    1. [AUS-VIC-NorWest] Hotspur, Vic WW1 Avenue of Honour
    2. Daryl Povey
    3. Hotspur is a small rural settlement in south-west Victoria between Heywood and Digby and located on the Crawford or Smoky River. Like many settlements it has a WW1 Avenue of Honour. Hotspur's Avenue contains 40 trees dedicated to memory of local servicemen from WW1. The Avenue has been restored and there will be a plaque unveiling ceremony at Hotspur, 2:00pm, Saturday 23rd June 2001. The list of Soldiers along with family connections and the original planters of trees in 1918 can be found on the web at: http://www.ballaratgenealogy.org.au/hotspur/avenue.htm I would be keen to hear from anyone who may be connected with the families of these soldiers or who may have any information about them or their families. All visitors are most welcome. Daryl Povey ================================================== Daryl K. 1. [AUS-VIC-NorWest] One of my mob
    2. Beryl O'Gorman
    3. Hepzibah McPhee nee Bateson b1849 dFeb 1934 Hepzibah was born in England. In 1853 she arrived in Portland Bay on the Duke of Richmond. In 1854 she lived on Yarrock Station in the Wimmera. She ate the meat of the opossum and kangaroo with the native children, and her father made her boots of sheepskin. She remembered seeing the overland gold escort, the Chinese invasion, and Morgan the bushranger. Her father constructed a wagon without using iron and a house without using nails. When 13, a bullock wagon from Portland Bay or Geelong arrived laden with goods, and she tasted sweets and fruit and wore leather boots for the first time. In 1867 she married a shepherd named McPhee. Her husband had emigrated from Scotland at age 7. Later he became a farmer. Mrs McPhee is buried at Kiata, near Nhill. Recommended by Fred K McKenzie - a friend (From 'Pioneer Women of Victoria' - RHSV. Her husband was Archibald McPhee, son of Alexander McPhee and Sarah Cameron who came from Lockyside near Fort William in the highlands of Scotland. She was the daughter of Josiah Bateson and Elizabeth Newman from Foxton in Cambridge.) Beryl O'Gorman Greensborough Victoria Australia List Admin
