I went looking around June 1859 to see whether the story I had extracted was reported in the Gazette. Yes At 1.15 am on the 24th instant the mail coach from Beechworth was stuck up on the road between Seymour and Broadmeadows about 4 miles from the latter place, by 3 armed men, two of whom were mounted and one on foot. Description of the offenders - etc etc. (if anyone wants this I shall type it up) One of the offenders was called "Bill" by his companions. Particulars respecting the property taken, as follows - 10 mail bags containing letters from the various intermediate townships from Beechworth. In one of the bags was a registered letter addressed to "Joe Johnson, Tattersalls Hotel, Melbourne" contained four £1 notes, viz 1st, on the Oriental bank, Melbourne dated 1/1/1858 #170960 2nd on same bank dated Sydney 1/1/1857 #90339 3rd on Bank of NSW Melbourne 1/1/1857 #28680 4th on same bank dated Geelong 1/1/1858 #47264 Two £5 notes were taken from Frank May the driver, a silver verge watch #4787 maker Brooksbank Bradford, a silk guard with beads attached, guard broken; one £5 2 £1 notes and some silver from James Dutton, passenger; a colonial gold ring, twisted in the shape of a knot, one buckle ring, colonial gold, 5 small rubies set in buckle, on of which is missing 5s in silver, and a pair of wellington boots, from James Goodsir, passenger. It goes on with other property stolen and then lists the letters stolen Two men names respectively Daniel Bergin, James Williams, and Patrick Maguire, have been arrested by the police at Reedy Creek on suspicion of having committed the offence 31/5/1859 The two men hereafter named and described left Reedy Creek on the morning of the 27th ultimo, en route to Sydney overland and had with them 3 horses...........describes horses. Paddy Farrell alias McCarthy describes him 2nd man known as Peter and his descripton. June 23rd 1859 - more on robbery Further particulars - Peter Hackett and dAniel Bergin have been commited for trial for robbing the beechworth mail.
