For my staff member Mary Dean. I have unearthed some very important information on her rellie......... Very informatvie - 22nd October 1929 Mayor Cr Mather took a peg along when he opened the pig yards at Wangaratta. Based on the design of the pig yards at Colac cost over £4000. They had concrete floors, and a roof. Built in Tone Road at Bacheldr's Green next to where the Tourist Centre stood. Won't get too many tourists when the pigs are in residence I am sure. Busy month for Cr Mather. A cycle race which was to put Wangaratta on the map got under way in 1929 on 19th October. Organised by Bruce Small the field included the famous Hubert Opperman. Cr. Mather got up early that day and sent the first bunch off just before 6 am. The winner was O. Nicholson, with Opperman 5 minutes behind. Time taken by Nicholson was 10 hours 33 minutes and 15 secs. Mayor Mather must have enjoyed himself at the races, any races, - for he did attend the one on 1st Feb 1930. Cr Mather made the presentation to Maroney a local runner who won the Gift off twelve yards in 12 seconds. Mather got carried away a tad and called for 3 cheers for the local runner. This was during a Wangaratta Carnival. This was the first time that a local had won the gift. Mather retired for the night, got worn out chasing the guy to give him his medal.
