Hi Kaye, I'm grateful to have a copy of this obituary. It was a disastrous time for Hugh's mother who had been widowed twelve months earlier. Three of her sons were killed at the war and the eldest son, who stayed home to run the farm, died of tetanus poisoning. The district farmers brought their teams of horses to the family property at Bobinawarrah for a 'patriotic ploughing day' on May 1, 1918. Many thanks Bonnie Joy (nee Ferguson). PTE H V FERGUSON. Several weeks ago the relatives of Pte Hugh Valentine FERGUSON, of Bobinawarrah, received information that he was reported missing. On Wednesday last the Defence Department forwarded a telegram notifying that Pte FERGUSON was now officially reported as having been killed in action on 29th November at Lone Pine. A bursting shrapnel shell was the cause of his death. The telegram came through to the Rev F CHISHOLM, who conveyed the sad news to the family. Pte H V FERGUSON was the third son of Mrs and the late Mr Hugh FERGUSON, of "Gracevale," Bobinawarrah, and was 24? years of age. He enlisted early in 1915, and had been in the trenches on Gallipoli for several months before meeting his fate. He was a fine stamp of a soldier. He was engaged in farming at Holbrook NSW, when he enlisted, and he and his brother, Pte Geo FERGUSON, left for the front together, his brother having since been invalided to England sick, and is now in Scotland. Pte FERGUSON was a prominent playing member of the Milawa football club, and his amiable and sociable disposition made him extremely popular. Deep regret will be felt at his death - but he has won a hero's reward - and sincere sympathy will be extended to the mother and family in their loss. Deceased brothers and sisters are - Messrs Jack, and Andrew, of Bobinawarrah; Norman and Thomas, of Holbrook, Pt Geo FERGUSON, on service, Misses Margaret and Grace FERGUSON, Bobinawarrah." ____________________________________ Also, from my files FERGUSON Hugh Valentine: Pte 1021 24 Bn Enlisted 17/03/15 KIA 29/11/15 Age 24 [Bobinawarrah] Father Hugh FERGUSON ; Mother Janet KERR ["Graceville" ] Killed Lone Pine.
