Greetings all, *The CLARE surname ... DNA tracing project * A project is now under way at Leicester University exploring the links between the many, widespread families of CLARE from the UK and abroad, and how they relate to each other. It uses DNA sampling, looking at the Y chromosome, and it's free for any males surnamed CLARE [and CLEER, CLEAR, CLEARE ...] Please see the full explanation at my Family History website ... http://www.maryceleste.co.uk/famhist/clare/clare-dna1.htm ... and contact me (initially) if you would like to take part, or want to know more. For the sampling, the Genetics Dept. sends a little thing like a toothbrush, a tiny bottle, and a stamped addressed envelope ... it's very straightforward, professional and confidential. This is a unique opportunity to find out if, and how, the family trees of apparently-unrelated CLARE researchers may fit together. Some firms offer individual DNA testing for 100 pounds or more, but this survey is an academic one, potentially surveying our whole surname-tribe, and it is entirely without charge. Please do visit http://www.maryceleste.co.uk/famhist/clare/clare-dna1.htm and get in touch to indicate preliminary interest. Feel free to pass this message on to anyone involved with CLARE family history. PETITION FROM THE PARENTS OF BALOCHILE RD SS NO 3789 (Konongwootong South) Konongwootong South is 6 miles from Coleraine and was divided up for Closer Settlement in 1911. In 1915 Miss Elizabeth Hanlon was transferred from this school. Her sister Mary had lived with her in the teacher's residence and helped out in the school. There was also a third sister Annie who sometimes stayed with her too. The parents of Konong Sth obviously had a great affection for Mary and petitioned the Department to allow her to take over from her sister in the new year. They say of her: "Her learning and ability and tact with the children has specially come under our notice with the result that the children have responded with respect and attention to her teaching and have learned well, also the children love her and she loves them." High praise indeed! Unfortunately the Department replied that it had no power to appoint Miss Mary Hanlon. "The Public Service Act prescribes that the senior qualified applicant shall be appointed." DEATH OF A PIONEER Coleraine Albion 4th November 1910, Page 3 a The death took place at Portland on Sunday of Mrs John Blay (mother of Mr T Blay of Coleraine), in her 94th year. She was a colonist since 1838. Mrs Blay was born at Government House, Hobart Town, on January 8 1817, her mother being nurse to Mrs Sorell, wife of Colonel Sorell, Governor of Van Diemen's Land. On leaving school Mrs Blay entered the service as lady's maid of Lady Franklin, wife of Sir John Franklin, and remained there till her marriage at New Norfolk at the age of 17 years to John Blay, son of a prosperous farmer in the New Norfolk district. Hearing reports of the new settlement at Melbourne, they decided to go there, and arrived in 1838. They landed in the surf near where is now Port Melbourne. With her baby in her arms, Mrs Blay was carried ashore by a sailor. Melbourne only comprised a few huts and tents. Mrs Blay often related that the golden wattle was in full bloom everywhere, and that grass was abundant and fully 2 ft high. She knew "Johnny" Fawkner well. Mrs Blay was present at the first land sale in 1840, and saw during the sale bakers' carts drive up laden with loaves of bread, which were tilted out on the street for the public, as also were cases of biscuits. There was also an unlimited supply of intoxicants. During the sale a disturbance arose, and the ! Riot Act was read, but before its conclusion everyone except the officials had disappeared as if by magic. Mr and Mrs Blay, with an increased family of fice, in 1843, left for Geelong, where they stayed for nearly two years, and then went to Portland by bullock team, the journey occupying five weeks, Mrs Blay, with an infant two weeks' old, sitting on top of the draay. They arrived in Portland in April, 1845. Mrs Blay resided there continuously till her death on Sunday morning, a period of 65 years. Mrs Blay had a family of 14, 11 of whom survive her, the youngest being over 50 years of age. There are also a very large number of grand and great-grand children. Mrs Blay for many years had the distinction of being the oldest living Australian native. Beryl O'Gorman Greensborough Victoria Australia List Admin

>From the Coleraine Albion, as referenced below. Putting this up in 2 instalments as it's so long. Daryl will be adding this to his South-west website. OUR GIFT IN MEN Coleraine's District Offering Coleraine Albion 17th July 1916, p3, a, b and c For the purpose of presenting as complete a roll as possible of the brave patriots who have volunteered for active service from this district, we give below a list of their names. It will be understood that in some cases there may be reasonable doubt as to whether a person named is a district identity or not. Men there were in only temporary residence who offered their services from this quarter, whilst others essentially belonging to this district enlisted in places more or less distant because they happened to be there at the time. Both classes are included I the subjoined list. It is not to be taken for granted that this array of names is complete. Were all enlisters passed through a local register it would be a simple matter to obtain a copy of their names, but some toot to active service throughy other localities, hence it will not be surprising if a few names are unknowingly omitted. Should such be the case we shall be gladly willing to mention them in a succeeding issue. Apparently we are near the end of voluntary enlistment. If more men are to be raised they will be available through conscription, and in that case they cannot be classed with the brave "boys" whose names are appended in what will be an imperishable honor list. Hi All, Have just ordered micro film copies of W. W. Mail from, JUNE 1,1906 - JAN.17, 1919 on interlibrary loan from the National Library. Expect them a week from now. I will do look ups IF, you can provide NAMES, EXACT DATE, place and EVENT. Not every event would have been reported on, so good luck. Will also post extracts on mail list like last time. When I have finished with those dates, I will order the rest 1919 -1941 and after that, the earlier dates 1887-1906. That should keep me busy. Kind Regards To All, Daryl Crabtree Gladstone Qld.
G'day Wilma, I live in Naracoorte, on the South Australian side of the border, near Apsley. Beneyo and Neuarpur were little towns. Looking at an 'ordinary' road map of Victoria, if you find Edenhope and then look up towards the Little Desert National Park you will find ,on the S.A. side of the border, a town called Frances. My map reads 12kms from Frances in an almost straight line there is Neuarpurr and down from there, about 22ks is Benayeo. I cannot tell you much about these places, my husband installs TV antennas and goes to these places but I do not think they are "towns" as such. Benayeo is 8 kms from Apsley so maybe they were married in Apsley. I know people in Apsley so I may be able to find out more. Did they have any children in S.A.? I have the S.A. CD's if you want a look up. Thomas MURPHY and Emma Amelia SMITH were married at Beneyo Apsley in 1854. I cannot find their marriage on the Pioneers Index. Their 4th child, Agens Hester Murphy was born at Neuarpur, Apsley in 1863. I have a copy of the birth registration and could not find Neuarpur on the map. Look forward to your response Regards, Wilma Melbourne Vic. Aust.
