    1. [AUS-VIC-NorWest] Bookshop & WEHL
    2. Jennifer's email
    3. Hello everyone, I am new to this list and thought some of you may wish to know of a great 2nd hand bookshop in Echuca. I bought a book from there last week which I had been wanting on St. Arnaud. David Engstrom has a shop full of books including Australiana and locality books covering all areas. If he doesn't have what you want he will make every effort to get it for you..... Read Heeler Bookshop, 580 High Street, Echuca. Phone/Fax 03 54801600 ( 7 days a week) Now I will list my interest. My g.grandparents settled in St. Arnaud after arriving from Germany in 1880. They were Gustav and Helene WEHL. My grandfather Otto Carl Wehl was born in St. Arnaud in 1887. I remember him telling me that he went to a small private school. Is anyone able to help me with any info. Many thanks, Jennifer Leddra

    3. Friday September 6,1918 AVENUE OF HONOUR TREE PLANTING AT BOOROOPKI Although in the morning the weather was inclement, the afternoon of Wednesday, 28th August, the appointed day for Booroopki and district's worthy recognition of the incalculable and valorous services of her soldier sons, saw much improved weather conditions and a large representative gathering. After the singing of the national anthem, proceedings were opened by Mr C.D.BLOCK, who, in the course of his address spoke of the worthy cause which had brought all together. It was some minute practical appreciation of the manly services of their soldiers, in as much as, years after the war when the fickle human mind would fast let these services sink into oblivion, in Booroopki towering evergreens would stand aloft in their dignity, forcibly recalling to the aged and strikingly teaching the young the spirit of the times in which they were planted. The Hon. Secretaries, Messrs A. F. CARRACHER and M. F. MORRIS, than read apologies from Messrs A. S. ROGERS M.H.R., W. SLATER, M.L.A., H. G. HILL and J. A. BULL and Crs. A. W. STEPHENS and P. J. CARRACHER, followed by the procedure of the planting. Thanks to the industry and energy of all, and to the generosity of Mr. F. A. CRABTREE, who donated the timber, the tree guards were all erected, and the plots were dug beforehand, through the agency of several working bees. The planting of the trees to the memory of the deceased soldiers, viz., Ptes J. R. GARDNER, C. F. PATCHING and P. BRENNAN, took pride of place. They were planted by Mrs Geo GARDNER, Miss R. A. CARRACHER (on behalf of Mrs P. J. LAVERY) and Mr W. JONES respectively. After this planting Mr C. D. BLOCK, in a few well chosen words, paid tribute to the deceased. During the afternoon, lunch, which was provided in their usual excellent way, by the ladies of the District, was partaken at the residence of Mrs C. WONG, who kindly provided all necessary crockery. Delicacies to suit the taste of the most fastidious were provided, while the attentiveness of the waitresses was the embodiment of efficiency. Proceedings were terminated with speeches by Messrs. C. D. BLOCK and B. LAVERY. The latter, speaking as an outsider, complimented Booroopki and district on having taken the initiative, among the many townships in the wide spreading limits of the prosperous Kowree Shire, in perpetuating the memory of those boys who have sacrificed all to do battle for the liberty and freedom which we all cherish. The National Anthem and God Bless Our Splendid Men were then sung, followed by three ringing cheers for the boys at the front, after which an adjournment was made for tea, which was again in the capable hands of the ladies. After tea all proceeded to Mr D. CARRACHER'S storeroom in which the ever welcome dance was held. The "light fantastic toe" and "jest and youthful jollity" continued well into the early hours of the morning. The ladies, leaving no stone unturned, capped their unequalled generosity by providing the dancers with refreshments, inconsiderate of the fatigue which their arduous day must necessarily have incurred. During the evening Messrs. B. LAVERY, and W. ABERLEY favoured the assembly with fine exhibitions of step-dancing. The M.C., Mr Jack CARRACHER jnr, was at his best, while excellent music was provided by Messrs. F. HINCH, Leo BULL, and W. ABERLEY. Thus concluded a happy day for Booroopki and district, with