There is a Cairn near Everton. It marks the spot where Hume and HOvell crossed the road to Bright!!! They descended from the hills and reached the stream they named the Ovens. They are thought to have passed the future site of Beechworth in the vicinity of Baarmutha and down they went into the valley between Everton and Murumngee, arriving at the OVens just downstream of the present day Whorouly. Hovell said "it as pretty a spot and as valuable as any I have seen since leaving home.... I have named it the Ovens in compliment to Major Ovens". Test............Who is M Ovens? The cairn is right outside the boundary of Brookfield - Hiram Crawford's property at Everton. So I was tickled to find this description and I am putting a comment in the story but would like to know from someone on the list with good history sense who Ovens was. Thanks Denise
