >Any other great stuff we should know about Daryl? Hi Beryl & others I have set up the Ballarat Genealogy webpages at: http://www.ballaratgenealogy.org.au/ so that those who are fairly new to the internet and interested in genealogy could have a springboard for searching the web rather than using a hit-or-miss approach which seems to be fairly common. I use this page as my STARTUP page in my browser so am continually fiddling with it and adding new links such as Ian Marr's excellent Cemeteries Pages at: http://www.ansonic.com.au/marrtronics/CemIndex.html The main menu has pages on SEARCH ENGINES (for which I have provided a rating system), anti-virus software, book sellers, BDM's, shipping, genealogical & historical societies, convicts, maps, rootsweb, email lists, help wanted messages, and ...... much more..... Happy to add advice pages on topics which may be of use to others. I have to confess that I am a secondary teacher (physics but with an interest in history) and this provides me with world wide classroom and a lot of fun seeing others get excited when they locate something new. I am always happy to link to other websites which provide access to information for which others may be searching. If there is a perceived need for a page of advice on researching any topic on the web related to history or genealogy them I am happy to add it if the basic idea or outline of information is provided. PS update your anti-virus software weekly, I still receive on average 2 email viruses in attachments per day, so there are a lot oiut there on the web who do not know their computer is infected with an email worm or worse. Have fun, Daryl Povey (Ballarat, ex Casterton area)
Could SKS with access to the Victorian CDs please check for a marriage between Charles Roper and Emma Davis. Known children are David and Charles - Charles is believed to have been born in NZ in 1868, although I am not sure about David's birth place. I would be grateful if SKS could check for David's birth as well. There is a group of Ropers travelling with a David Roper aged 7 in 1863 but cannot determine if they are my family, and am in need some further information. Many thanks Beth New Zealand

Hi All Have you noticed that the State Library of Victoria has a new catalogue system up on the net? It appears to be more user friendly, particularly the Manuscripts section. I was surprised to find so much family tree material in the manuscripts when I did a bit of a search the other night. Well worth typing in a family name or two just to see what's there. And you can go into a detailed screen to see just what the document contains. http://catalogue.slv.vic.gov.au/webvoy.htm Beryl O'Gorman Greensborough Victoria Australia
