Description of 4 of the offenders: - 1st A man about 5'10" high, 30 years of age, long face, (would be if he got caught) dark hair, small whiskers, and sallow complexion, wore a waterproof coat and black jim crow hat; 2nd 5'6" high stout made, light complexion, Roman nose, broad cheek bones and small light whiskers, dark shooting coat and dark jim crow hat 3rd. About 20 years of age, stout built, round face, red hair, no beard or whiskers; 4th 5'8" high, about 35 years of age, very stout, dark complexion, hair and whiskers, hoarse voice and speaks like a Yorkshireman. The 5th cannot be described.     3. Hi Denise, Yes that was the James Osborne who settled here in 1840, owning most of the country between Bruarong and Allans Flat, about 17,920 acres. His homestead was "Tilingalong"... nothing remains now but a grove of trees. Osborne died in 1868 and is buried in Yackandandah Cemetery, his headstone has a nice portrait in bronze. Does anyone know what was a "jim crow hat"? Not that I want one, I'd just like to know.     3. Jim Crow hat is mentined much in the Gazettes are as some other sort of hat I've typed up - wideawake. I wonder if Jim Crow has anythig to do with the miing area of same name near Daylesford or that way somewhere.
