Hello Listers, I am new to this list. I have an interest in the Beechworth area. My two sets of gg grandparents - James and Mary Ann McNamara and James and Roseanna Nolan - settled there in the middle 1850's. The McNamara' lived at Madman's Gully, Spring Creek, Beechworth as stated on their death certificates. I hope someone can tell me where this was as I can't find Madman's Gully on any of my maps. Thanks. Sheila. Researching McNamara and Nolan with connections to Webb, Barrass and Quinlan all in Beechworth.
The Vicroads Country Street Directory has a Madmans Gully Road, Beechworth on map 325 Q 10 Terry ----- Original Message ----- From: "The McKennas" <gozebs@tpg.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-NE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 19, 2002 10:36 AM Subject: [AVNE] Madman's Gully, Beechworth > Hello Listers, > I am new to this list. Sheila - I have a map with Mad Mans Gully on it. Happy to scan to you if you wish. It is just behind Lake Sambell between the road to Stanley an the Buckland Gap Road. Obviously near the Asylum. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to think Madman'sGully is actually crossed by the road out of Beechworth to Buckland Gap, and is indicated by a sign. I'm guessing, but about 3 or 4 kms out? Steep hillsides, thick bush, lots of obvious old diggings (as you'd expect). I'm going by my "memory", so feel free to throw things at me if I'm wrong. (Abuse will be returned!). Going by my trusty gold mining map - its just on the other side of the railway station so to speak - not ks out. Throwing nuggets here zip. Where Camp Street (which becomes Albert?) crosses over Spring Creek cum RAilway Station head straight out Road to left takes you to STanley. DOn't go down there, keep going up. This road "ends" and a road to the left and a road to the right. Both these left and right roads join up the top. In middle is Madman Bully running down to the STanley Road. Are you lost yet? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Ross" <rossof@ozemail.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-NE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 19, 2002 2:32 PM Subject: Re: [AVNE] Madman's Gully, Beechworth > Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to think Madman'sGully is actually > crossed by the road out of Beechworth to Buckland Gap, and is indicated by a > sign. > > I'm guessing, but about 3 or 4 kms out? All, > I hope someone can tell me where this was as I can't find > Madman's Gully on any of my maps. If you go to http://www.land.vic.gov.au/map/index.html and then search for Dingle Road, Beechworth, you will see Madman Gully in the centre of the map, heading up towards Lake Sambell.
