    3. Mary, is this one your Foster? W.H. Foster Esq. P.M. was the judge at horse racing at the Boxing Day Sports. Handicappers were Zincke, McCurdy and Dennett. Trouble is I don't know the date. It is an ad in a paper I have which I bought at the Burke Museum. This seems to be a collection of pieces from newspapers which when printed comes up appearing to be one newspaper. If he is yours and you would like a copy, let me know. Denise

    3. Hello Denise, You are very kind to keep a look out for my FOSTER lot. Unfortunately this William Henry FOSTER is not my William Henry FOSTER. He is the "Boy Warden" after whom the town FOSTER is named (changed from Stockyard Creek.) He was a travelling judge/magistrate who certainly got around and created a lot of history. Whilst you are looking/and re posting my interest My William Henry FOSTER mined at Two Mile Creek and Three Mile Creek, obviously struck gold and set up a butcher's shop (his trade in Coventry) in Madman's Gully. He then became licensee of The Prince of Wales Hotel , Beechworth, which is now a car park, and then owned The Temple Bar Hotel, Beechworth which was located where the Salvation Army Hall is now. The Temple Bar was willed to his second wife Anne/a Maria FOSTER nee MAST nee JONES, who then married John Godfred COGDELL. First wife Caroline FOSTER nee PRITCHARD disappeared some time in between 1851 and 1869 either in England or Australia. Anne/a Maria and John Godfred COGDELL sold the hotel and he died in Brunswick in 1894 and she disappeared as well. Interestingly there is no record of the death of her first husband William MAST. There was obviously some family tension/problems as William Henry FOSTER left everything to his second wife and a shilling to his sons Henry FOSTER MLA (later the first member for Gippsland East) and Thomas FOSTER of Omeo. He also bequeathed a shilling to his daughter Ellen whom he named as Helen in the will, and another shilling to Caroline FOSTER who he stated had died in 1856 on his second marriage certificate. No evidence has been found of Ellen FOSTER in Australia. This problem of Caroline and Ellen has led me up many paths of investigation, purchase of certificates, looking at burials etc. both here and in England - if anyone has any ideas of where to look or a new slant on how to look at the problem I would love to hear from you.