the residents feeling an inward satisfaction that within one little corner of the vast area of appreciation applicable to our soldiers, there had been sown a kindly remembrance, a honourable tribute and a glowing pride, coupled with a keen recognition of Lawson's lines, wherein "The better part of the people's life is when the storm comes upper most". Planting was proceeded with alphabetically, thirty five trees being planted in all. The following is the personnel of the planting:- Soldiers Name Tree Planted By Pte J. 3. Hi Everyone, Posting my Victorian research interests for the New Year:- SILVESTER/SYLVESTER BREMNER L'HOTTELIER TURNER LIMON ALLAN WADDELL HORE YOULTON WEYMOUTH SEYMOUR JENKINS(ON) STANLEY SMITH My greatest victory for 2001 was starting on my family history. I have found out so much in such a short period of time thanks to the help of some great people out there who generously gave of their time and experience which I deeply appreciate, and to some wonderful resources on the net that have made some things more attainable for people like myself who have little chance to get to the major libraries and archives. For 2002? Well, I have a good start, now its time to get down to the "nitty gritty"! Something that has me stumped? Tracing my GGrandfather Frederick Henry SILVESTER (b. Birmingham 1850). If anyone out there comes across him please let me know, I will be eternally grateful! Wishing you all a happy and prosperous New Year, Beverley, NSW

    3. Friday June 5,1908 Mr. Jas. WILLIAMS formally of Wyn Wyn, but now residing at Geelong, contemplates a trip to England. Mrs WILLIAMS is not likely to go. Mr. P. WILLIAMS will go to England shortly. Mrs Bridget RUDD, a Wimmera resident of over 50 years, died last Sunday. Deceased was caretaker for over 30 years at Horsham Lands Office. Four children are Mrs POTTER, Mrs FRANCE, Mrs MATHEWS, and Mr. E. RUDD. Mr. W. J. MAGILL has 250 acres under crop on his property near Bogan Gate. It is so well forward that he has turned his stock on it. He and family received a pleasant surprise lately by the visit of Messrs WILLIAMS and KOENIG, who have been inspecting land in New South Wales. At Messrs HAGELTHORN and BOLTON'S Natimuk stock sale yesterday week, there was a good yarding, particularly of sheep. Only one line of sheep was sold under the hammer, this being a draft of good merino weaners sent in by Mr. F. HAUSTORFER, which realised 8s. 3. Friday June 5, 1908 GYMBOWEN The newly established Blacksmithing business is apparently thriving, as Mr. WATSON intends having two fires going ere long. An up-to-date device for tyre shrinking and welding is an acquisition to the shop. Match shooting on the local rifle range has been wound up for a term with a competition for a ladies' bracelet, which took place a few weeks back. I duly reported it, but the report not having appeared must have strayed. The match was fired at 400 and 500 yards, 7 shots, and great interest attached to the event. A large gathering of ladies was present. The bracelet was won by Mr. A. MUEGEL for Miss Lizzie CRUSE with the exceptionally good score of 68 points off the rifle out of a possible 70. Mr F. MUEGEL secured second prize, for Miss BUFFHAM, Mr. J. BYRNE third, for Mrs Robt. SIVEWRIGHT, and Mr. D. BYRNE fourth, for Mrs G. T. HAASE. At the conclusion of the match the captain, Mr. F. MUEGEL, in an appropriate speech, presented the trophies, also the gold medal which was won in a previous competition by Mr. L. CRUSE, who neatly responded to the captain's remarks. 3. Friday February 2,1906 The many friends of Mr Abel BULLOCK in the Goroke district will be pleased to know that he has been appointed to the important position of manager of the drapery Dept. in the well known store of Oliver L. BEDFORD and Compy. Mr BULLOCK, who has held a similar position for Messrs RATCLIFFE & Son, has been associated with the West Wimmera for over a third of a century, and has a thorough grasp of his business. Mr HODGKINSON, of the Colonial Bank Natimuk, has had to cease duty owing to illness. Miss E. FISHER, of Bridgewater, has been appointed to Natimuk Post Office. Messrs LEARMONTH Bros. report a poor yarding at RATCLIFFE'S yards yesterday, little business being done. The Quantong people are having some trouble amongst themselves over the distribution of water, and matters have gone so far between two parties that litigation is threatened. 