While reading the book, "Beechworth, a Titan's Field", I discovered that the original Beechworth Cemetery was at the corner of Camp and Loch Streets. In 1857, the bodies were disinterred and taken in procession to the present cemetery site. My great great uncle, John Nolan died in 1854 and according to his death certificate was buried in the Beechworth cemetery. I now assume this means the original one. Was there a list published of the names of the bodies moved? Was it in the newspaper or do the present Cemetery Trust have one? I have a list from the present cemetery giving all the Nolans buried in the cemetery with plot numbers but John's name does not appear. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Sheila.
Sheila - I don't know about lists, but a lot of B/worth cemetery records were lost early 1860's in a fire. There is a rather large plot in B/worth Cemetery which holds the remains of those "transferred". No names given. He came to Aus. but I think he must have swum as I cannot find any entry details for him. David had been a storekeeper according to his marriage cert. but moved around between Bindi where he had land, Omeo, mined for gold at Cassilis, and finished as a grazier at Dargo. I have for some time suspected that he had an uncle, John, and am wondering if you have any connection to this David. If you want any more information re David in Oz, I will be very pleased to hear from you. Regards Irene Rees - Gold Coast ex Gippsland, Australia.