3. Friday February 2,1906 CARCHAP (From our own correspondent) Harvest operations are about over, and wheat carting is now the order. In some of the paddocks very good yields have been obtained. Some of the crops at Mt. Talbot have turned out very well. Messrs. CAMPBELL Bros. having obtained over 5 bags per acre on new ground. The average for the district will be about three bags. A fire started on the property of Mr John MARSHALL, Telangatuk West, last Monday week. It was partly beaten out, but broke out afresh on Tuesday, and travelled with great rapidity over the Mt. Talbot estate, and, in spite of the efforts of a number of willing fire fighters reached the paddock rented by Mr J. SCOTT, of Clear Lake, and in which all his wheat just harvested, was standing in heaps, in different parts of the paddock. Mr SCOTT had just arrived home with his machines, when word reached him that the fire was close to the stubbles. Mr SCOTT and Mr. COCKROFT who was with him, started at once in hot haste to the scene of the fire across country, and being on good horses rode the distance of ten miles in half an hour and considering they had such a number of fences to negotiate, I think they must have put up a record. As soon as Mr SCOTT arrived, he gave orders to burn around the heap instantly. The order was carried out, and so the wheat was saved, some 500 bags, and in less time than it takes to write particulars, the whole paddock of 230 acres was swept by the flames. All Mr SCOTT lost was 5 bags, and I'm sure all his friends will join in heartiest congratulations on his good fortune. 3. Friday February 2,1906 LAND SALE Mr UBERGANG, of Warrnambool, was the purchaser of Mr H. SCHMIDT'S farm yesterday. There was a large attendance at NEWTON'S Hotel, including would be buyers from New South Wales and South Australia. Mr J. SUDHOLZ started the bidding at £6. and after very brisk bidding Mr. Thos. YOUNG knocked it down to Mr. UBERGANG at £8/16/., Mr August GLADIGAN going to £8/15/. This is a record price for local land. An hour later at the same hotel, Messrs HAGELTHORN and BOLTON disposed of the farm of Mr Jas. WOODHART jr. at Tooan East. This was secured by Mr T. DWYER, who has property in the vicinity, at £4/2/. per acre, which was regarded as a highly satisfactory figure. 3. Friday February 2,1906 DEATH Mr and Mrs KING, of Tooan, were unfortunate enough to loose their only child, a daughter of 7 weeks. Mrs KING was staying at Mrs BLACKSON'S, in Natimuk, so that the child might have medical attention, when it died suddenly on Friday morning, just after Mrs KING had left town. This child was one of five living generations in the family of Mrs HOGAN, of Tooan. Mrs HOGAN is 90 years old, and is still active. Mrs Julia JOHNSON, has a daughter, Mrs C. TAYLOR, who is the mother of Mrs KING, and grandmother of the deceased infant. Mrs HOGAN is still a great great grandmother, as her granddaughter, Mrs SCOTT, has two children. This is a rare record. 1. [AUS-VIC-NorWest] Holmes Waterhole - Rocklands
    2. Beryl OGorman
    3. Before the building of the ROCKLANDS DAM near Balmoral there was a spot on the Glenelg called HOLMES WATERHOLE or WATERHOLES. I believe this to mark the spot where the HOLMES family lived when my G grandfather was a boundary rider for Alexander Turnbull on the Rocklands Estate. If there was anyone who had a map showing that spot or who knows where that spot was you'll be my friend forever. Maybe you even have an elderly relative in that area that you could ask? 1. [AUS-VIC-NorWest] Some New Year traffic
    2. Beryl OGorman
    3. OK Folks If you're on holidays and the amount of email traffic is light, why not remind us of one or all of the following - 1. Names you're researching. 2. Biggest search victory for 2001. 3, Biggest challenge for 2002. 4. Something that's really got you stumped that someone else on the List might be able to help with. I'll be looking for all my HOLMES contacts this year, so am off to make a list of all the related surnames. Most of them stayed around the Western District and Wimmera so hopefully they'll be easy to find. Cheers Beryl O'Gorman Greensborough Victoria Australia List Admin
